[edit] Icons 2

I was just curious about icons. Is it possible to have icons to go along with our names like on You Tube or Habbo Hotel or something? I just thought that would be pretty cool, I've always wanted to have one of those. Thanks for reading my message!

-Nick

I'd like to have an icon saying "Holy Crap" in my signature... hey, wait! I do! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:02, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

To answer the question, see this page. Be forewarned; there's a limit to how large you can make the image. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:10, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

I have tried to cut and paste an image to make a signature, but when I paste in the "signature" box, it just creates a space. Please help me here.

Dripping yella 16:14, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

You don't just "cut and paste" it, you have to upload it here before putting the text on your signature line. (P.S. it can also be .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG, or even .BMP, although that last one is highly unrecomended) Then put your username before it, save the page, and insert wherever you want it to appear. —Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif

[edit] Little box things

How do you get those little box things that are on everyones pages that say stuff like "This user has a hstarr T-shirt"?

See HRWiki:Userbox. — It's dot com 16:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New content RSS

I've written a Flash scraper in Perl that detects new content added to homestarrunner.com. It runs each day at 6:50 AM America/Chicago time and creates an RSS feed that I post to my website. Would this be a valuable addition to hrwiki.org? If so, where would be a good place to post it? http://www.chrisdolan.net/homestarrunner/hsr.rss ChrisDolan 14:45, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, Chris, but a once-a-day automatic check is unnecessary given the hundreds of users and anonnies from a vast number of time zones who check each day and post here what they find. — It's dot com 16:18, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I meant FOR the users, not for HRWiki. I use that feed to tell me when new content is on homestarrunner.com so I don't have to go there manually or go to hrwiki.org manually. Does hrwiki.org have a feed I can subscribe to that has links to any new content? ChrisDolan 21:26, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
There's this feed, provided and hosted by theblackforge.net. More information can be found in this livejournal post, the livejournal feed page, and the livejournal feed info page. For feeds provided by the wiki itself, see HRWiki:Feeds. -- Tom 22:30, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Summary editing

I made my first contribution (oooh, how exciting!) but forgot to put something in the summary box, is there a way i can still add a summary to explain the contribution i made? I tried to go back and leave a Summary (without editing anything else) but it didn't work. Thanks in advance. — Adaman (Talk | contribs) 15:43, 29 October 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Nope, there's no way to change the edit summary of a past edit. What you did is pretty much the standard if you want to clarify a summary... just make another minor edit and put the summary there. You have to make some change... if the wiki text is exactly the same, it won't save... just adding or removing a space somewhere is enough if you can't find some minor punctuation to fix (see Meta:Help:Dummy_edit). If you want, there is an option in your preferences, at the bottom of the "Editing" section, that'll warn you if you're about to save an edit without a summary. --phlip TC 16:42, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Summaries

I feel stupid asking this, but how do I get the arrows in the edit summary that link to the part of the article I just edited? I looked around, but I couldn't see it mentioned anywhere. Shwoo 12:32, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Do this: /* (Header) */ (Edit Summary). Replace "(Header)" with the header, and "(Edit summary)" with your edit summary. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, as 213.249.155.240 (not logged in), 12:57, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
If you click the "edit" link next to a header, it'll automatically fill in the /* Header */ bit. --phlip TC 13:01, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! Shwoo 00:26, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] downloads

are downloads free?? — 69.40.157.27 (Talk | contribs) 15:41, 4 November 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Nope. Please make checks payable to: It's dot com, c/o Homestar Runner Wiki. Seriously, what are you talking about? — It's dot com 20:18, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
He's clearly referring to the underground wares server we have running. Just let me show him around back.... — Lapper (talk) 19:03, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] custom nav?

I've been wanting to add some custom navigation links for things I frequently go to on the wiki. I understand in theory how I would do this, and I'm sure if I sat down for a few hours someday I could set it up with a custom monobook.cs and monobook.js to insert what I want and style it appropriately.

But I'd rather not re-invent the wheel. I can see (mostly from looking at the "admin" style customizations on the wikipedia) many examples, but there doesn't seem to be any documentation. (It's all "look at the source luke!"-style documentation).

