Haldo

Yep, that's me (more or less)!

Hi, I'm Marty, a.k.a. Super Martyo Brother, a.k.a. SMB.

You've probably come to my page to find out about me, so here are some fun facts/random video links.

  • I live in Seattle
  • I'm Irish
  • I am a serious Çômpûtér Ñërd (that's pronounced ALT CODES ☺)
  • I enjoy baseball and the Mariners as well as basketball and the Storm rather than the Sonics because the Sonics haven't had a recent championship year, have they? (No, I'm not a girl)
  • My username is NOT based on anything except Mario in general because my sisters used to call me Mario instead of Marty way back when (and all the good names were taken, :( ).
  • My name is Marty (and i'm surprised that you can't take a hint if this is news to you).
  • I play RuneScape a lot, sometimes while trying to edit the Wiki.
  • I am the founder of the T(w)een Guy Squad
  • I love this video of Matt explaining how Strong Bad types with boxing gloves on.
  • Warning, following link goes to a harmless video with links to possibly offensive stuff. WHEE!!
  • I've made over 900 contributions to this wiki with 150+ of those being main namespace edits.
  • Look at how much we've I've grown!
User:Super Martyo Brother/userbox I can't tell you much more because of the Youth protection guidelines.

How I found the various things I did

Homestarrunner.com

One day, when I was 9, my cousin came over to my house and showed me the First Time Here? 'toon (unlike some friends who plunge right into the toons) and the Reddest Raddish. I was instantly hooked.

Strong Bad E-mail

Believe it or not, when I first saw Strong Bad Email on the 'toons menu, I thought it meant Strong Bad E-cards. Seriously. I avoided it until I decided to give one to my sister (although I didn't). The first one I watched was caffeine. I laughed so hard, the pop I was drinking came out of my nose (and it hurt). My favorite line to this day is:

STRONG SAD: No, no. Parakeet.
STRONG MAD: Did you just say parakeet?

The Wiki

I honestly have no idea how I found it. I remember now! For some reason, I was googling homestar runner, and I clicked on the link to the H*R Wiki. I remember the first article I looked at was actually flag day. I loved how it had Fun Facts and Easter Eggs, so I joined my first Wiki.

Special thanks to Loafing for letting me borrow his idea.

In whatever order I fell like putting them in.

For multiple character quotes, a key-type thing is provided (i.e. the long pants quote Marzipan's speech is in italics therefore here name is italicized).

Question of the week: Based on your definition last week, are you an active user? Please don't post your answer on my talk page.

What if we had quote boxes? Like at the top, or floating left/right Wikipedia-style... Ob'm know. I've added a lot to the tops of articles and sections (Oscar Wilde-style) and it might be nice to (a) standardize w/ a template (b) do something a little snazzier than blockquotes. Some rough style explorations made by editing notices:

  • Comments:
  • The current quotes have been added for comparison. --Stux 19:57, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
  • If we turn this into a template, the image sizes are inconsistent: Matt's image is 60px, SB's is 24px, and SS's is 36px. I thought {{qotwheads}} could be of use but that's for a completely different context.
    • Ah, the template I was looking for was {{head}} but that can't be used either. That said, I've made both head images 35px to see what they look like. --Stux
  • I've added earlier samples for comparison. --Stux
  • Regardless of the format we choose, I think creating a template that allows consistent quote formatting would be a good thing(TM).
    • That said, there are several questions that should be answered:
    • How do we handle quotes with multiple speakers? {{canonquote}} has at least one example.
    • This leads to a design decision that I think needs to be done early on: do we include the name of the speaker (as with the current "transcript" style format) or not? In the transcript style, the speaker name is not a template parameter, it must be added by hand, but that allows us to link to the speaker however we want. Otherwise, the speaker would most likely be a template parameter, but that breaks down if we have multiple speakers.
    • Do we have more examples of non-standard quotes that we can reference? --Stux

