If there is, I'd like to know how. I wrote the article about Strong Bad changing the topic of his e-mails, and I liked it the way it was, but somebody changed all of it and I think it has less information. I also can't change it back. Is there a way to fix it or keep people from editing it? Thnikky
 +
:Well, you see, Thnikky, this is a [[Wikipedia:wiki|wiki]]. ''Anyone'' can edit pretty much ''any'' article, and we don't protect articles just for the benefit of one editor. You can access the previous versions of a page using the history tab at the top. From there, you can get elements from old versions and combine them with the current version, or revert to an older version altogether (note, we don't usually revert big changes except in cases of vandalism; instead, we try to keep the best parts of all the versions). Hope that helps! &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:25, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

This is probably answered somewhere else, but I have to go out for the day, and I'm leaving in 5 minutes, so I'm just gonna ask and leave it with you. 142.177.97.77 added [[Little Girl]] to the reject characters page, with the whole page simply 'bum hole'. Does this constitute a Wiki Troll? If it does, what steps do I take to insure that this Troller of Wikis is brought to justice? Is there any sort of general system of protocols?

I haven't finished one of my articles, and I've seen a lot of these box-things that say if an article isn't finished. As for mine, I haven't had much time to work on it, how do I put one of those boxes on there? ([[User:Dynamite|Dynamite]] 10:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC))

I moved the content from the "[[Inside Jokes]]" to the [[:Category:Inside Jokes|category]] of the same name.  (First I made sure all the inside jokes had references to this category.) == Username question ==
-
:Not so much. I'm not really sure the software will allow a redirect to a category, but its kind of a moot point in this situation.  As noted correctly by [[User:The Paper]], content should be on a main namespace page, not a category namespace page.  I do understand where you are coming from though. Several of the pages in [[:Category:Lists]] seem like they would be good candidates for just category pages.  This is partly because of the way in which we use catagories around here and partly because of the way we list things. In fact, we actually kind of do something with the [[:Category:Filmography|filmographies]] like what I think you tried to do.  I'm not really sure what I just said will make any sense, but just know that content should be on good 'ol regular pages.[[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]] --  [[User:Tom|Tom]] 19:10, 24 Oct 2004 (MST)

Why does the HR wiki ask that usernames can't be directly named after Homestar Runner characters? Thanks! Thnikky Oh, sorry about all the questions. I'm just a little new to editing and everything (but I've been using hrwiki.org since 2005)
 +
:This is one of the oldest rules on the wiki. It's generally restricted to just the main characters. Besides the fact that using the name of a main character is unoriginal, it's too confusing to discuss the characters if users have the exact same names. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 00:23, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I just realized this when I was last editing my userpage:
 +
If you can post on a user page (for example, an image from another website (like how users are posting 'personality quiz' answers (I have one of those on my user page) or 'trainer cards' (some users are posting customizable Pokemon trainer cards)) can we do that instead of posting personal images? (like if you wanted to post a picture of a singer you like...i dunno....like David Bowie for showing hobbies/interests)

:If you don't have this image on your computer, the save it first. On the sidebar on the left side on any page on the wiki click on Upload File. Click on Browse and choose the file from the folder it's saved on. Please add a Summary and a Licensing and then click Upload. After a few seconds you will be directed to a new page with instructions on how to put this image in any page. On your user page click edit, and add the specified code at the place you want the image to appear. If you need any other help, try consulting our [[Help:Contents|help pages]]. By the way, when you write something on a talk page, please end it with four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) so it will add your username and a date, like so: {{User:E.L. Cool/sig}} 23:46, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

::One other thing: as this is going to be a personal image, be sure to include the personal image template - <nowiki>{{personal-image|Jorbs3210}}</nowiki>. That indicates it is not for the knowledge base, it is rather for personal use. {{User:Qermaq/sig}} 09:24, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

:::The easiest way for you to put it on your user page is actually to not upload it to the wiki and just put the URL to the image on your user page: <nowiki>http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/jorbs3210/Sad_mac.png</nowiki> That will make the image appear on your user page.{{User:Loafing/sig}} 20:43, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, my name is Peter and I was just wondering when will Trogdor or any body else from Homestar Runner be in a movie?  If they already have please tell me.