Any pointers? (That don't involve digging through spaghetti to try and reverse engineer?)

Perhaps the watchlist would be a good start...? --DorianGray
Or possibly Help:Quickbar? — Lapper (talk) 14:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Personal Logo Change

I was reading the talk page for Logo Redesign 2006 and I read that it's possible to make the logo look like what you want and it will only for your account. If it's possible how would I do it? - Flamer(talk) 06:00, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Add this to your monobook.css file:

#p-logo a { background: url(http://www.hrwiki.org/images/thumb/c/c9/Homestarpedia.png/146px-Homestarpedia.png) 35% 50% no-repeat !important; }

Replace "http://www.hrwiki.org/images/thumb/c/c9/Homestarpedia.png/146px-Homestarpedia.png" with the URL of the logo you want to use. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 06:36, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Speaking of which, how do you get it to alternate between logos?--H*Bad 00:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dag, yo! That'sa pretty nice!

Hey, check out the Cast section for A Decemberween Pageant... Discussion moved to HRWiki talk:Standards → Cast list formatting.

[edit] How to get an icon or catch phrase.

I sometimes see users at the forum have catch phrases or icons. How do I get one for myself?

These are easily changed under your Profile on the forum (though you need a separate account there). --DorianGray
That would actually be a question for the Forum; this is pretty much an entirely separate community. In any case, I see this must be your first time on an Internet forum (or at least phpBB). The "catch phrases" (signatures), and "icons" (avatars) can both be set in your preferences, accessible at the top of the page. — Lapper (talk) 00:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pictures (Yes, I am new here)

How to people get great pictues to upload? Do they pause the flash file? And if so, how do they capture the picure?

There should be a "Print Screen" button on your keyboard next to insert, scroll lock, home, and the like. Press that button, paste it on a program, and upload it. That button takes a screenshot of your computer screen. TheYellowDart(t/c)
See also Help:Image. --DorianGray

I have tried to press print screen (Prt Sc) several times on the flash file and at a page for a test. Neither worked. What gives?

That just pastes it to the clipboard. Did you try pasting it into an image editing program? - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 23:59, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, it worked but now... my picture is a bmp. How do I avoid this?

Under save as, select "PNG" under the "Save as type" menu. Also, remember to sign your username with four tildes (~~~~). - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 17:18, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I can't find the Print Screen button. Are they on Mac keyboards? ~16_BIT_MARIO1 23:34, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

For a Mac, you probably want to use the "Grab" application (in Applications/Utilities on my computer) to take screenshots — there is no Print Screen key. Let me know if that doesn't help. Trey56 23:36, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
It worked, thanks.~16_BIT_MARIO1 23:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Great! Also, I looked at Wikipedia:Screenshot#Mac OS X, and it turns out that you can use Command+Shift+3 to take a screenshot without the Grab application. Trey56 23:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook Change Background

Can you change the background for yourself in your monobook and if so how? - Austio talk 00:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Oh, look here It explaines how to change the logo, background and another thing I havn't tested yet.--X66x66 00:16, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The userpages

People have these little boxes on thier userpages that say things like "this user is right handed" or "the cheat is this users favorite character" how do i get these? And also how do you get the little pictures of things on your name? — Fhqwgad (Talk | contribs) 15:06, 28 January 2007 (UTC) (left unsigned)

The little boxes are userboxes, follow that link for more info. And the signature images are explained pretty fully at Help:Signature. Read those and feel free to ask any questions on those articles' talk pages. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:11, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Homepage & Talk

What things should I put in my homepage? Also, how do I put a "talk" icon over my signature? Dripping yella 16:11, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

See Help:Signature. And, you could make some userboxes! TheYellowDart(t/c) 16:14, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
That worked like a charm. I was just wondering how to make the talk text above (as well as to the right of) my signature like "the joe" does. Dripping yella (talk) 19:38, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
That's clever use of the tags. --DorianGray
w00t! That works great. One last thing: I found how to add color to my signature on the help:signature page, I just don't know how to fill it it for my own signature (particularly hexcode, font-family, font, and Username. I hope you can help out! Dripping yella (talk) 20:16, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Dunno how to help ya there, sorry. Also, don't forget the closing tag. --DorianGray
Can someone ask "the yellow dart" about this? He seems to have it down. Dripping yella (talk) 20:40, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
 • Here, let me paste parts of my signature down, so you can learn off of that... <span style="font-family:Courier New; color:darkorange">TheYellowDart</span>. enter your username, find a font (mine was Courier New), and put a color down (like darkorange). TheYellowDart(t/c) 21:47, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

