HRWiki talk:Userboxes

From Homestar Runner Wiki

Butt's twelve by pies! Note: You don't have to ask to put a userbox on the project page. Adding userboxes is discouraged at this point because of the length of the page, but if you think it's cool, go ahead and post it on the page, and if it gets deleted, it gets deleted. HOWEVER, make sure your userbox is fun and related to your personal Homestar Runner experience for the Fun userboxes, and is relevant for the other categories. POSTING SPECIFIC CITY USERBOXES IS NOT NECESSARY. Thank you for reading, and enjoy the page.

[edit] Wikipedia User boxes

So how are those of us who already had babel boxes on our pages, but as templates, supposed to use this? Are languages eventually going into this? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 00:36, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

I think the templates could either be converted to generic source code like the others or tweaked to fit if they don't already. — It's dot com 00:38, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Meant to type "tables", not "templates". — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:12, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Generic source code is good. Userboxes should be versatile, so if a user wants to change a bit of text, they can do so without creating a new template. Besides, saves a whole bunch of template creations. And that's my six cents. - Super Sam 05:28, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
I just have a WP:Babel box and a HRWiki:Babel box. works great! Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:29, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fun userboxes

I have a major concern with the fun userboxes. This is going to turn into the next user page crisis on this wiki. The Important notice at the top of the page says this: Please keep these boxes positive and related to your Homestar Runner experience (favorite toon, what you like to do on the wiki, etc.). Most of the fun boxes have nothing to do with one's H*R experience. If we let the fun userboxes continue, then decide they are getting out of hand, the opinions about what to do about them will be heavily divisive. This needs to be nipped in the bud, before it becomes a duplicate of Wikipedia's userbox crisis.

So what do we allow? We could say that if you want to make your own custom fun user boxes, fine, as long they don't go on the HRWiki:Userbox page. I would rather we discourage the use of fun userboxes completely, lest some users become distracted from the purpose of this wiki. Of course, this cannot be enforced. I would, nevertheless, be pleased to see the fun userboxes go. —BazookaJoe 23:47, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I think we can't go overboard on the restrictions either. I really like the fun userboxes cuz they're that fun and they ARE all HR-related. What's wrong with a few inside references? This wiki is work, yes, but all work and no fun ... well you know the rest. However, the issue is that the fun category is so open ended, anyone can add a gazillion user boxes. My proposal is this: should any category, or the entire userbox page, get out of hand we can lock the boxes we have, and then put in place a proposal and voting system of sorts: if new boxes will be added, then can be proposed in a different page (kinda like Featured articles) and commented on wether they should be added to this page or not. --Stux 00:05, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't think there's any problem if people just fix it up the way they like and stick with it. Unlike Guestbooks, there's nothing requiring or even encouraging people adding to them over and over and over and cluttering Recent Changes. Plus, I didn't care for the Guestbooks much; I like these. --Jay (Gobble) 00:09, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
I think the fun userboxes are fine, as long as they are Homstar related and positive. What we don't need are negative boxes or ones that would be divisive (basically, if the subject matter wouldn't be appropriate on a user page outside a userbox (political parties, etc.), then it shouldn't go inside one either). — It's dot com 00:13, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
I see your arguments and do agree with you; fun cannot be restricted. But, if we have users who spend way too much time making them, deleting them, changing them, can't decide-ing them every day... that's where our crisis comes in. I want to prevent that. —BazookaJoe 00:21, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
We've had people do that with their signatures, though, and no one dares ban those. --Jay (Gobble) 00:23, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
Though we are growing a little tired of can't-decide-itis with signatures, and are more readily telling people just to stick with one unchanged sig because it is associated with their identity. —BazookaJoe 01:40, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Can you ever make new user boxes?

well?

Nikolce Kocovski 03:03, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Of course. As long as they're
positive and related to your Homestar Runner experience (favorite toon, what you like to do on the wiki, etc.)

— User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:54, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I think, maybe a :this user is nice to other users. and maybe: this user likes all that is strong bad. and lastly: this user has seem so far every sb mail. what do you think? Nikolce Kocovski 06:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I really want a "This user's favorite character is Frank Benedetto" Userbox! That would be kool! =) (Whats a question? 21:47, 5 March 2007 (UTC))

How's about this?