Can someone help me? I never got my confirmation email. I joined as "bottles98" with the email address strong_bad@homestarrunner.us a couple of weeks ago (yes, that's my real email address, my friend registered homestarrunner.us as a domain name and gave me a mail address at it.) I use Yahoo! Mail which may be the problem, is there anyway an admin could maybe auto-confirm my account or something? I'd really appriciate it.

:When anyone edits a category page, the only thing available to edit is the text at the top of the page.  The rest of the content is generated automagically by MediaWiki.  That's how categories work.  For example, [[:Category:Strong_Bad_Email]] only contains a short note at the top of the page regarding the emails.  The actual content of the page (the actual links to the email pages) is generated by MediaWiki.  Of course, a much better and more detailed explanation of how categories work can be found in the [[MetaWikiPedia:Help:Category|user's guide]].[[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]]  --  [[User:Tom|Tom]] 10:20, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)

Take a look at [[Special:Uncategorized Pages]].  Apparently there exist pages called "Kobe#1" and "Kobe#2" but whenever I try to get my browser to access these, it just loads [[Kobe]] (since the # character in a URL signifies an anchor identifier).  I know that the pages are there and all different by entering "kobe" into the search, which shows that each of the three pages has a different number of bytes.

:The "#" character [[HRWiki:Naming conventions (technical restrictions)#Excluded characters|is disallowed]].  The links for "Kobe#1" and "Kobe#2" both just link to the [[Kobe]] page.  The "#" on each doesn't do anything in this situation because MediaWiki uses the # to link to sections, like with [[Strong Bad Email#Strong Bad Email Raps]].  Since there aren't sections for "1" and "2" on the Kobe page, the software just sends the user to the top of the page.  To fix this, all you have to do is create pages like [[Kobe 1]] and [[Kobe 2]], move the content, fix [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Kobe the links to the page], and mark the [[Kobe]] page [[:Category:To be deleted|for deletion]].  No special [[privileges]] are needed.[[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]]  --  [[User:Tom|Tom]] 10:14, 3 Dec 2004 (MST)

Not to sound like a newb (hey, I checked through all the faqs like a good li'l MetaStar :) but why is this wiki anti-gif? Does it have to do with some well thought of software product (eg. server-side image munging software, imagemagick, et al) that has weak/no support for GIF's due to copyright stodginess, or simple protest of copyright fiascos, or afinity for things that PNG can do that GIF can't (eg. multilevel transparency unsupported in IE) or the general view that PNG's always pack smaller than gifs? (I know that in many cases GIF's pack smaller..)  and/or just a call for consistency after considering that PNG's win most battles over GIF's?

I agree that for the Knowledge Base, spelling should be the same for the whole article (or maybe the whole Knowledge Base). But for the Fanstuff Wiki, the place is for people's creations. If they choose to create a fanstuff item, it is their creation, not other people's (unless they allow it). The person who changes to "proper spelling" it would most likely be their first and only visit to that particular page. There is no reason at all to go searching (in the Fanstuff Wiki) for "colour" and "color".

A message to people who go out of their way, wasting time searching for so-called "spelling errors": American English isn't the only language. :One thing I don't understand is this "their creation" business.  Do people realize that they are adding content to a [[Wikipedia:Wiki|wiki]]?  If people wanted to retain ownership and editing rights to their content, what were they thinking posting it on a wiki?  Wikis are all about having content that can be edited by anybody.
+
-
:If people want ownership of pages, we should probably get rid of the fanstuff wiki and let them each get their own websites. :Hmm... This is a tough one.  For consistency's sake, we should have one spelling standard, and since H*R is an American site, the default should be American EnglishYou raise a valid point, Dr. Haggis; the move to international spellings has some weight behind it, but I'm ultimately swayed by the fact that the H*R site itself features American spellings, and it would be inconsistent to transcribe Strong Bad's line as "colour" when he types "color," for example.

::As much as I like consistency, I would never change British English spelling to American spelling on a page.  There isn't a "correct" way of doing things in this regard.  Though I still wouldn't want to have two sentences one right after the other with two different spellings for the same word.

