[edit] Is there a way to keep someone from editing my articles?

If there is, I'd like to know how. I wrote the article about Strong Bad changing the topic of his e-mails, and I liked it the way it was, but somebody changed all of it and I think it has less information. I also can't change it back. Is there a way to fix it or keep people from editing it? Thnikky

Well, you see, Thnikky, this is a wiki. Anyone can edit pretty much any article, and we don't protect articles just for the benefit of one editor. You can access the previous versions of a page using the history tab at the top. From there, you can get elements from old versions and combine them with the current version, or revert to an older version altogether (note, we don't usually revert big changes except in cases of vandalism; instead, we try to keep the best parts of all the versions). Hope that helps! — It's dot com 21:25, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Putting unfinished signs on

I haven't finished one of my articles, and I've seen a lot of these box-things that say if an article isn't finished. As for mine, I haven't had much time to work on it, how do I put one of those boxes on there? (Dynamite 10:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC))

Type {{stub}}. Use {{sectionstub}} when it's just a section that's unfinished. Shwoo 11:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Problems

I can't edit the top part of some articles. Like the descriptions and all that, how can I fix one of those? Thnikky 03:26, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Rather than clicking "edit" in the article itself, scroll to the very top of the page and click it there. It's the third tab from the left. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 03:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Username question

Why does the HR wiki ask that usernames can't be directly named after Homestar Runner characters? Thanks! Thnikky Oh, sorry about all the questions. I'm just a little new to editing and everything (but I've been using hrwiki.org since 2005)

This is one of the oldest rules on the wiki. It's generally restricted to just the main characters. Besides the fact that using the name of a main character is unoriginal, it's too confusing to discuss the characters if users have the exact same names. — It's dot com 00:23, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Thank God it only applies to characters with, say, three or more appearances. Flashfight 01:51, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it applies only to the main 11. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:44, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
There are twelve, but that's not important Strong Vader00:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Images that are not upload'd....ed

I just realized this when I was last editing my userpage: If you can post on a user page (for example, an image from another website (like how users are posting 'personality quiz' answers (I have one of those on my user page) or 'trainer cards' (some users are posting customizable Pokemon trainer cards)) can we do that instead of posting personal images? (like if you wanted to post a picture of a singer you like...i dunno....like David Bowie for showing hobbies/interests)

If so, are we limited to two?

Is this going to be a long discussion about the rules and personal images?

If so, should we post anything about this on the Help:Images page?

Am I going to ask more questions?

Probably.

Thanks a lot, <Kermit1234> 04:23, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Nope, images linked to externally don't count as personal images, and aren't subject to any limits (except the rules of general decency). --DorianGray 04:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Aren't they also subject to the applicable copyright laws? — Defender1031*Talk 04:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Maybe? --DorianGray 04:28, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
I'd say of course. Don't steal bandwidth. If you choose to have ten images all hosted on your dime, I say fine. But do hold to the principles of fair use. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 08:58, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Making pages (here is how)

how do i make pages or subpages?

First, you must make a link to that page from another page. (like [/[good]/] while editing the page you want to link but without the slashes) The link should turn red. Hit the link.
Then all you have to do is hit the edit tab and start making your page.
Jorbs3210 23:23, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] System

What system do you use for editing/making pages? I would really like to know. Jorbs3210 23:17, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

You mean MediaWiki? — Defender1031*Talk 23:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
What's that?

Copied from Help talk:Editing:

What system is used? Jorbs3210 23:12, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image

I need help loading this image onto my user page. How do you do it? Please upload it, and i'll put it on my page. Please?

If you don't have this image on your computer, the save it first. On the sidebar on the left side on any page on the wiki click on Upload File. Click on Browse and choose the file from the folder it's saved on. Please add a Summary and a Licensing and then click Upload. After a few seconds you will be directed to a new page with instructions on how to put this image in any page. On your user page click edit, and add the specified code at the place you want the image to appear. If you need any other help, try consulting our help pages. By the way, when you write something on a talk page, please end it with four tildes (~~~~) so it will add your username and a date, like so: Elcool (talk)(contribs) 23:46, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
One other thing: as this is going to be a personal image, be sure to include the personal image template - {{personal-image|Jorbs3210}}. That indicates it is not for the knowledge base, it is rather for personal use. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:24, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
The easiest way for you to put it on your user page is actually to not upload it to the wiki and just put the URL to the image on your user page: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/jorbs3210/Sad_mac.png That will make the image appear on your user page. Loafing 20:43, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] When Will Trogdor Be In A Movie?

Hi, my name is Peter and I was just wondering when will Trogdor or any body else from Homestar Runner be in a movie? If they already have please tell me.