[edit] Multiple Userboxes

If a user puts more than one Userbox section on their page, a validation error is created, as they share the title "HRWiki:Userbox". So perhaps we should note on the HRWIKI:Userbox page that all Userboxes must be in one section only? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:27, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I don't think it's really necessary to say anything on this page. For one, how many people have more than one? And for two, there are quite a few pages out there that are invalid for far worse reasons than this. — It's dot com 01:09, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] To the right

Do userboxes automaticly go to the right of a userpage or do you have to make them go there yourself? -Beep 14:48, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

They are just like regular images. While typing the image code, do a "|left|" or "|right|" to decide which way it goes. — Seriously (Talk) 14:50, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks -Beep 14:56, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Color Combinations

As we can all see, some color combinations make it very hard to read the text. JuicyStudio to the rescue! You can test your color combinations there to see if they are accessible or not. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:36, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Split Up

This page is now twice as long as the recommended length (it is 65 kb. long and pages are recommended to not be longer than 32). Is this a big enough problem to need to split this page up? Personally, I have a DSL modem, and this page has been having some upload problems for me when somebody has made a change to it. If we need to split it up, I recommend that we put all the store userboxes to a different page. So, what does everybody else think? -AtionSong 17:21, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I think they should all go on one page. That might not ultimately be practical, and so I realize they might have to be split up, but I think that should be delayed as long as possible. — It's dot com 22:56, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
If and when they must be split up, I support the plan of making the store ones seperate. They are easily the most distinct group. Point7Q 23:54, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Why should it be delayed? I think it's a great idea. We should split up every kind of userbox and put them into subpages. For example, the fun userboxes would be in Hrwiki: Userboxes/Fun. Wouldn't that be a good idea? — Seriously (Talk) 18:25, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
It should be delayed because currently it's still more convenient to scroll through one page than to try and navigate through split-up pages. — It's dot com 05:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Location Userboxes

It seems to me that the Location userboxes violate the "related to your Homestar Runner experience" requirement. At very least, I think that instead of linking to Wikipedia (e.g. This user lives in Texas), they should link to a 'toon that is related to that location (e.g. This user lives in Texas). This shouldn't be too hard, since most locations are covered by the senders of Strong Bad Emails. Anyone agree? Trey56 02:18, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

It has long been accepted to say where you are from (in normal text) on your user page. I therefore don't have any problem with a userbox to that effect. I'd like to find a way for us to find a generic way to list just one on this page, that way we don't have to list every variation here. — It's dot com 02:25, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
I see your point, and it's a good one. Trey56 02:33, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
There are also userboxes indicating one's age, and that in no way ties into Homestar Runner either. But I think those and these fall into the category of helping the wiki. People in different age groups and in different geographical locations will bring different experiences to the wiki, and so knowing this about a user helps us to work together. One could also argue that knowing whether a user wears long pants or has more than two problems isn't terribly meaningful to the work here at the wiki. I'd say that those are acceptable because they reference the work we're documenting, and the former are acceptable because they provide demographic info on the people with whom we work. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:26, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Yours is a good point too. Trey56 02:33, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Trey56: I see your point about linking them to a specific toon, but that seems kind of complex and in most cases a bit of a stretch. — It's dot com 02:28, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes, it is definitely more work; and as you said above, it would be nice to put one generic userbox on this page instead of 50+ different ones. Trey56 02:33, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
What about something like the following for a generic location userbox?
Sample Source
XX

It may seem a little boring, but It'll have to be pretty boring unless we want to upload 50+ flag images. Trey56 02:47, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Alternatively, we could link to the HRWiki Frappr map. Trey56 02:51, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Supplemental material

I'm only bringing this up, as it just started to happan and I don't want it to go spiraling down like guestbooks. People using nothing but userboxes as means of presenting infromation about themselves on their user pages.
Userboxes are a colorful, quick and easy way to present the simplest info about yourself. Where you are from, what you like to do, what part of the website you like most and so on. Although there is nothing wrong when using them, even long "towers" (as they are being called) of userboxes is alright, but I pesonaly think they should be supplemental material of the user page. What do I mean by that? That I think a user page should ofcoarse be composed of whatever info the user want to reveal about himself. Any other info that just doesn't fit on the textual side of tthe page could be moved to the color-coded, easly recognizable userboxes. For example, when I go to a user page and see an orange userbox, I know that this user like the character presented inside it the most, when I see a green userbox I know that the user own one of the T-shirts found in the store, etc. This is the one benefit of userboxes as I see it. It is somwhat a pet-peev of mine to see almost nothing but userboxes on a user page. I don't want to take drastic measures about it, but just bring it up for discussion to see what the community thinks. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 14:12, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I think that users have the right to choose whatever they want on their pages. Perhaps they do not want to spend too much time or reveal too much information about themselves and userboxes are a good alternative or maybe not. If users want to put userboxes on their page, how many, and what else is on the page is their choice. But I feel like the userboxes are not harmful even if tehy are the only thing on the page. -AtionSong 16:26, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm not saying that they break any user page guidlines or that it shouldn't be allowed, but every user can have his or hers own opinion, and that was mine. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 16:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Fun One?

