[edit] This Old VCR

Strong Bad's exchange with Bubs is a takeoff of television home remodeling shows such as This Old House, where the host asks various team members what they are doing, why, and how.

4 branches

[edit] Legalize STUFF

VERDICT: This item was accepted, 19–8. The votes and arguments have been moved to HRWiki:STUFF/Archive/4 branches.

[edit] Seeing red

It is unlikely that The Homestar Runner would regard it as insulting to call the alien a Communist, as the perceived 1930's setting of the cartoon makes it incongruous with the general American resentment of Communism which began in the Cold War after World War II.

50 emails

[edit] What Is That Stupid Reference?

When Strong Bad talks about the Great Leg and the Leg of Hope, he may be referring to the SNES RPG Secret of Mana. You can upgrade the Great Bow into the Bow of Hope. The leg of hope is also a lyric in the song Add It Up by the Violent Femmes.

A Holiday Greeting

[edit] Thank God for STUFF

Excluding the "Working For the Weak-End?" entry in Strong Sad's Lament, this is the only time God is ever mentioned on the site, although Strong Sad is simply quoting Dickens.

Biz Cas Fri 3

[edit] 3 Gigabyte STUFF Attachment

It's likely that the 3GB attachment was the "Medi-a-lecrix Playa" and the video file, as most movies do not come in a .exe file, and a file of that length would have to be ridiculously lossless to warrant a 3GB file size.

[edit] Banana Manana?

Homestar is walking around talking into the banana as we are hearing the message for message 6. There are three equally implausible explanations for this:
  • He is mouthing the words to his already-recorded message into a banana.
  • Message 6 is actually a section of blank tape of equal length to Homestar's banana-message.
  • The banana really is a phone, and the viewer is hearing him record the message live.

[edit] Singing in Binary

Strong Bad's sequence of "10011011011001" may well have been inspired by the song "10001110101" by alternative rock band Clutch.

Food Court is probably also a reference to the kind of seemingly irrelevant places you find gangs of teenagers congregating while making use of their phones, Strong Bad often makes very accurate commentary on certain types of people like this, especially in the last email, secret identity. Food Courts are indoor plazas containing numerous different vendors of different foodstuffs, almost like an opened-out mall just for food.

Teen Girl Squad Issue 12

[edit] Edible Phone

Class Prez's phone model, "CRKR" (short for "Cracker"), is a play on four-letter Motorola cellular phone models such as the ROKR and the RAZR. The name itself is also a play on the recent naming of cell phones after foods like the LG Chocolate and the BlackBerry. This could also explain why Class Prez's phone has a bite taken out of it.

The Best Decemberween Ever

[edit] Earlier, Later? What?

Homestar's line, "I think if I get him the perfect present, he just might like me again", suggests that Strong Bad used to be friends with Homestar, or at least tolerated him. The email highschool might support this theory by showing them as members of a team of super-sleuths.

This could also possibly be a reference to the character Largo in the Megatokyo webcomic. In this webcomic, Largo "is an impulsive alcoholic who speaks L33t fluently and frequently." Thus, the mention of "Danoob" might be to what is known commonly online as a newbie.

The Reddest Radish

[edit] Facefaults

The way Homestar and Pom Pom fall over after Marzipan reveals the real reddest radish is similar to a popular sight gag from Japanese animation called a facefault. [edit] 504 Characters of Doom

David Bowie is a famous English rock artist whose career has spanned from the '60s to the present. Tin Machine was a four-piece rock band he formed from 1989 to 1992. Ziggy Stardust was an androgynous character David Bowie invented and performed as for his classic 1972 album, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Thy Dungeonman rejects the "Tin Machine era" when David Bowie dressed in suits with a mustache and beard and prefers the Ziggy Stardust persona, who wore wild, Japan-influenced outfits and the wild red hair which Strong Sad wears in Halloween Fairstival.

[edit] Non-existent fact?

The presence of a random, non-existent "item" in the last slot of your inventory may have been inspired by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text adventure (Infocom, 1984). Through most of that game, your inventory contains the enigmatic "no tea". Unlike Thy Dungeonman, however, no tea is eventually replaced by tea, a major milestone in the game.