If you'll look at the post above this one, I answered on how to create a new page. It's a different way that what we [[HRWiki:FAQ#How do I start a new article?|currently suggest]], and I think my way is better, because you also search for the term you are about to create a page about, and with it have fewer steps (Just searching, instead of editing the whole sandbox). Therefore, I think we should change the FAQ. {{User:Elcool/sig}} 06:11, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
 +
:Sure, why not. I rarely create a page using the redlink method, and only then when it branches off a real page, never from the sandbox. The way you suggest is probably the easiest method to put in the FAQ. It's not the method with the least amount of steps, though. That would be to go to <code><nowiki>http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Some new page</nowiki></code> and then click the create tab. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 16:01, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

:That's a wonderful compliment to pay a Wiki; thanks!  Yes, anyone can edit, but most of the people who return to the Wiki care enough about the site to make it as useful, professional, and polished as possible. The site isn't without its "Internet speech"; if you read through the personal spaces of users, you'll see quite a bit of it.  But if it appears in an article, another editor will take it out fairly quickly.  Several users monitor the [[Special:Recentchanges|recent changes]] page to make sure that trolling and incomprehensible edits are removed.  The moderators also do a wonderful job (er, a great jorb) of upholding the high [[HRWiki:Standards|standards]]. However (I don't have any statistics, so someone may contradict me on this), I've observed that most spelling errors and grammatic mistakes are corrected by first-time users or people who edit very rarely.  So, perhaps there's yet`hope for intellectual integrity on the Internet! =) --[[User:FortyTwo|FortyTwo]] 21:42, 10 Jan 2005 (MST)

:Well, who ever you are (please sign your posts), to become a forum moderator an administrator or another moderator has to give you the rights to it. I was wondering if it would be acceptable to make a account for at school, i.e. since my main account is <b>LikeLakers2</b>, (I'm not making this logged in for security reasons, since its from a shared school computer) I could name it <b>LikeLakers2School</b>, or maybe <b>LL2School</b>. One of the main security reasons is that, if I accidentally forget to logout of the school account, that a vandalism by someone other than me, using my account, would not be as likely to be charged against my main account. This is a question directed toward the mods, but could I have permission to temporarily upload an mp3 for the purposes of maybe clearing up the voting on a fun fact in STUFF. (specifically, the fact labeled "Ping" under the [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/dreamail dreamail] heading.) Just to summarize what I've written on there, I thought that if I uploaded a clip from the song Echoes (which is under debate for this fact) temporarily to let people listen to it, this could help people who didn't want to vote due to not knowing enough about the song, or potentially change the votes of others. Any quick response would be greatly appreciated on this. --[[User:TheNintenGenius|TheNintenGenius]] 21:13, 23 Jan 2005 (MST)

Then I can choose to Open the page with a file, save the page to a disk, or cancel.

Opening it and downloading do seem to work, and cancelling doesn't help. After I get this message, the page in questing won't load for a while.

This probably sounds stupid, but can non-admins create new pages? There are a few topics that don't have pages that could be on the site. Just wondering.
+

+
-
:The nice part about a wiki is that just about anybody can do just about anything. I myself am not an admin, but I've begun several pages. So if you think we need a new page, feel free to jump right in and create it.
+
-

+
-
:It's easy:
+
-
:#Up in the title bar, right after "index.php/", type the name of your new page. (Be sure to capitalize it how you think it should be, and include any appropriate punctuation (subject to the [[HRWiki:Naming conventions (technical restrictions)|naming restrictions]]).) You will be taken to a blank page.
+
-
:#Next, click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page. You're all set to write your content!
+
-
:#When you're just about done, click "Show preview" at the bottom.
+
-
:#Carefully look over your text, noting any problems with spelling, grammar, formatting, or broken links. Fix these as necessary, and click "Show preview" again.
+
-
:#Repeat the previous step until you think the page is ready to be published.
+
-
:#Finally, click "Save page" and voilà.
+
-

+
-
:If you haven't already, read the [[HRWiki:Standards|Standards]] page. You can also get a sense of the style by looking at the source code of other pages.
+
-

+
-
:If the page is useful, it will be kept and embraced by thousands of HRWiki-goers. (You should note, however, that it will be edited mercilessly. And if enough people don't think the new page is useful, it could be removed altogether. Not that it ''will'' be removed, mind you, but you should be aware of that going in.)
+
-