That, my friend, is jumbo/large. Drippingyellowmadness (talk)

 • Ouch, your sig hurts my eyes. Try a darker color. I mean, my name has "yellow" in it, but I picked orange! TheYellowDart(t/c) 22:19, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

How is this?: Drippingyellowmadness (talk) Also, where do I insert (talk) if i want to add color to my talk icon?

Looks grood. Okay, take Bubsty's sig for example: <small><font color="#0000FF">My</font> <font color="#FFCC00">talk</font></small>, but of course, that's changing it into two colors. --TheYellowDart(t/c) 22:58, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I swear that this is my LAST QUESTION ON THIS TOPIC!!! how do I put my signature code in my signature box so that when I type 3 or 4 tidles, Drippingyellowmadness (talk) comes up. So far I have just copied and pasted the sig code onto the FAQs page. Drippingyellowmadness (talk)

 • Okay, I fixed it for you. Now, all you have to type in is and there you go. Don't worry, you can ask all the questions you want. I'm glad to help you. TheYellowDart(t/c) 23:17, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Recuit

hey everybody! My name is hrfreak. I'm looking very forward to posting new pages! So, there you go!

hrfreak!

Hi, hrfreak! I appreciate your eagerness. Be aware that what we need more than new pages is maintenance and update of current pages. If you really want to contribute, I recommend you read all the documents found through the Help link at the top left. Observe the more prolific editors and see what they do right and what they don't do right. And as someone wisely said, "Whenever I do something, I think 'Would an idiot do that?' and if they would, I do not do that thing." :) Look for opportunities to help which are really helpful, and don't be so eager that you do unnecessary things. And by all means, have fun exploring the resource; after all, that's the main reason why we're here. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:50, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to get a gif

This is the screen I get.
This is what I get after pressing open.

I may never use it in my life, but I was curious on how to get a gif and if it is possible to get a gif off of a screenshot. Thanks, Drippingyellowmadness CoolS.png talk 21:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

GIF is just an image file format, most every image editing program (even MSPaint) can save to GIF, but we tend not to prefer it on the wiki, as PNG is a far-superior format. Unless of course you're talking about animated GIFs, which are a whole different beast entirely. You can't make an animated GIF from "a screenshot", since the screenshot loses all the animation... you'd have to take lots of screenshots, one for each frame, and then manipulate them in some program that'll create the GIF for you... which is rarely worth the effort. But since you're curious, The_GIMP is a free image-editing program that's capable of making animated GIFs... just put each frame on its own layer, and save to GIF – you'll have the option of making it an animation. There's other things available, like optimisation and such, but that's the basics. --phlip TC 01:43, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
What sort of file should I open GIMP under? Give some examples please. I'm not too deep into computer filenames. Drippingyellowmadness CoolS.png talk 18:53, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Just download the installer then run it. It really shouldn't matter what you name it, because it'll put the GIMP files in the same place when it installs. - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 03:31, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Run what and where? When I finish downloading GIMP, I get this screen: (first image at the right). Upon pressing open or save, I get this screen: (second image at the right).
You need an extracting program, such as 7-Zip. Open the ZIP file in 7-Zip, and then run the GIMP EXE file. It's a standard installer from there. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif 14:00, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Subpages

I want to make a Work-in-Progress page. How can I go about doing that? ——Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif

Append "/anything" to your userpage and start editing. — Lapper (talk) 21:25, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
What do you mean; please explain. ——Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif
Like, my sig (User:Bluebry/sig) is a subpage. Just make a page titled User:Supuhstar/, and then whatever you want the subpage title to be behind the backslash forward slash. Bluebry 21:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Okay! Thanks! Still on my favorate users list! ——Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif
(That's a forward slash, by the way. The distinction is important, because a forward slash will create a subpage, but a backslash will not.) — It's dot com 21:43, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cool Formating

