[edit] Seamonkey

Yeah, I heard about it way back in some computer magazine. I don't want to download it yet, personally. I'm fine with Mozilla for right now. Just, if it loads faster, PLEASE TELL ME! Bluebry 21:37, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

The speed with which it initially loads isn't much different, but it seems to be slightly faster when it stays in the system tray than Mozilla was. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 23:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Maybe it's that you forgot the "User" namespace. Or it's that you added a user to the patrol without letting that user know. I mean, I think that's trolling! --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:20, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
X-Spider2, if you look a little more carefully, you'll see that ACupOfCoffee didn't make that edit, which probably explains his confusion about The thing bringing it up here. -- Tom 13:42, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Animated Images

Hi there Cup 'O Coffee. Since you've sort of spearheaded the image organization, I figured I'd bring this question up with you. I've noticed images like this, this and this are marked with the screenshot template. However they seem to me to be more "animations" than "screenshots". Is there another template that could be made that would clarify under what grounds we reproduce the animation, or does it even fall under "fair use"? Thanks, Thunderbird 18:40, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

According to Wikipedia:Screenshot, screenshots aren't necessarily stills, thought they almost always are. However, while looking this up, I found out that we should have been using {{video-screenshot}}for the entire screen of a toon and {{Character-artwork}} for images like the ones on character evolution pages. I've asked for some clarification on this just to make sure that if I go on another image tagging spree, we won't wind up having to revert most of it. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:08, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
Aparently, the video tag was created with flash animations in mind, so this is going to be another project. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:34, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Wait, so you are saying pretty much all of the images tagged with {{web-screenshot}} should be changed to {{video-screenshot}}? How come Wikipedia's Template:Video-screenshot defaults to a category called "Screenshots of movies and television"? I see your question and the answer on Template talk:Video-screenshot, but who is this User:Cohesion fellow? Is he like one of Wikipedia's equivilant to our wiki's you? And if the intent of their Template:Video-screenshot was for screenshots of toons like Homestar Runner, why is the cat for it "Screenshots of movies and television"? (I asked this one over there too.) -- Tom 23:33, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Taggin'?

A few images without templates Thunderbird 22:09, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

The GNU head image has copyright info on it, and I think it would be useless to create a template for the Free Art License when its forseeable usage is just that image. The rest are going to need source information before we really know what thier status is. In the future you can always use {{no license}} to put them in the "unknown copyright status" category. It's on my watchlist, so I'll catch it. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:14, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Understandable, would you be able to think of an applicable category to put the GNU image in then, without a template? As for the three personal image images, Dot com made them himself, and he's tagging them now with a copywrite [sic] templates. Thunderbird 01:31, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Maybe a new one called "Free images"? Then Category:Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 images, Category:GFDL images, and Category:LGPL images would be subcategories of that one. And the one in question would be the only image directly in it. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 02:16, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
I've uploaded Image:Copyleft.png and created Template:fal and Category:FAL images. -- Tom 03:59, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
That works too. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:47, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image optimization

Hey, ACupOfCoffee. I noticed that you optimized Image:Let her rip.png and Image:Single-button remote control.png for the web. For my own future reference when uploading images, what does it take to make an image optimal for the web? Thanks! Trey56 04:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I mostly used the phrase "optimized for web" to vary the edit summary. I was really just re-encoding it as to produce the smallest file size possible. A link to the webpage where I learned how to set my computer up for doing that in two clicks is on my fanstuff user page. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Weeklies?