Would certainly be open to moving this to the HRWiki:Project space if it's something that other editors think is worth pursuing beyond my fiddlin' around. My thought process was to identify a very basic layout — i.e. what color/outline is the box, do we italicize or "enclose in quotes" or both or neither — and do basic problem solving to make sure it can work alongside a right-floating image thumb rather than solve for every case. I was mainly referencing how Template:Quote box on WP is used (i.e. for a phrase shared by only one speaker) to avoid getting caught up in how to deal with more complicated scenarios. As far as non-standard quote examples, some articles to look at include Batman, How do you type with boxing gloves on?, and the UMFM snippets on most main character pages. -- Bleu Ninja 20:45, 1 July 2025 (UTC)

Shark-Tooth Bubs

"I'm going to go throw up at your house!"

From "A Date with Homestar Runner" at New York University, 2005:

MATT CHAPMAN: We were getting these stuffed animals of The Cheat made. To show us that they were the right people for the job, this company in Hong Kong made some little six-inch plush dolls of our characters. Most of them they got pretty good! And then... Bubs they just completely misinterpreted.

Shark-Tooth Bubs is a plush doll prototype of Bubs that sharply deviates from his character design. Rather than two mismatched eyes, one black and one blue with a white ring, he has two black eyes and a large protruding white-ringed horn; his teeth are pointed and shark-like rather than rectangular.

Rather than two mismatched eyes, one black and one blue with a white ring, he has two black eyes and a large protruding white-ringed horn; his teeth are pointed and shark-like rather than rectangular.

The plush toy was created by a company in Hong Kong, during the pre-production of the Kick The Cheat dolls. To demonstrate their ability to adapt The Cheat to three dimensions, the toy company produced sample plush dolls of Strong Bad, Homestar Runner, Marzipan, and Bubs (the first two of which have also been shown). Though the first three were created largely on-model, the manufacturer "misinterpreted pretty much everything" about Bubs's odd design, resulting in the inclusion of fangs and a horn.

Easter egg

Decompiled Flash Easter Eggs

From a 2007 talk at the Georgia Tech library:

MATT CHAPMAN: People are poking around, they decompile our Flash files and look at stuff. So we've started adding a few things here and there for the nerds that do that stuff. There's one where these two Homestars appear — like, it appears that there's two Homestars, you can barely see the edge of his feet on that side of the frame, that's in the actual cartoon. But then, to make it consistent in the universe, one of them has a mustache. But you only see it if you decompile the Flash thing and be like, "Oh, that's Homestar with a mustache."

Appearances

Who actually made all those fence drawings...
  • All Halloween Teasers — The teasers feature messages hidden behind the silhouettes of the characters, visible upon attempting to view the Halloween costumes with a Flash decompiler (presuming that they are obscured versions of the full image).
  • Email different town — Marzipan has a secondary hairdo when decompiled.
  • Email myths & legends — When the ancient fence drawings are viewed outside the border, the words "by strong bab age 5" can be found.

Abdi LaRue

Roll that beautiful email footage!

From a @StrongBadActual Tweet from 16 April 2020:

Abdi is real! An early fan I actually had to ask to specifically email me because nobody knew I had an email address yet!

In 2001, Abdi LaRue made Homestar Runner history as the first of hundreds to have an email personally answered by Strong Bad. Future Strong Bad Emails would make brief tribute to this unknown figure.

Inconsistencies within the Homestar Runner universe

Comment: this one uses {{canonquote}} under the hood!
Is Bubs' right? Or is it left?
From a @StrongBadActual tweet (11 Aug 2019):
STRONG BAD: The more ye searcheth for canon in mine universe, the less canon ye shall findeth.

Inconsistencies large and small occur throughout the toons portraying the Homestar Runner universe. The Homestar Runner body of work is primarily created independently by The Brothers Chaps, without use of a dedicated style guide or continuity supervisor, allowing for discrepancies to accumulate over the 20-plus years of production.

