Week 24, 2012

In flag day, the 32nd Strong Bad Email, released on June 17, 2002 (three days after Flag Day), Pablo from Phoenix wishes Strong Bad a happy Flag Day and asks him to share Strong Badia's flag. Strong Bad then goes to Strong Badia, where after hoisting Strong Badia's flag, he sings the Strong Badia National Anthem. During the anthem, a montage plays, consisting of Strong Badia, Strong Bad, a coin of Strong Bad, The Cheat playing the beat to the song on his keyboard, a coin of The Cheat, the Stop Sign, Cold Ones, Strong Mad who is getting a tattoo of Strong Badia's coat of arms from Strong Bad, the tire, and emphasis on the fact that the tire is Strong Badia's sole "population". This emphasis - "Population: Tire" - later became the title of a game. This is also the first Strong Bad email to be over two minutes in length (not counting 1 step ahead, whose alternate endings were added later). watch (more...)

The Bear Holding a Shark, also known as the Bear-Shark, is a wooden cut-out of a bear standing on its hind legs, holding a shark above its head. The cut-out lurks behind the fence of Strong Badia. The bear holding a shark is one of Strong Badia's "security counter-measures", as Strong Bad puts it; whenever The Cheat touches the Tire, he is given an electric shock and the bear holding a shark pops up. For reasons that are never really explained, The Cheat seems to have a strong phobia of bears holding sharks. The Bear-Shark also plays the part of "headhunters" on Strong Bad's Riverquest Safariventure. It is "scared off" by firing a starting pistol in its general direction twice. In the email myths & legends, it is featured in a documentary that traces back its mythical origins and shows how it evolved into the Bear Holding a Shark we know today. Homestar Runner claims to have seen the "monsterman" while walking in the woods, and he offers blurry photographic evidence to back his claim. (more...)

Week 22, 2012

Super NES is the first animated Homestar Runner cartoon and music video ever. It was made with Mario Paint. Mario Paint was a painting/music-making program for the Super NES and upon its initial release was packaged in a larger box with the Super NES Mouse, a two-button peripheral that perfectly emulated a real computer mouse. The song used in the toon was used again in Theme Song Video and its beat is used in the new version of The King of Town DVD, Bug in Mouth Disease, and an Easter egg in the Strong Bad Email isp. The page title of the toon, Super Homestario Bros., references the title of the original Super Mario Bros. video game. watch (more...)

Week 21, 2012

Sickly Sam is the Old-Timey version of Strong Sad and is apparently a destitute victim of the Great Depression. Visually, he bears little resemblance to his current self, save for a more stylised version of Strong Sad's "soft-serve flip", and his personality is even more down-trodden than that of his modern-day counterpart. While Strong Sad is Strong Bad's brother, Sickly Sam does not appear to have any relationship with Old-Timey Strong Bad. In That a Ghost, Old-Timey Strong Bad doesn't even seem to know who Sickly Sam is, misidentifying him as the ghost. (more...)

Week 20, 2012

The Character Cards page is a small Flash file which contains an old-style picture of each main character on the Homestar Runner website, except for The Poopsmith and Homsar, the former who wasn't a main character at the time, and the latter who did not even exist at the time. The page also shows Homeschool Winner and The Unguraits, two characters who were later rejected. They would later make cameo appearances in A Decemberween Mackerel. The Strong Sad card would be re-used in the Strong Bad Email virus. watch (more...)

Week 19, 2012

Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective is the fourth episode of the Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People game series. Over five years after its original promise in the Strong Bad Email stunt double, the third episode of the much-beloved and well-acted Dangeresque series is finally released to the world! Dangeresque will have to solve a number of mysteries - Where is his father, why has Cutesy Buttons been kidnapped, and just who is the nefarious Uzi Bazooka? Starring Strong Bad as Dangeresque, Homestar Runner as Dangeresque Too and Uzi Bazooka, Coach Z as Renaldo, Marzipan as Cutesy Buttons and Sultry Buttons, among several others. (more...)