Explain "updating the weeklies" to me like I was a stupid child. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:22, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

The weeklies (fanstuff, QoTW, and sketchbook) used to be in the rotating "what's new" list. Some of the main page screenshots don't have the new separate button format, and none of them have the random button, so I'm taking new screenshots. As a plus, some of them come out with a smaller file size (presumably because The GIMP's png compression is easier for pngcrush to optimize than MS Paint's is). BTW, were you quoting Denzel Washington in Philadelphia, or is that just a coincidence. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:32, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I never saw Philadelphia but I hope to. And great explanation! This should be in a more accesible place.... Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:57, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh - the empty sections are in the alphabetized lists so if someone, say, clicks the N in the TOC they'll have a place to go. Otherwise, the link in the TOC would not work and the page would seem broken. (The other option is to remove it from the TOC as well, but that doesn't look right.) So now we've learned from each other, nice. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 14:08, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Re: "some of them come out with a smaller file size" - the wiki doesn't use pngcrush on uploaded images, they're just stored as-is. And MSPaint's PNG compression is indeed abysmal... in some cases I've seen it around half the size of an uncompressed BMP... just opening it and saving it in The GIMP is often enough to shrink it, let alone pngcrush. --phlip TC 17:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
I know, but I've been using pngcrush on most of the PNG I upload myself. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 17:16, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Creative Commons version update

Hi there ACupOfCoffee. Just so you know, the option to release a Creative Commons licensed work under a later version of the license lies with the individual or entity exercising rights under the license, not the person who originally licensed it. The wording of any version of the license explicitly mentions that, so it's really released under version "2.0 or later". If the original author wanted to release it under 2.5, I'd imagine they'd have to release it under both, something like "released under license version 2.0, version 2.5, and all future versions" (but again, I don't think it really matters, since the "all future versions" part (and even the "version 2.5" part, since that is a later version of 2.0) is stated in the license itself, but some people like to put it out there).

I am not a lawyer, but that's my understanding of it. -- Tom 00:11, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sig

Thanks for the sig advice, man. In the near future (meaning when I am free of homework -_-) I will try to "jazz up" my sig. ;) Cinnabon37 02:53, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fonts

Noticed your question on fonts. I don't even know what Kristen is offhand, I need to look it up. Times New Roman is used on nearly every computer produced in the US, I believe, and Arial is a close second (though Apple users often prefer the similar but perhaps better Helvetica). You could do a simple poll, though. Like this.

  1. Does this look like a monospaced font? - if NO, then they don't have a monospace font, so following answers might not be helpful.
  2. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for Arial)
  3. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for TNR)
  4. Do these words look like a different font? (tests for Kristen ITC)

Then see what other users say. For me, the answers are Yes, Yes, Yes and no. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I see them all. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
They all look different to me as well. Shwoo 10:49, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Same here. A poll on Arial and Times New Roman does not make sense, though. Should these fonts not be available, then modern browsers will automatically choose an appropriate substite, for example Helvetica and Times. The above samples will still appear different from each other (i.e. with and without serifs). Each system should also have at least one monospaced font installed. Courier, for example. The real question here is whether people will see the weirdness of the Kristen fontLoafing 11:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Actually, that's not entirely true. To have that work, you need to set a font-family value as "Times New Roman", serif; or Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;. What actually happens in the absence of any font is the browser chooses the next font in the style declaration (and if you end in a generic name like serif, it chooses its default serif font - which in a misprogrammed browser might not even be a serif font!), or the style of the parent element, or the browser's default font for display of that element. If you declare (for everyday text) font-family: Arial; then if Arial is not installed the font chosen will be whatever the browser's designed to use, which is often a serif font. So it's kinda a crap shoot in some situations. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I think I only have it because it came with Microsoft Office 2000. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 22:43, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I see all the fonts above on this compy, including Kristen. Of course, I'm at a printing company and we have like a bajillion fonts, but I do see Kristen nevertheless. — It's dot com 15:53, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I cannot see Kristen, it just appears as a monospaced font. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 17:10, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Debian

It should run just fine! Heck! It might even run on a 386! Maybe. --Stux 21:25, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

