Fan Costumes (abbreviated as Fan 'Stumes or Fanstumes) is a mostly-annual feature that showcases fan-submitted photographs of Homestar Runner-themed Halloween costumes and decorations. The slideshow is accompanied by sarcastic commentary from Strong Bad, who teases the fans — for their choice of characters to portray, quality and execution of costumes, or photography skills — or otherwise humorously remarks on qualities of the photos.

History
Fans dressed as the Homestar Runner characters had been acknowledged in Fan Stuff prior to Fan Costume Commentary, and would continue to occasionally be featured in the Weekly Fanstuff through 2008.
The first two entries did not include their respective years (2003 and 2005) in their titles, suggesting Fan Costumes may not have been initially planned to be an annual feature; the series became 'officially' annual with Fan Costumes '06, and every entry since has included the year in its title.
Costume photos originally would be sent in via email, typically to the brotherschaps@homestarrunner.com address excepting a special contest in 2009 that used a unique costumes@homestarrunner.com address. From 2015 through 2023, fanstume submissions were solicited through the @StrongBadActual Twitter account, reflecting the deprecation of the brotherschaps email.
Format
When Fan Costume Commentary first released, it used a distinctive format: each image was on a discrete page with a Flash file placed below it containing remarks on that image and "next" and "previous" buttons that allowing the viewer to navigate through the slideshow. It was adapted the next year to the site's typical wholly Flash-based format, framing the fan's photos in a simple white border, shown against a blue night-sky background, with a title at the top. The following year's More Fan Costumes further developed this format by reintroducing the "next" and "previous" buttons; these buttons would continue to be used through 2014.
Fan Costumes '06 introduced the modern presentation format: images shown on a projector screen in the basement of the Brothers Strong, with a slide transition between each costume. The series took a multi-year hiatus beginning in 2010 before resuming its annual pace in 2015 (with submissions of costumes from Halloweens in the intervening years welcomed).
In 2023, fanstumes were shared through the format of The Show, to match that year's Halloween toon. 2024's commentary also mirrored that year's toon: as only one character dressed up, only one fan was featured.
Though the original slideshow is the only one to specify "costume commentary" in its title, every entry has included comments from Strong Bad. The series has become more complex over the years, with Strong Bad's interaction with the onscreen images becoming more involved. Originally simply providing commentary, in later years the photos have been animated or drawn over to emphasize Strong Bad's riffing (which has become somewhat less deprecatory over time). As fans have portrayed increasingly specific characters and situations, Strong Bad has begun soliciting extremely specific costumes for dedicated fans to attempt in the next year.