In case anyone wonders what I'm doing, I'm going down this talk page list and adding worthy questions to the main FAQ. :The list at the bottom of the Strong Bad Emails aren't really special - someone simply sat down and typed them all in (though it only went up to [[pizzaz]] when it was first started). The magic happens because they weren't typed into the bottom of each email, but rather into [[Template:Strong Bad Email]]. Then all you have to do is put <nowiki>{{Strong Bad Email}}</nowiki> at the bottom of each email to get the list. Magic because the list is [[HRWiki:Once And Only Once|only in one place]], so when a new email comes out they just have to change the template and all the email pages are updated. --[[User:phlip|phlip]] 11:12, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

I was looking around The Stick, and I saw some things about the recent changes comittie, so i read them., I decided I'd try to patrol a page to see what it was like, so I did what it said, and it worked fine. My question is, couldn't someone write vandalism on a page and falsely patrol it, so that there i no exclamation point next to it? Sure, it would be found sooner or later, but I think you should somehow make it so that only people on the recent changes comittie can patrol pages, and make a small process to go through to get on the recent changes committie. Thanks - [[User:Ju Ju Master|Ju Ju Master]] (Sorry about the unsigned post, and i don't have those squiggly dashes on this comp)

:That's impossible- you can't strict patrolling edits to the committee. Only logged in users can patroll, though, and trolls usually don't create usernames. It doesn't happen to often that a patrolled edit is trolling without something done about it. I don't think you have to much to worry about. :"Mark as partrolled" is hardly the be-all-and-end-all, most edits are seen by a lot of people both before and after someone actually clicks that button - the patrol is just one part of the community that keeps the wiki clean. {{User:phlip/sig}} 18:28, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I CAN!!!!!! Okay, to take a picture on a Mac, hold  Command + Shift + 4 and your cursor should turn into a crosshair. Drag the cursor around the section that you want to take a picture of, and release it. Then, go to your Hard disk, and in it should be a file called "Picture 1", which is the picture you took. You can save it, rename it, whatever you want with it. But it maay not upload properly on the wiki, so if you have another site, upload it to your site and link to it from the wiki so ppl can see it. --{{User:Darklinkskywalker/DLSsignature}} 02:55, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)

I've been trying to get my signature to have a little picture in it, but whenever I test it it doesn't come out as a link.  Is there a way to make this work?  This is what I have, and nothing I can think of seems to fix it.<br>[[User:Some HSR themed username|Some[[Image:small_logo.png]]themed username]] <br>[[User:Some HSR themed username|Some HSR themed username]] 01:44, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

:You need to find out the URL of the image (which for the image you want is http://www.hrwiki.org/images/a/a6/small_logo.png), then externally link to the page you want (the full URL, which is for your userspace http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/User:Some_HSR_themed_username). So just use this code: <code><nowiki>[http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/User:Some_HSR_themed_username http://www.hrwiki.org/images/a/a6/small_logo.png]</nowiki></code>. That'll put a little box with an arrow coming out icon, so you can put <code><nowiki><div class="boilerplate plainlinks"> </div></nowiki></code> around it, but that'll add an extra line (for some reason). {{User:Rainer/sig}} 01:54, 5 Jul 2005 (UTC)

:Well, I'm not going to email you, but I'll keep trying to help you here. Depending on how your computer is set up to access your ISP, you could be getting a different IP every time you log on. If that's the case, you may have stumbled onto an IP that was banned for some reason or another. Try this: shut down your computer completely, and if you have an external cable/DSL modem, refresh it. Then restart your computer and try logging on again. If that doesn't work, email [mailto:tom@hrwiki.org tom@hrwiki.org] and explain the situation to him. I don't know if I have been doing something wrong, but I don't think I did anything right either.  Here's the story:
+
-
+
-
I was looking for an avatar, and I found this really great one, and it was made by another user.  She said that if I wanted one, then I had to leave a message saying that I was going to use it.  So I did, and I thought to make it my avatar, being brand new here, and not knowing anything about computers in the slightest, I should upload the file.  Big mistake.  It's now on my contribution page in my Fanstuff account, and now I think that I have accidently taken credit for the picture.  Am I correct, and if I am, how do I delete the picture from my contributions.--[[User:Thecheat1234|Thecheat1234]] 18:36, 27 Jul 2005 (UTC)
+
-
:Well, it shows up in your contributions because ''you'' uploaded it. There's nothing you can do about that, and you shouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone's going to accuse you of trying to steal credit, and if they do, you can politely correct them. If you want to use that image, I don't see anything wrong with uploading it to the Fanstuff. I have a few questions about the wiki/fan page.
+

My English is, because I'm Dutch and 15 years old, very crappy.