Fhqwhgads, the shortened version of "fhqwhgadshgnsdhjsdbkhsdabkfabkveybvf", was the signature in the Strong Bad Email "i love you". However, this was probably just random typing; many letters in this name are next to each other on a typical English-language QWERTY keyboard. In attempting to reply, Strong Bad shortened the unwieldy name to "fhqwhgads". Later, Strong Bad wrote a song about Fhqwhgads which The Cheat converted into a music video, entitled "Everybody to the Limit", and has apparently sold over 500,000 copies, as evidenced by the gold record seen in your friends. The song is later featured in the game Dancin' Bubs. In "Everybody to the Limit", Fhqwhgads is characterized as the Atari Dragon. Strong Bad gets annoyed at it for "jocking" him, that is, following him and trying to be like him. In the video, Fhqwhgads must be an unpopular, lowlife creature that looks up to Strong Bad as a role model, and, as such, he looks down upon Fhqwhgads. (more...)

Week 17, 2012

The Umpire is the official for Homestar's baseball team. His first appearance was in Where My Hat Is At?, where he tells "the" Homestar Runner that, without his hat, he is not allowed to play in the Big Game. After Homestar finds his hat, the Umpire yells, "SAFE!" as Homestar runs across home plate. This was his only appearance for many years, until the release of Kick-A-Ball. In this cartoon, he is animated and given a voice for the first time, sounding like Dick Vitale. He acts as the umpire for the kickball game, yelling "Yer ooooout!" to everyone who is out. However, in the DVD version of Where My Hat Is At?, he sounds more like a deep-voiced Strong Bad. The Umpire appeared again in the toon remake of Where My Hat Is At?. (more...)

Cool Tapes is a band formed by Marzipan in the toon Cool Things. It takes its name and logo from some graffiti Homestar Runner wrote on Marzipan's wall. When Homestar went to go fetch some paint to cover it up, Marzipan tells Homestar he "took too long" to get the paint, and she, The Cheat, and Strong Mad formed a band with the name "Cool Tapes". Its members consist of Marzipan on guitar/vocals, Strong Mad on bass, and The Cheat on drums. Currently, they have seven known songs, but only four titles have been verified. The band's name is mentioned in almost all of their songs. The band went on tour through many bead shops and topiary gardens during June 2006 (according to Weclome Back), where Homsar sold "StEVEN INCHES" at their merchandise table for pi dollars. When the band competed in the Battle Royale of the Bands, they lost after Marzipan wrote a song about the "not very nice" things she suspected judges Limozeen of performing. (more...)

Week 15, 2012

Rotten Eggs was released on March 24, 2008, just after Easter, and as such, is an Easter-themed toon. Strong Bad and Strong Sad are watching a college basketball game in their basement when a bad smell comes from the couch. It turns out to be an Easter egg that was not found at an Easter egg hunt several years back. Strong Bad then tells Strong Sad to start running and proceeds to throw the egg at him. It hits the wall, and the rotten innards form a message that states that a Strong Bad Email will be released next week. This toon seems to be a throwback to the Strong Bad Email morning routine, in which Strong Bad states that he keeps several eggs under the couch. watch (more...)

Pan Pan, an anime-style Giant Panda, is the 20X6 version of Pom Pom. Pan Pan seems to be a takeoff on the obligatory anime animal mascot, though in Under Construction he behaves more or less like Pom Pom. Like the other forms of Pom Pom, he doesn't speak in English; he instead speaks in a strange boinging sound. Pan Pan falling on 1-Up appears to be a running gag. (more)...

The House of the Brothers Strong is where Strong Bad, Strong Mad, and Strong Sad all live together. The Cheat spends a lot of time here, and his computer is in the house, even though he sleeps and "lives" in The King of Town's Grill. Gavin and The Cheat seem to be the closest things to pets the brothers have in the house. The exterior of the building has only been seen in Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People (although in cheat talk it was shown that there is an old sycamore outside that makes the sound "Douglas" when it rubs against the window) because most of the events happen somewhere inside. SBCG4AP remodels the house so that it is more internally consistent. (more...)