From you biggest fan, Peter Richards

Trogdor appeared in free country USA once. SB--among others--has a pho-movie known as Dangeresque. Why not try lurking before coming here? ColdReactive
This is the FAQ for the wiki, not H*R.com. No one here can really answer that, you'd need to contact the Brothers Chaps. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:06, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox on other side

Is there a way to get an image or userbox to appear on the left side of the screen instead of the right side? Religious Corn   19:30, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes. Use a modified version of {{userboxtop}}, replacing "right" with "left" and vice versa. Edit this version of the Sandbox to see an example. — It's dot com 02:52, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Minor Edits

Note to social-remediation: What makes minor edits so minor? In other words, how do minor edits support the Wiki without actually showing changes or basic editing? -Ümläut76 (The C Zone · Talk here!) 10:26, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Have a look at the definition in our standards. Also, please don't start a talk page post with a star :) Loafing 20:40, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Quit being user

How do you discontinue being a user on the wiki? - — hr.pngBubyman Lets chat 22:11, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Stop logging in, stop editing, and stop visiting the URL. That's the most tried-and-true method. --DorianGray 06:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
To follow up on the above answer, we almost never actually delete user accounts, so a user who wants to leave just becomes inactive. In general, it doesn't hurt to keep unused accounts on the books, and someone who's left might someday decide to become active again. — It's dot com 04:56, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Adding contents table to a page

I've tried to edit in a contents table for quick acces to sections of pages, but when I click on edit to see the code for such a thing, it's not there! Can someone help me figure out, or tell me, what the code is for tables of contents? Thanks in advance. MarioMaster2008 03:47, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

To add a table of contents to a page, add __TOC__ (note that there are two underscores before and after the code) to wherever you want the box to appear. If the page has less than three sections, use __FORCETOC__ to force the box to appear (it might not otherwise, I think). --DorianGray 05:59, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, Dorian, for helping me fix up my contributions. MarioMaster2008 06:10, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Autoconfirming account

It said I have to autoconfirm my account before uploading anything. How do I do that? joshcalvin 20:13, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Wait a couple of days. AUTOconfirm means it does it automatically. Just be patient. — Defender1031*Talk 20:22, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Bottom 10 styles

Can it be done?

Ok, so I noticed that like EVERYONE has a section on their userpage for their bottom ten. I have no idea how I could go about doing this, but is there a possible way someone could make a blockquote class for the screen the bottom ten comes up on in the e-mail bottom ten? I have no idea how to use mediawiki or anything, or else i'd try it myself. Anyone? Jelly? Grapity? - Opus the Penguin 23:18, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Here's an idea. Type on it in Paint using the font Glitch0 and type on it using the typing tool. I will provide a video for you in a few minutes. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 01:44, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Michael, i think you misunderstood the question. He's asking if the devs can set up a blockquote class to do it on-wiki. — Defender1031*Talk 01:48, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, I don't think it could be done like that, so I' giving him another option to choose from. If he doesn't like it, he can ask Dot com to make him a blockquote. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 01:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
It CAN be done like that, and that's EXACTLY what he's asking. Now why don't we stop and let the devs actually see this before it gets out of hand, rather than suggesting other things that are not what is being requested? — Defender1031*Talk 01:59, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Opus, watch this video and see if it's not what you want. If it isn't, I'll let the Developers handle it. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 02:02, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
I know it can be done, I just have no idea how. I was merely making a suggestion after noticing so many pages with a bottom 10 list (including mine). - Opus the Penguin 02:07, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Michael's suggestion actually seems pretty good. I might have to sacrifice one of my personal image slots and try it. Not as good as a blockquote, but I doubt the sysops would make one if it's only for personal use. —Guard Duck talk 02:31, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
If it were only a few users, then yes I would agree. But TONS of users have these lists on their pages. After all, the purpose of the email class blockquotes are purely aesthetic anyway, why not create a new one that many users could use and would enhance the user's page? -- Opus the Penguin 02:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

You mean kinda like this? You don't need a custom blockquote, or a personal image, just a div with some styles. — It's dot com 02:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

The intent of the personal-image rule is to keep people from uploading lots of images (especially ones that aren't related to the project) to decorate their pages. Since this image could serve many users (kind of like a userbox image), I think it serves the project and wouldn't need to be labeled as "belonging" to any particular user. Still, this is the kind of thing we'd want to watch that we didn't go overboard on. — It's dot com 03:13, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox templates

Is it really necessary for users to have those userbox templates located at {{User:JohnDoe/userbox}}? I quote from HRWiki:User Space: "Please do not abuse this privilege. Do not use component (nested) pages for content that could just as easily go on your main page. Can't those userbox codes just as easily go on the main userpage instead of having to be embedded in a user space template? And I know I have one at the moment of typing this, but I'm substing it for proof of comment. See if you can tell the difference in this and this. No difference, right? That just proves my point. [edit] Extensions