I've made two HR-related drawings, and I would like to show them on the fan page. Do I have to sign up to do that? And if so, where can I do that? If you want to show an image, does it have to be already uploaded somewhere on the internet?

On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if they had fixed something minor here and there anonymously. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 03:57, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

:Thanks for the link. The page doesn't explicitly address my question, though it does provide an answer by example: it places commas/periods outside quotation marks, in the British style. I can't help but notice a contrast with the spelling used on the site, which is typically American ("color" rather than "colour," "racket" rather than "racquet.") Is it worth someone (me? someone more experienced?) adding a section to the standards page describing which spellings & which forms of punctuation are preferred? -- [[User:Caradhras|Caradhras]] 06:34, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hmm.. I'm not positive about that. I guess that would be up to someone more expirenced (although, I do know some things, I'm still a bit new to some of the wiki's standars as well). I'm thinking that since most of the people who visit The wiki and the Homestar Runner site itself are mostly American, then they use American punctuation and spelling. But, i'm sure someone around here can help you out. Also, if you want to sign your name, just type in four tildes:<code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code>. It will automaticly put your name up after editing a post.  {{User:Homestramy20/sig}} 06:40, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

:There isn't really one standard, nor do I think there should be, due to the vastly different things that get quoted around here. For running text, punctuation inside the quotation marks is usually appropriate: ''"One o' them said they'd buy me lunch. But I don't see nobody taking me to Chick-fil-A."'' For other things, it is sometimes better to put the punctuation ''outside'' the quotation marks: ''One of the links in the navbar is called "rando".'' That way, there's no doubt as to whether the punctuation is part of the link or not. It basically comes down to which particular style fits a given sentence. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 23:08, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

:The simple answer to your question, RHRN, is that edits get reverted because the wiki isn't ''your'' opinion, it's a compromise of everyone's. The fact that Homestar seems like characters from Crash Bandicoot is your opinion, and until [[The Brothers Chaps|TBC]] reveal that they were influenced by it, you can't prove it. The only way something exists on the wiki is if a majority of people agree with it. Reverting isn't a personal insult. &mdash;[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 18:23, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Is there a way to keep someone from editing my articles?

If there is, I'd like to know how. I wrote the article about Strong Bad changing the topic of his e-mails, and I liked it the way it was, but somebody changed all of it and I think it has less information. I also can't change it back. Is there a way to fix it or keep people from editing it? Thnikky

Well, you see, Thnikky, this is a wiki. Anyone can edit pretty much any article, and we don't protect articles just for the benefit of one editor. — It's dot com 21:25, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Putting unfinished signs on

I haven't finished one of my articles, and I've seen a lot of these box-things that say if an article isn't finished. As for mine, I haven't had much time to work on it, how do I put one of those boxes on there? (Dynamite 10:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC))

Type {{stub}}. Use {{sectionstub}} when it's just a section that's unfinished. Shwoo 11:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Problems

I can't edit the top part of some articles. Like the descriptions and all that, how can I fix one of those? Thnikky 03:26, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Rather than clicking "edit" in the article itself, scroll to the very top of the page and click it there. It's the third tab from the left. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 03:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Username question

Why does the HR wiki ask that usernames can't be directly named after Homestar Runner characters? Thanks! Thnikky Oh, sorry about all the questions. I'm just a little new to editing and everything (but I've been using hrwiki.org since 2005)

This is one of the oldest rules on the wiki. It's generally restricted to just the main characters. Besides the fact that using the name of a main character is unoriginal, it's too confusing to discuss the characters if users have the exact same names. — It's dot com 00:23, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Thank God it only applies to characters with, say, three or more appearances. Flashfight 01:51, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it applies only to the main 11. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:44, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
There are twelve, but that's not important Strong Vader00:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Images that are not upload'd....ed

I just realized this when I was last editing my userpage: If you can post on a user page (for example, an image from another website (like how users are posting 'personality quiz' answers (I have one of those on my user page) or 'trainer cards' (some users are posting customizable Pokemon trainer cards)) can we do that instead of posting personal images? (like if you wanted to post a picture of a singer you like...i dunno....like David Bowie for showing hobbies/interests)

If so, are we limited to two?