I kinda like this one (which I put on my userpage):

ABC

So, how about it, Steve? Sqap 04:23, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

You don't have to ask to put it on there. You can just do it. --TheThin 11:54, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Age Userboxes

You know the age userboxes? Why don't we put in images signifying the different age groups instead of 'KID' 'TEEN' and 'OLD', for example Lil' Strong Bad for the 'KID' one, Teenage Strong Bad from Mysfit-steries for the 'TEEN' one and Balding Man for the 'OLD' one? I thought that I should put this up for discussion before doing it myself since the userboxes in question are very popular. --Jeppo 21:46, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Heh, I like that idea. Heimstern Läufer 00:46, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
I've used the idea on the Teen userbox on my user page. If you like it I'll use it on the userbox page. --Jeppo 14:30, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

I like it,but maybe Senor Cardgage would be better than Balding Man. Coach z's cool 04:17, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New Box

Just added this one:

Hope that's ok. If it is, anyone is free to reformat it. I had some difficulty with the size. If anyone's open to it, I think it would be cool to have one for each member of the band. I couldn't find any thumbnails for them all though, which is why I haven't already done it. - Point7Q 04:24, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I like it. By the way, here's the way the size works: the part in the code that says "43px" determines the width of the image. So, as you noticed, your userbox is a little taller than the others; if you want to shorten it, you also have to make it narrower. So, for example, in the following userbox I changed the image width to 32 pixels, and it made the height of the userbox about the same as the rest.
Best, Trey56 04:53, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Users With Userboxes

Why was "Category:Users With Userboxes" deleted? --Trogga 21:51, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Because we don't use user categories, and it serves no real purpose. If you really need to know who uses them, you can always use "What links here" on userbox. — It's dot com 22:26, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Actually, it would be better to use the "What links here" list on userboxtop because that would cover people with user ovals as well. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Why don't we use user categories? --Trogga 02:18, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] yahoo userbox

I just added this:

If you don't like it, feel free to delete it. I just thought since here was a google userbox that there should be a yahoo one too. I made yahoo a link to it's wikipedia page. If you want it to go somewhere else you can change that too. Anyway, I'd like some feedback.

Maybe we should replace the google userbox with a "This user found the wiki through a web search." userbox. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:11, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] created userbox

I just added this:

[edit] Guitar Hero Trogdor

I made this for my page, and was wondering where it should be put on here:

Sample Source

Jorb Is A Four Letters Word 01:30, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm sure a lot of GH players would love you to make that public. And also, you should probably do a userbox for Because it's Midnite as well. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:12, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sterrance Userbox

I dunno if it would be considered just clutter, but I made these, and whichever sounds the best for use is the one I would suggest, but the picture is a bit tall. I tried uploading one for here, but it didn't turn out so good. Is this good for the actual page?

Sample Source

Maybe this would be better height-wise:

Sample Source

As for putting it on the page, I'd go ahead. It's related to your H*R experience, isn't it? But if you are going to put it on the page, pick one and don't put on the other. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TV Shows

Non-H*R-related TV userbox removed.

TV shows are of peripheral interest at best to the H*R corpus. As such, I'd like to see NO official userboxes highlighting TV, movie or other non-H*R-related media at all. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:28, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

I agree. From the project page: Userboxes should be "related to your Homestar Runner experience (favorite toon, what you like to do on the wiki, etc.). Thank you for remembering what the wiki is about." — It's dot com 23:31, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Hmm. The second one's not really "related to your Homestar Runner experience" so I don't think it can be added to the project page itself. [edit] A-peeling Potatoes

I wanna make one that's like this:

"This user is currently a-peeling... POTATOES!"

Is there an image for that? -Matt sportsinterviews -6 Feb 2008

There is now! Link NNoah
There's also another one on his talk page. -PeterImage:Petersig.png
Yeah, I should have put it here, too, to begin with.. rather than just on his talk page. Would've saved you some effort, NNoah. Sorry about that. You guys should really sign your posts with a time stamp, btw. =] OptimisticFool 00:11, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't mind. I just thought that if nobody responde to the first message that it wasn't solved or something. The One and Only NNoah 4 July 2008

[edit] SBCG4AP and friends

I made a userbox for the Strong Bad Dev Blog, but am not sure which category (if any) it would be filed under on the main userbox page?