Week 12, 2012

The PhoneTime XL8 is Marzipan's second answering machine. It first appeared in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 9.2. This new machine is functionally the same as the previous model, but rather than the faux wood case, this sports a nice, black finish. Strong Bad managed to leave a prank call on this machine from prison using a can and some string in Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon (much like The Homestar Runner later does in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 13.2). The Cheat stole the Phonetime XL8 for Strong Bad's garage sale. Strong Bad then tried to sell it back to Marzipan, who wasn't too happy about it. In Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 16.2, the Phonetime XL8 was replaced with an upgraded model, the Phonetime XL800. (more...)

Beginning in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 1.0, Strong Bad has repeatedly prank-called Marzipan and tried to deceive her by pretending to be (and referencing) various fake personae. Although many of his pranks involve impersonating known characters, these aliases represent unknown persons whose very names betray the deception — especially those with the telltale "-body" ending. In Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 10.2, Strong Bad tried to pass along his craft to Homestar Runner, with pathetic results. Homestar and Marzipan have also used a few ridiculous aliases of their own. Although the callers sometimes slip up and unintentionally reveal their true identities, in most cases they attempt to maintain the charade of the alias. (more)...

History according to Strong Bad is a running gag in which Strong Bad presents as historical fact elements that are either clearly false or that can't be verified. When retelling legends, Strong Bad often parodies actual historical storytelling techniques or attempts to make himself look good in the present and the past. Since this running gag is usually found in emails, history according to Strong Bad often centers around the history of Strong Badia, although at times other characters are involved in the stories or storytelling. The FeedBurner Page is an RSS feed started by The Brothers Chaps in August 2009. The feed is powered by Google's FeedBurner service. Users that have RSS readers can subscribe to the feed to receive news and updates regarding homestarrunner.com without having to check the site frequently. Some of the feed-exclusive news and updates include the announcement of the birth of a very, very little girl into the Chaps' family, some behind-the-scenes commentary, and costumes and a pumpkin that weren't shown during Fan Costumes '09 and Punkin Show. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 7

The Homsar Main Page was originally an Easter egg that could be accessed at the end of the Strong Bad Email interview; it then became its own page, which can be accessed by clicking the last digit of the copyright date on any other Main Page. Homsar says unusual things for each button: he does exaggerated pronounciations of "Toons" and "Games" (in the latter, the Heavy Lourde crushes him, just like in the Strong Bad Email in which he was created). He says "Kelsey Grammer" for Characters, "Thank you" for Downloads, and "Legitimate Business" for Store, in which Strong Sad finds Homsar's job to be a bad idea. For Email, Homsar does his signature scream while the field becomes distorted. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 6

Main Page 23 is a Main Page that is viewed from behind. Coach Z directs Homestar Runner's sayings, and a wood plank falls on Homestar's head. Strong Bad also appears twice, pointing out whichever side of his head is facing towards Homestar. The Cheat also makes an appearance, as does another Homestar Runner. Strong Sad also makes a piece of wood resembling his head float by, with a recording of him saying, "I'm the floating head of dooooom!". This Main Page uses a homepages file that is different from that of the other Main Pages; while the normal homepages file is updated every time a new Main Page is released or the first update of the new year comes, this Main Page's homepages file has only been updated twice, first when Main Page 24 was released and again when Main Page 26 was released. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 5

Main Page 22 is a Main Page that appears to have been infected by the virus from the Strong Bad Email virus, which was also the cause of the demise of the Compy 386. The most obvious effects are the irregular rollover buttons and Homestar Runner having his Old-Timey counterpart's torso. Roll over the buttons for more bizarre effects, such as the Museum button falling down and crushing part of the Navbar; the No Loafing sign turning into code and a screen from Peasant's Quest appearing; Homestar speaking in a distorted voice while the shotgunned Compy 386 turns into the Tandy 400, the Tangerine Dreams, the Pom Pilot, and the Lappy 486; Homestar having his A Jumping Jack Contest head while several pop-ups appear accompanied by a robotic voice saying "Fhqwhgads"; Homestar having his head fly off; and an irregular-looking Strong Bad having a Duck Guardian One duck explode on his mouth. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 4