Does anyone know if the source code for the extensions "Cheatbot" and "Personalimages" are released? I was thinking about installing them on my wiki. Star Runner Home

It's The Cheatbot. Neither one has been released, nor are they likely to be anytime soon. (The Cheatbot is basically just a username to use for some custom back-end maintenance scripts wrapped in a Special page (although it could easily be a command-line function), and Personalimages was one of the very first things I wrote for this site and would need a lot of work before being released publicly.) — It's dot com 23:24, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New page

How do you create a new page? I have an idea but I don't know how to make one. Help? doctorwho295 22 March 2010

The easiest way to do it is to search for the page you want to create. If it doesn't exist/redirects to another page, you'll see this:
There is no page titled "hogwash". You can create this page
Click the red link and you'll be taken to the editing panel. Write up the page, preview it, and save. It's that easy. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:05, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Changing a FAQ answer

If you'll look at the post above this one, I answered on how to create a new page. It's a different way that what we currently suggest, and I think my way is better, because you also search for the term you are about to create a page about, and with it have fewer steps (Just searching, instead of editing the whole sandbox). Therefore, I think we should change the FAQ. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 06:11, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Sure, why not. I rarely create a page using the redlink method, and only then when it branches off a real page, never from the sandbox. The way you suggest is probably the easiest method to put in the FAQ. It's not the method with the least amount of steps, though. That would be to go to http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/Some new page and then click the create tab. — It's dot com 16:01, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Great :). And it's the easiest way if you're creating a page with spaces in the title or special marks (", ?, !, etc.) and don't want to be bothered with the correct code. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 20:53, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Spaces and special marks (except the question mark) usually aren't a problem with the quick method, at least not in my browser. I type them in like normal and it converts them to underscores or codes as necessary. — It's dot com 22:03, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] A new template

Alright, while I'm sure this doesn't belong here, I can't find any place else for it.

Is there a template for unanswered questions, such as the Talk template on the MarioWiki? I'm there too, and I like to answer unanswered questions that need to be answered but cannot be answered since nobody knows that they need to be answered. --Essence of Ghost Water 11:50, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Separate school account...?

I was wondering if it would be acceptable to make a account for at school, i.e. since my main account is LikeLakers2, (I'm not making this logged in for security reasons, since its from a shared school computer) I could name it LikeLakers2School, or maybe LL2School. One of the main security reasons is that, if I accidentally forget to logout of the school account, that a vandalism by someone other than me, using my account, would not be as likely to be charged against my main account. (might be finished later, feel free to respond as it is) LikeLakers2, via 204.122.254.23 15:45, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I really don't think that's necessary. When you log in, just never check the "Remember my login on this computer" box. That way all you have to do to log out is close your browser. Besides, we don't have much of a vandalism problem these days. Are there really that many enemies/morons around you that you think this would be an issue? — It's dot com 16:50, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Alternatively, you just edit anonymously while at school. Then there's no chance of someone getting on your main account. -132.183.151.97 17:15, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Can someone help me sort this out? 76.182.207.195 00:53, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

A few days ago, there was a spam attack, so account creation was disabled. RickTommy (edits) 01:03, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
That's partially correct. A few days ago, we got finally tired of persistent spam accounts. We'll fully reenable account creation once we improve our spam prevention. — It's dot com 01:31, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] I can do a mean mocrophone impression, and can't seem to sign up for this telegram machine.

I want to have a sub-page of my userpage to have samples of my impressions of characters from Homestar Runner. I was just asking if it was OK, and another thing, I plan to showcase a lot more then two of impressions on that subpage of my userpage. It's something i've had in mind for a couple of days now. Also, I can't find the sign up area for the Wiki forums, and the Fanstuff Wiki. I want to sign up for at least the Forums, the Fanstuff, if i;m not mistaken, i've heard has some heavy cleanup and sorts going on, so editing is lacked right now, but I'm just curious. Please respond soon! --Camwoodstock 22:25, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

The Fanstuff Wiki is closed, probably forever. We don't accept fanstuff here on the knowledge base. You'll need to find somewhere else to host it, sorry. If you want a forum account, send us an email and we can set that up for you. — It's dot com 02:34, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
OK. The forum I can just send an e-mail. But, what about my first question? --Camwoodstock 15:37, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
I answered that. It's not okay to have that subpage. — It's dot com 15:47, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
OK then. I'm gonna have to look for where, which that's my own issue then... --Camwoodstock 20:21, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

[edit] Capitalization

On an article, why is each letter of the title and section titles capitalized? --88.226.133.92 14:34, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

It's called Title Case and it's generally used in English for any sort of title. — Defender1031*Talk 14:48, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