I admit I'm biased, but I'm hoping that once the SBCG4AP episodes start coming out, they'll spawn a few more Cool Game for Attractive People-related userboxes (achievements received, favorite episodes, or whatever people might decide to make?), but they don't fit in any of the existing categories. A userbox about the dev blog isn't a Game, or a Spinoff Universe, or a Toon, nor is it really an in-joke for the Fun category. Any propositions for where an SBCG4AP-related userbox might go would be awesome. Thanks! TTGJake 16:51, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

It's most related to games, so I'd say games. — It's dot com 18:38, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] userbox-r template

I just noticed that we don't have the userbox-r template installed. I know we've had rare times where things are flipped or backwards in the Homestar Runner Universe, but I'd like to be able to create a userbox using that template. Could it be added? --70.143.29.193 00:14, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps if you explained what a "userbox-r" template IS, someone would know how to do it. — DeFender1031*Talk 00:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Ooops, Sorry! The userbox template that has the ID portion on the right side. --70.143.29.193 00:22, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Bringing back this discussion, now that I have an account I'd like to somehow get the userbox-r template on here, which is basically a normal userbox with the template cells switched, and is used on Wikipedia. Would it be best to get some ParserFunctions into our userbox template, or should I just make an independent userbox-r template? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 22:18, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Linux

I'm not very tech savvy so I don't know how to do this, but does anyone think that we should change the Linux userbox picture to a close up of Open Source Greg's laptop? It would be more Homestar Runner-y than the one we have now. Later! Coach 's Cool! 18:26, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that would be distinctive enough to signify linux. There are other open source operating systems, after all. — DeFender1031*Talk 18:42, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
True, but Open Source Greg's laptop has a penguin on it, so it's a reference to Linux. Coach 's Cool! 21:17, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Not really break dancing

I'm not good at .gif-ing, but could someone make a userbox that says "This user is not really break dancing" with a picture of the awesome animated gif/gif of the cute breakdancing rodent from isp? I would be slightly indebted to you. Bleu Ninja Image: STBsprite.PNG‎ 01:05, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] HRwiki before HR?

Does anyone like this one?

HRW

I mean, I found the HRwiki before the site. Oh, and if someone could fix that extending box, I'd be really greatful. Oh, and could someone put it on the page, too?

Fixed. Not sure if i think it belongs on the page or not. — DeFender1031*Talk 19:20, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Just curious; Why would you want a userbox if you don't even have an account? free 19:25, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I've got an account. I just forgot the pass. X_x (No E-mail either). I used to be Homsartifact124.

Costume

And where should I put it?

Nihaho13 00:44, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

...no body seems to oppose, so I'll put it in. If you don't think it's good, then my comback is that it deserves to be there because as you know I'm not the only one who was in a costume commentary, and I'm prety sure that a wiki member won the contest...At least I hope you know. Nihaho13 21:30, 23 November 2009 (UTC) (I also suggest you put a picture of your costume in it instead of the plain "Costume".)

[edit] new userbox!

[edit] How about this one?

Muttbrain 04:36, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

My philosophy about this page (which may differ from official policy, mind you) is that the less we have here, the better. In other words, I think we should avoid adding userboxes onto this page. It's not that I don't like custom userboxes. On the contrary, I think they're great. However, I am much more likely to find a userbox I like on someone else's page than on this 82 kilobyte monstrosity. Putting a userbox on here shouldn't mean that it's an official userbox or something like that. This should be a place to look for example userboxes, and also for learning how to make your own. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 04:56, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

[edit] words of wisdom

I think there should be more "random quote" userboxes, kind of like the homsar one. Example: these. Just a suggestion. -- Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 23:34, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Those ones we already have only exist because we have the random quote function for them (which existed before the userboxes were created and serve an actual purpose besides the userboxes). --DorianGray 06:38, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Too long, Clanky, too long!

The page is very long, so here are some suggestions:

  • Split the page into some different pages, like Fun Userboxes, Store Userboxes, etc.
  • Delete some userboxes. For example, here are some of the userboxes that we probably don't need to have:
HRWiki:Userboxes

Nah. It's fine. — DeFender1031*Talk 07:20, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Hey wait

I think you forgot to make an Opera userbox, some people use that browser, ya know --90.197.11.150 16:07, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Nor does it have Silk, or probably any number of browser-related userboxes. We don't need 'em; they'd clutter up the page. Users can make their own userboxes pretty easily, so (if you make an account) you can create your own Opera userbox on your page. SRMX12 (talk/cont) 17:27, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