Main Page 17, a 20X6-themed Main Page, was released on January 9, 2003, just three days after the release of japanese cartoon, the Strong Bad Email that introduced 20X6. 1-Up, of course, takes Homestar Runner's place. A spaceship, Stinkoman, a 20X6 version of Marzipan, and Pan Pan all make appearances, with Stinkoman doing a spin-jump and saying "20X6!", 20X6 Marzipan saying the Japanese exclamation "Yatta!", and Pan Pan eating a bowl of rice. 1-Up also gets blue hair much like Stinkoman's. Last but not least, the screen sketches for Stinkoman to appear in the foreground and scream "Double Deuce!" while performing said attack. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 3

Main Page 11 has Homestar Runner hosting his own news broadcast. In this Main Page, the button effects include: the logo for the news popping up; the buildings in the background showing a star-shaped formation of lights, getting burned, and projecting the Homestar Runner logo much like Batman's Bat-Signal; headlines appearing that relate to Coach Z, Strong Bad, and melonade; and cutting to Strong Bad with the weather, where he remarks that "today's forecast is total crap". The subtitle for Coach Z's headline, "More than 2 Problems???", is a reference to his line from Who Said What Now?; also, he does indeed have more than two problems. It is also worth noting that Free Country, USA, or more accurately, Strong Badia, would later get its own news broadcast in the Strong Bad Email local news. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 2

Main Page 10 is an Old-Timey style Main Page. It is silent (apart from a looping grainy noise); instead of The Homestar Runner talking, a box appears with the appropriate rolled-over word (though The Homestar Runner does move his mouth). As far as effects go, a building in the background shoots out two bombs, the second of which The Homestar Runner swallows; Old-Timey Strong Bad makes an appearance; The Homestar Runner shoots a can from his mouth and also looks backwards, and an Old-Timey Strong Sad (most likely an early version of Sickly Sam) makes an appearance. This Main Page uses the "spinning" loading screen instead of the "jumping" one that most of the other Main Pages do; it has flatter buttons than the other Main Pages; and despite the greyscale, the updates button, the link to First Time Here?, and the icons for the other Main Pages are in colour. view (more...)

Week 8, 2012, Day 1

Main Page 3 is a Main Page that takes place on a beach, with Homestar Runner wearing a tourist's shirt. The button effects include: a boat coming by and sounding its horn, an appearance of a whale that resembles Moby-Dick, a monkey throwing two coconuts, first into the sea and then at Homestar, Homestar wearing shades, and a plane coming by towing a banner that reads "Wear a Bikini". In the Strong Bad Email island, the boat, whale, and plane appear as Homestar says his usual Main Page sayings (due to the island bearing a striking resemblence to the beach this Main Page takes place on), and "Wear a Bikini" also appears in two later Main Pages, is referenced in the Homestar Quiz, and is alluded to in looking old and Baddest of the Bands. view (more...)

Week 7, 2012

Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 6.0, released on January 22, 2002, is the sixth in a series of toons featuring the messages left by various citizens of Free Country, USA for Marzipan to hear. In this volume, Marzipan is in her dark room thinking, Strong Bad prank calls Marzipan as Dr. Professional saying she has serious problems and only has a few weeks to live, The King of Town wants to be cooler, Kevin calls, and Strong Bad and Homestar Runner want info on what to give their girlfriends for Valentine's Day; Strong Bad's "girlfriend" is imaginary and Homestar's girlfriend is, of course, Marzipan herself. watch (more...)