Furthermore, Homestar Runner relies heavily on whimsical, surreal, and absurd humor. Much like comedic inspirations Looney Tunes or The Three Stooges, toons are largely independent of one another; though some elements remain as constants, various minor facets of settings or characterization may be changed or ignored to better tell a joke or set a scene. Because Homestar Runner is not narrative-driven, complete consistency and total continuity are not goals and very minor inconsistencies are common between cartoons. The site's FAQ recommends that fans remember "it's just a cartoon and you probably shouldn't worry about it."

Comment: here's the flag day quote with two speakers and multiple lines (from {{canonquote}})

From the flag day commentary:
MIKE CHAPMAN: We're not very consistent with our scale.
MATT CHAPMAN: Yeah... We should make a style guide.
MIKE CHAPMAN: You can make a style guide.
MATT CHAPMAN: Yeah, you make one, more like.

Comment: might as well go for broke and include all the other quotes from {{canonquote}})

Content That Addresses Things The Brothers Chaps Have Said (working title)

Wavy-armed Bubs

In interviews, public appearances, and commentaries, The Brothers Chaps sometimes mention things that end up being addressed in future content in the Homestar Runner body of work.

Repurposed Content

Things shown at events are sometimes repurposed for later content.

Other Examples

  • retroCRUSH InterviewMike Chapman expresses interest in producing figurines. These would later be sold in the Store.
  • Run Devil Run Interview — Mike says he'd "like to get the stuff out on DVD sometime in the near future", which would happen the following year.
  • Giant Magazine Interview — Mike mentions that the "anime version of Homestar" is named either Extra Man or 1-Up. The latter name would be confirmed in Stinkoman 20X6.
  • Zoinks! Magazine InterviewMatt Chapman "thought about having Strong Sad make one of those NES sprite comics using the sprites from our Stinkoman game", an idea that would be explored with Strong Bad instead in web comics.
  • Adventure Gamers Interview - 2 Sept 2004 — Matt brings up a Scalding Lake T-shirt as a possibility. This would later be made available in the Store.
  • invisibility (DVD commentary) — The Brothers Chaps tentatively decide on the name "Lappy 486" for Strong Bad's next computer.
  • do over (DVD commentary) — The commentary was recorded before the email was made. In it, The Brothers Chaps make some "executive decisions", like the email's title and basic premise, and Strong Sad not appearing. Multiple points in the email are timed to the brothers' fake reactions, like Homestar's appearance and Strong Bad hitting Homestar with a keyboard.
  • Georgia Tech - 26 Apr 2007
    • Matt Chapman mentions that due to the shifting background color, the DVDs' FBI warning screens are animated at a higher frame rate, making it especially hard to animate The Cheat. On strongbad_email.exe Disc Five, released just over a month later, the background color doesn't shift, allowing The Cheat to be animated at the usual framerate.
    • Matt Chapman talked about how halfway animations aren't very possible at 12fps, the frame rate of most toons, using Homestar Runner's mouth as an example. Homestar Runner eventually gained a half-open mouth, despite Matt saying "you're not going to get that much more in between."
    • Mike Chapman recalls the apparent pain of animating Bubs's arms. His arm movements have since changed, presumably for ease of animation.
    • Matt raises the possibility of Stinkoman 20X6 level 10 releasing alongside alternate difficulties and level midpoints, which would come to pass over a decade later.
  • road trip (DVD commentary) — Mike mentions that the band that plays Jammin' Tunes and The Dancing Brothers' song could be called "The Power Surge or something". They would return as "The Pow-uh Surge" in Trogdor Was A Man.
  • Late Nite JengaJam Interview - 4 Oct 2007
    • The host, JengaShip, reminisces about the Powered by The Cheat updates. Matt agrees that "[they're] probably due" for new Powered by The Cheat cartoons. Rap Song was released roughly a month later.
    • When asked which character he would kill off, Matt mentions that Pom Pom "would be a good one" because "it would be really, really tragic". Pom Pom would briefly be killed in I Killed Pom Pom.
  • ROFLCon - 26 Apr 2008 — All of the panelists, which consisted of Internet celebrities such as The Brothers Chaps, signed an OLPC XO-1 laptop that was later auctioned for charity, perhaps inspiring the Happy 8600.