I love the kind of formatting that's in Lapper's page, but don't know how to do it right; it just keeps backfiring on me. can anyone help? ——Supuhstar* Image:Supuhstar(SupuhSmall).gif

You'll learn very, very quickly that copy-and-pasting CSS is one of the easiest ways to have to do as much work as possible. This is especially true when you neglect to close multiple tags, as visible on that page. — Lapper (talk) 15:30, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Need a new password, but can't get it

I'm trying to log in, but I've forgotten my password. Since I didn't enter an email address, the site won't send me a new password. What should I do?

I'm afraid there's nothing you can do, since you didn't enter an email address — there's no way for administrators to access your password information. Keep trying to enter different possible passwords, but if that doesn't work, you're welcome to create a new account. I hope that helps, but I'm sorry we're not able to do more. Trey56 21:00, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Personal images

Why can't we have more than two personal images? I mean, it's not like they're dangerous or anything, unless they have virus' attached to them. Maybe you should think about virus protection on this site.

We limit to two personal images because (a) it's a good solid number; you shouldn't need any more, and (b) to conserve space and transfer that might be squandered on too many personal images. — Lapper (talk) 15:28, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Background images

how do i get a background on my user page?Haddiman

A while ago a line of code was removed that allowed <div> to have inline backgrounds. Just create a <div> that encompasses your entire page, and attach background properties to that. — Lapper (talk) 15:26, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Navbar

I made a navigation bar I'm gunna put on my user page (here), but it doesn't look really good yet. Could you make the spaces between the links so it looks a bit better? Homestar-Winner (talk) 22:34, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

You can make spaces by using &nsp; and you could also put | between them for better distinction. Loafing 22:36, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
That doesn't work. Homestar-Winner (talk) 23:00, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Probably because he meant &nbsp;. — It's dot com 23:23, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Alla this

Can someone please tell me how to do alla this? I just signed up and I don't know how to do anything on here. --Rosie posie 01:20, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Rosie Posie

What exactly would you like help with? Perhaps a good place to start would be at HRWiki:Introduction, but if you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to the wiki! Trey56 01:26, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Signature

Make it as SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE for me to understand this: How do you add stuff to your signature? I saw all of that mumbo jombo on the signature page, but I don't understand it.--Brad 14:27, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New page

Can someone help me make a page?

For the most part, we don't need as many new pages as we do contributions to existing ones. Many new pages are often on an insignificant subject matter or are otherwise pooly made, and when put up for deletion, often cause feelings to be hurt. We're glad to have you willing to contribute, but try working your way around the wiki for a while before deciding to create a new page. — Lapper (talk) 16:07, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
He asked for help in making a page, not whether he should do it. I don't imagine someone who is seeking technical information (that is otherwise freely available) would appreciate those who have the information withholding it from him simply because they don't think he will use it properly.
Topazian: To create a page, a simple way to do it is to type the exact page title you want into the search field at the left (including the namespace, if applicable) and press Enter. Assuming the page does not already exist, the system will inform you of this fact and provide a red link for you to create the page. Click on the link and you will be given an editing window. Enter your content, and then preview and save the page. When choosing a page title, pay attention to things like proper capitalization and spelling. If you're creating an article, be sure you read our standards and inclusion guidelines before doing any significant editing, and be sure to search the site to make sure that the topic is not already covered under a different title. If the community decides the page is needed then they will add to and improve it; otherwise, it might be merged with another article or removed. — It's dot com 19:05, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Dot com, i noticed an oversight in the autopipe that involves the instructions you just gave. I have no way to create the page "goat", short of creating it elsewhere and then moving it. Is there a way to fix this? (or some option i overlooked that does make it possible?) — Defender1031*Talk 19:10, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
It's still possible. You can for example change the URL to "goat". That page will autoredirect you to Goats where you can click on "redirected from goat" to create the page. Loafing 19:17, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Yes. See HRWiki:Autopipe/Autoredirect. — It's dot com 19:24, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