Week 6, 2012

Cheat Commandos is a short released on May 10, 2004 where a new toy series from Cheap As Free Toys debuts with a commercial. In the commercial, Strong Bad, Homestar Runner, and Coach Z are playing with the new Cheat Commandos toys. Afterwards, all of the Cheat Commandos toys are introduced (except Firebert, who was introduced in an earlier toon), along with various new vehicles and playsets. Finally, a preview from the Cheat Commandos Adventures cartoon is shown where Blue Laser is threatening to blow up the ocean and the Cheat Commandos have to stop them. Later on, Blue Laser tries a new objective to crush the Cheat Commandos. They fail miserably thanks to Firebert crushing them. view (more...)

Week 5, 2012

Superbowl Dealie is a Superbowl toon that was released during Super Bowl XXXVII. The toon takes place at the Basement of the Brothers Strong, where Strong Mad is watching TV, holding a football, yelling "Take it to the house" over and over again. Strong Bad comes in and tells Strong Mad that the game has been over for 6 hours, and Strong Mad throws the football at Strong Bad. Strong Bad ends up "taking the football to the house". Homestar Runner comes in wearing a Boston Bruins shirt and watches the TV with Strong Mad. This toon makes a reference to 20X6 (because of the page title). The Paper comes down saying "Due to the big game, the Strong Bad Email will be late this week.", and Homestar peeks out from it. watch (more...)

Week 4, 2012

In different town, the 99th Strong Bad Email, Steven from WV asks Strong Bad what he would do if he could make his town different. He explains in song form: the changes include The Poopsmith being able to talk, Marzipan changing her style of music and her hair, The Stick becoming a man-eating tree, The King of Town being "pea-buried alive", Bubs giving out unusual weapons, Strong Sad having been born with horns and a tail, Coach Z wearing a cool jacket, Homestar quitting sports, Pom Pom looking like an ABA basketball, and Homsar being a modestly hot girl. After the song, Strong Sad tries to offer Strong Bad a bust of Bubo, but since Strong Sad is dressed much like his brother imagined him, Strong Bad goes crazy, causing his brother to call him a "spaz" and a "weirdo". Strong Bad then concludes that his imagination is broken, and ends up "go[ing] place". watch (more...)

(Week 3, 2012)*

Stinkoman is Strong Bad's 20X6 counterpart. He is an amalgam of anime clichés, including blue hair, big eyes, a blocky sort of body and an obsession with challenging and fighting. He was introduced in the email japanese cartoon, but his name was first mentioned in island, where Homestar Runner called Strong Bad "Stinkoman". His birthday is on the sixth of January, one week before Trogdor's. He seems more than willing to eat dirt, since he has done so on one occasion. Stinkoman apparently has a cell phone, as he claims to when he invites Marzipan to a challenge in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 8.0. He has the ability to call his ship, the Stinkowing, when he whistles. Stinkoman also stars in the game Stinkoman 20X6, which The Brothers Chaps introduced in the NYU Talk and later released on the website. According to alternate universe, he is friends with Vector Strong Bad, who functions as his "training simulator". (More...)

(Week 2, 2012)*

Dragon, the 58th Strong Bad Email, was released on January 13, 2003. The e-mail began with Kaizer asking Strong Bad to draw a dragon, and after one failed attempt, Trogdor was born. The e-mail quickly became one of the most popular cartoons on homestarrunner.com. The heavy metal song at the end came to Matt by inspiration while he was cooking breakfast. At that time, Mike was finishing up the animation, but they decided to append the song to the end of the e-mail. (more...) watch

Week 1, 2012

20X6 vs. 1936 is a short released on March 17, 2003 where Stinkoman meets The Homestar Runner, who has somehow stumbled into the 20X6 era. After being insulted by Stinkoman, The Homestar Runner tells Stinkoman to "go soak [his] fat head". Stinkoman takes this as a challenge and goes on the attack only to be stopped by The Homestar Runner's pea shooter. The Homestar Runner starts dancing and Stinkoman gets into it wanting to dance too. This short reveals that the Old-Timey era takes place in the 1930s. watch (more...)