Is this going to be a long discussion about the rules and personal images?

If so, should we post anything about this on the Help:Images page?

Am I going to ask more questions?

Probably.

Thanks a lot, <Kermit1234> 04:23, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Nope, images linked to externally don't count as personal images, and aren't subject to any limits (except the rules of general decency). --DorianGray 04:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Aren't they also subject to the applicable copyright laws? — Defender1031*Talk 04:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Maybe? --DorianGray 04:28, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
I'd say of course. Don't steal bandwidth. If you choose to have ten images all hosted on your dime, I say fine. But do hold to the principles of fair use. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 08:58, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Making pages (here is how)

how do i make pages or subpages?

First, you must make a link to that page from another page. (like [/[good]/] while editing the page you want to link but without the slashes) The link should turn red. Hit the link.
Then all you have to do is hit the edit tab and start making your page.
Jorbs3210 23:23, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] System

You mean MediaWiki? — Defender1031*Talk 23:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
What's that?

[edit] Image

I need help loading this image onto my user page. How do you do it? Please upload it, and i'll put it on my page. Please?

If you don't have this image on your computer, the save it first. If you need any other help, try consulting our help pages. By the way, when you write something on a talk page, please end it with four tildes (~~~~) so it will add your username and a date, like so: Elcool (talk)(contribs) 23:46, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
One other thing: as this is going to be a personal image, be sure to include the personal image template - {{personal-image|Jorbs3210}}. That indicates it is not for the knowledge base, it is rather for personal use. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:24, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
The easiest way for you to put it on your user page is actually to not upload it to the wiki and just put the URL to the image on your user page: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/jorbs3210/Sad_mac.png That will make the image appear on your user page. Loafing 20:43, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Quit being user

How do you discontinue being a user on the wiki? - — hr.pngBubyman Lets chat 22:11, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Stop logging in, stop editing, and stop visiting the URL. That's the most tried-and-true method. --DorianGray 06:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
To follow up on the above answer, we almost never actually delete user accounts, so a user who wants to leave just becomes inactive. In general, it doesn't hurt to keep unused accounts on the books, and someone who's left might someday decide to become active again. — It's dot com 04:56, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Adding contents table to a page

I've tried to edit in a contents table for quick acces to sections of pages, but when I click on edit to see the code for such a thing, it's not there! Can someone help me figure out, or tell me, what the code is for tables of contents? Thanks in advance. MarioMaster2008 03:47, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

To add a table of contents to a page, add __TOC__ (note that there are two underscores before and after the code) to wherever you want the box to appear. If the page has less than three sections, use __FORCETOC__ to force the box to appear (it might not otherwise, I think). --DorianGray 05:59, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Bottom 10 styles

Can it be done?