That's good to know. The thing's been running Windows Me since we bought it and I've always suspected that is could run better than it currently does. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 21:36, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Have you looked into Ubuntu? I use it on a variety of computers from sub-1 Ghz processors with not much RAM to a few with AMD Athlon 64 processors with tons of RAM. Runs great, haven't had any problems in over two years with it. Though you also might want to look into Xubuntu if it's a really old compy. -- Tom 22:18, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Wow! you were running ME! I didn't know that was still around! I feel for you man. And yeah I've seen Ubuntu in action and it seems pretty straightforward. Debian's good too though. Good luck! Let us know how it's working for ya. --Stux 22:57, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
You won't believe what people are running these days. In tech support I see a lot of 98SEs and sometimes a 2000 or two each day. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:30, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Lol. Don't dis 2000! I still run it on several computers (including my desktop that died over the summer). And with the remote desktop client, I'm all set! Now 98SE... that's a different story! Now if you've run into 95 or Win 3.1 I might even consider giving you money! ;) --Stux 05:17, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
My dad still uses our first family computer which runs 95 no problem. I had a live Ubuntu CD at one point, but the CD drive on my laptop's given out, and I decided I didn't want to mess with booting from USB. Of course, that machine's running XP pro, so the only impending upgrades are another 256 megs of RAM and a bigger hard drive. Twenty gigs seemed near impossible to fill up in 2002, and just four years later I'm kicking myself for not getting the 30 gig disk. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 09:12, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
LOL. In '02 I had an 80 gig and was in the process of getting another one as backup or something. Now my 300 gig is not big enough! :S. Network sharing helps! This laptop only has a 10 GIG but I have access to my main PC via VPN and so I can get all my music and stuff. --Stux 18:21, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Weclome!

Hey man what's up!? I was noticing your spiffy welcome message and noticed that you had a word of "warning" in it. I just wanted to suggest that "warning" might be too strong of a word to use and might scare away new users a little. That's it. Other than that how's it going?! Sincerely, Not using your real name to protect the innocent. --Stux 21:54, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

While we're on the subject - I'm a little put off by the inclusion of "Most people here are pretty good about assuming stupidity [read: ignorance] rather than malice" - I'd think most users are going to think your assumption is that they are stupid, which I don't think is the case. I really recommend an overall new look at that welcome message with thought to how the average user would like to be welcomed. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Well to that last note I think it would be prudent to note that the original committe page has that very same quote of Hanlon's Razor. I might be good to point out that the quote isn't really meant to go in welcoming pages, and other clarification guidelines should be added as well, just to let other people know to be careful with their wording. This probably should continue in the committee page, thanks for letting us use your user page ACupOfCoffee! --Stux 05:59, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe I should read what I write more often. That thing does come across as pretty ominous. Thanks for letting me know. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:56, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Hey, I like the new version of the welcome :) Trey56 06:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Not a problem! Any time! Nice fixes! And what I meant to say before was that it would be good to mention this sort of thing in the committe page so that other people are made aware. --Stux 16:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] privaleges

"What discussion?" You know, the discussion link that appears at the top of every editable page? Yes, that one. There was an entry there explaining the logic behind what seemed to me to be a fairly cosmetic change to reflect audio accuracy, but apparently stirred up the hornet's nest.

By the way, was there a reason you deleted the "like I've lost my mind, because that truck" line that is said while Homestar is speaking about the pizza? That is definitely in the e-mail...why did you delete that?

Oh, I just undid the entire edit and I guess I didn't notice that part. It's been a while since I've watched that particular email and I thought the discussion should have progresses a bit before it was acted on. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:48, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Optimizing

You do very well optimizing screenshots, I'm always surprised to see how much smaller your files end up. What program/settings do you use? OptimisticFool 05:44, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

I use OptiPNG and PNGOUT. I used to use pngcrush, but these two generate smaller files most of the time. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
I've been trying them out and optipng seems to work very nicely with -o7. I can't quite figure out PNGOUT. That is, I've given up trying to figure out the settings of it, and have resigned myself to running optipng first, and then running PNGOUT as just "PNGOUT filename.png" and letting it do its thing. Sometimes it can compress the file more, and sometimes it can't. It depends on the file. Do you have any advice on the settings of PNGOUT? OptimisticFool 06:59, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
No, I just run both without any special configuration. All those options are beyond me. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 03:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