Ok, so I noticed that like EVERYONE has a section on their userpage for their bottom ten. I have no idea how I could go about doing this, but is there a possible way someone could make a blockquote class for the screen the bottom ten comes up on in the e-mail bottom ten? I have no idea how to use mediawiki or anything, or else i'd try it myself. Anyone? Jelly? Grapity? - Opus the Penguin 23:18, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Here's an idea. Type on it in Paint using the font Glitch0 and type on it using the typing tool. I will provide a video for you in a few minutes. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 01:44, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Michael, i think you misunderstood the question. He's asking if the devs can set up a blockquote class to do it on-wiki. — Defender1031*Talk 01:48, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, I don't think it could be done like that, so I' giving him another option to choose from. If he doesn't like it, he can ask Dot com to make him a blockquote. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 01:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
It CAN be done like that, and that's EXACTLY what he's asking. Now why don't we stop and let the devs actually see this before it gets out of hand, rather than suggesting other things that are not what is being requested? — Defender1031*Talk 01:59, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Opus, watch this video and see if it's not what you want. If it isn't, I'll let the Developers handle it. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 02:02, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
I know it can be done, I just have no idea how. I was merely making a suggestion after noticing so many pages with a bottom 10 list (including mine). - Opus the Penguin 02:07, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Michael's suggestion actually seems pretty good. I might have to sacrifice one of my personal image slots and try it. Not as good as a blockquote, but I doubt the sysops would make one if it's only for personal use. —Guard Duck talk 02:31, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
If it were only a few users, then yes I would agree. But TONS of users have these lists on their pages. After all, the purpose of the email class blockquotes are purely aesthetic anyway, why not create a new one that many users could use and would enhance the user's page? -- Opus the Penguin 02:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

You mean kinda like this? You don't need a custom blockquote, or a personal image, just a div with some styles. — It's dot com 02:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

The intent of the personal-image rule is to keep people from uploading lots of images (especially ones that aren't related to the project) to decorate their pages. Since this image could serve many users (kind of like a userbox image), I think it serves the project and wouldn't need to be labeled as "belonging" to any particular user. Still, this is the kind of thing we'd want to watch that we didn't go overboard on. — It's dot com 03:13, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Where the crap is the fanstuff wiki?

This doesn't really have much to do with this particular wiki, but it is H*R/wiki-related. Anyways, where is the fanstuff wiki?? Religious Corn   18:32, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

I think the better question is, where the crap has Religious Corn been, because this question has been addressed many, many times. — It's dot com 19:38, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Could you at least let me use the old fanstuff wiki? I need somewhere to take my sbemails and art that I cranked out. --Fangoriously 20:53, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

No, the old wiki is archived. It doesn't exist in an editable state anymore. — It's dot com 19:44, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Can you still access the old wiki? If so, where is it? Religious Corn   23:20, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I can still access the old wiki in the sense that I can dig around in the database, but it is not Web-accessible. — It's dot com 01:10, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, we do. See HRWiki:Main Page Talk Archive 28#RSS Feed and HRWiki:Feeds. --DorianGray 04:13, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

I didn't find this article's upload section helpful... at all. Could someone give me a more detailed way to become upload approved and how to get the images both onto my computer and onto the wiki? --Jellote 11:02, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox templates

Is it really necessary for users to have those userbox templates located at {{User:JohnDoe/userbox}}? I quote from HRWiki:User Space: "Please do not abuse this privilege. Do not use component (nested) pages for content that could just as easily go on your main page. Can't those userbox codes just as easily go on the main userpage instead of having to be embedded in a user space template? And I know I have one at the moment of typing this, but I'm substing it for proof of comment. See if you can tell the difference in this and this. No difference, right? That just proves my point. Are they really hurting anything? This has been brought up before, without much discussion, but the points there are still valid.  Green Helmet 02:35, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Image Help

I need help. I'm trying to upload a new image for my signature. I upload my image, it has the right file type (PNG), I add a summary (the summary was "My signature"), I put the copyright box thing (I do not own the license), click Upload, BUT EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TIME, I GET THIS CRAP, The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! -Deesejaiman

[edit] Extensions

Does anyone know if the source code for the extensions "Cheatbot" and "Personalimages" are released? I was thinking about installing them on my wiki. Star Runner Home

It's The Cheatbot. Neither one has been released, nor are they likely to be anytime soon. (The Cheatbot is basically just a username to use for some custom back-end maintenance scripts wrapped in a Special page (although it could easily be a command-line function), and Personalimages was one of the very first things I wrote for this site and would need a lot of work before being released publicly.) — It's dot com 23:24, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Decompiling Flash files

I want to make a fan video about Sibbie...how do you download a Flash video from the site to decompile it in Flash?? Religious Corn   02:41, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

In the External Links section of each toon there is a direct link to the Flash file. Right-click on the link and then choose the option to save it to your computer. As for decompiling the file, I recommend Flash Decompiler Trillix by Eltima Software. It's not free, but there's a demo version if you want to try it out. — It's dot com 04:31, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] How do you put those boxes on your userpage?

Some of these people have these boxes with stuff like "this user is 13 years or older" or something like that. How do you get it?

Only registered users are allowed to have user pages. Once you've created an account, check out HRWiki:User space and HRWiki:Userboxes. Hope that helps. — Defender1031*Talk 02:32, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New page

How do you create a new page? I have an idea but I don't know how to make one. Help? doctorwho295 22 March 2010

The easiest way to do it is to search for the page you want to create. If it doesn't exist/redirects to another page, you'll see this:
There is no page titled "hogwash". You can create this page
Click the red link and you'll be taken to the editing panel. Write up the page, preview it, and save. It's that easy. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:05, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Changing a FAQ answer

If you'll look at the post above this one, I answered on how to create a new page. It's a different way that what we currently suggest, and I think my way is better, because you also search for the term you are about to create a page about, and with it have fewer steps (Just searching, instead of editing the whole sandbox). Therefore, I think we should change the FAQ. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:11, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Sure, why not. I rarely create a page using the redlink method, and only then when it branches off a real page, never from the sandbox. The way you suggest is probably the easiest method to put in the FAQ. It's not the method with the least amount of steps, though. That would be to go to http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Some new page and then click the create tab. — It's dot com 16:01, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Great :). And it's the easiest way if you're creating a page with spaces in the title or special marks (", ?, !, etc.) and don't want to be bothered with the correct code. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:53, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Spaces and special marks (except the question mark) usually aren't a problem with the quick method, at least not in my browser. I type them in like normal and it converts them to underscores or codes as necessary. — It's dot com 22:03, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] A new template

Alright, while I'm sure this doesn't belong here, I can't find any place else for it.

Is there a template for unanswered questions, such as the Talk template on the MarioWiki? I'm there too, and I like to answer unanswered questions that need to be answered but cannot be answered since nobody knows that they need to be answered. --Essence of Ghost Water 11:50, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Separate school account...?

I was wondering if it would be acceptable to make a account for at school, i.e. since my main account is LikeLakers2, (I'm not making this logged in for security reasons, since its from a shared school computer) I could name it LikeLakers2School, or maybe LL2School. One of the main security reasons is that, if I accidentally forget to logout of the school account, that a vandalism by someone other than me, using my account, would not be as likely to be charged against my main account. (might be finished later, feel free to respond as it is) LikeLakers2, via 204.122.254.23 15:45, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I really don't think that's necessary. When you log in, just never check the "Remember my login on this computer" box. That way all you have to do to log out is close your browser. Besides, we don't have much of a vandalism problem these days. Are there really that many enemies/morons around you that you think this would be an issue? — It's dot com 16:50, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Alternatively, you just edit anonymously while at school. Then there's no chance of someone getting on your main account. -132.183.151.97 17:15, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Can't Set Up an Account

I am trying to set up an account, but when I click the "log in" link in the upper right corner, the Login/ Sign Up page dosn't have a "create account" button. When I click on another link to the page, it says: "Permissions Errors You do not have permission to create this user account, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Bots, Administrators." Can someone help me sort this out? 76.182.207.195 00:53, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

A few days ago, there was a spam attack, so account creation was disabled. RickTommy (edits) 01:03, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
That's partially correct. A few days ago, we got finally tired of persistent spam accounts. We'll fully reenable account creation once we improve our spam prevention. — It's dot com 01:31, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] I can do a mean mocrophone impression, and can't seem to sign up for this telegram machine.

I want to have a sub-page of my userpage to have samples of my impressions of characters from Homestar Runner. I was just asking if it was OK, and another thing, I plan to showcase a lot more then two of impressions on that subpage of my userpage. It's something i've had in mind for a couple of days now. Also, I can't find the sign up area for the Wiki forums, and the Fanstuff Wiki. I want to sign up for at least the Forums, the Fanstuff, if i;m not mistaken, i've heard has some heavy cleanup and sorts going on, so editing is lacked right now, but I'm just curious. Please respond soon! --Camwoodstock 22:25, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

OK. The forum I can just send an e-mail. But, what about my first question? --Camwoodstock 15:37, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
I answered that. It's not okay to have that subpage. — It's dot com 15:47, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
