[edit] Spooky sound effect

I've tried a couple times to remove a fact about a "spooky sound effect" coming from myths & legends; each time it's either been added back or I've been reverted. I assume the effect we're talking about is the one that sounds after Strong Bad says the fridge is a source of unspeakable power; if so, that sound also occurs in bottom 10 and possibly other places. Therefore, I'll remove this item from the page unless someone has a reason why my info is wrong. Heimstern Läufer 02:42, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't remember it in bottom 10 offhand. Will check when I put my dinner in the oven. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:45, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Edit conflict: Well I'm not sure sure how the best way to resolve this is, because if what you say is true, then the bottom 10 noise is the same as the myths & legends noise (which if my memory serves me right was "noted" to be in the same scale as the Geddup Noise or something strange like that). It should be somewhere in the Sound Effects page for sure. --Stux 02:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
It is not the same sound as in bottom 10. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:48, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Second that. You are thinking of the sound that occurs when strong bad sees the 'creepy painting'; it's lower and has a constant pitch, rather than the myths & legends sound effect, which starts at a higher note and goes to a lower note. It's the only appearance of that sound, so I think the reference should stand. By the way, is that sound anything else when sped up? Eman
Are the two sounds really that different? Yes, one has an additional note, but surely that doesn't make it a completely different sound effect. Oh, and I have absolute pitch and can tell you that the one in bottom 10 most certainly does is not a lower pitch. They are both a C. Anyway, it's not a huge deal, but I really think this is the sort of thing that should only be noted on the Sound Effects page. Anyone else agree? Heimstern Läufer 03:29, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Now that I actually listened to bottom 10, I'm going with Heimstern. They sound the same to me, and even if they're not exactly the same, they are close eough to be noted somewheres. Has Matt? (talk) 13:21, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Did you really ask if two things being different really makes them different? They're clearly not the same sound effect. The pop-up sound is the same as in myths and legends; the bottom 10 sound is a pulsing single pitch that is different from all notes in the pop-up/legends effect. --Sarducci
I disagree. The sounds in both emails are almost identical - the sound in bottom 10 is equivalent to the sound in myths & legends played just after the first note. If you want, I can put the two sounds side by side and overlapped in an OGG file to help prove this. The quality of the sounds may be a little different between the two emails, but the instrument used to make both of them is the same. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:12, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
First of all, I'll "chime" in and assert that this is, in fact, the same sound effect as the one that was overused in myths & legends, but this time it is played at a slower rate. It is nothing like the sound used in bottom 10 when Strong Bad slowly slides open the closet to reveal the horrible painting. (Heimstern, that is the sound you meant, right?) That sound was simply a rumble with no articulation. This one has distinct wooden strikes and reverb. However, there is an edit comment by It's dot com implying that this would be appropriate only for the Sound Effects page (where it is already noted), since it is a "re-use" rather than a "reference". Can someone second that protocol and convince us that this is not a reference? (Not that I particularly think it is. Just playing devil's advocate.) --TheNicestGuy 20:32, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I agree completely that this is a reuse, not a reference. I was about to post that when you beat me to it, The Nicest Guy. By the way, try listening a little more carefully to the bottom 10 sound; I hear all those "wooden strikes" in that sound too (I'm assuming you're talking about that faint, loosely cowbell-like sound?). At any rate, it's currently off the page and documented on sound effects, which is exactly right, IMO, so I guess it's all taken care of now. Heimstern Läufer 21:18, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I was wrong; it is still there. I'm going to STUFF if it later if no one removes or STUFFs it first. Heimstern Läufer 21:21, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Just for reference: Listen to both "Spooky Musics". The first one is from this email (and was overused in myths & legends), and the second one is from bottom 10. The sound in bottom 10 becomes kinda indistinct because there's also the sound of the sliding/rolling door overlaid on the "spooky music". But listen closely - you'll hear the same harmonics and wood tones in both sounds - the bottom 10 version is missing the first note hit that m&l and pop-up have. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:23, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Even so, it's already been removed from the page and we can all agree that the first note is not heard in bottom 10, meaning that it's not exactly the same. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:29, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, okay, it's not been removed. Or if it was, it was re-added. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I removed it and put in a comment to horpfully prevent people from re-adding it again. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:33, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Hopefully this solves our problem. And yes, I do and did realise that there's an additional note in the pop-up sound effect. I realised after my last post that I'm thinking about these sound effects the way a music theorist would, which is not necessarily the most useful thinking for sound effects. ("They have the same Schenkerian structure, right?") To anyone who understood that, you have my deepest sympathy. ;-) All to say that I now understand why they are being understood as two different sound effects, despite their similarity. Heimstern Läufer 23:55, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I seriously think it should be mentioned on the page. Come on, think about it seriously: the only other time the sound has been used is in the email directly previous to this email. Both uses times it refers to something mysterious. That's pretty obviously the point of the gag. Qduk 15:40, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] cheat talk

i know that it has been decided to not try to 'translate' the cheat talk for the transcript. however, i believe the top of the discussion page could be reserved for such speculative things as this, as well as narrowly outvoted or slightly dodgy STUFFs'es. cause it really sounds to me that the cheat says "yeah man" or "yes sir" when strong bad tells him to go win a car. also, sry for bumping the top topic, move this if you want, but i thought it was important. csours 03:45, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm surprised there was no reference to pie in this e-mail. It's been referenced in, what... the last four e-mails? -YK 01:57, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
We can use this as a checklist, if necessary. Once you've added pop-up to the gag's page, you can check it off here, yeah? --DorianGray

[edit] Name

Hey, I decided to move this page to pop-up book (with a description) before everyone and their brother decided to edit it, but Bazooka Joe moved it back without any edit desc. So, pop-up, or pop-up book? - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

"pop-up" is the official name on the email menu. — Kilroy / talk 02:04, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Senor Who?

Who is that Senor Woodweno on the kick The Cheat Page of the pop-up book? Have we seen him before? I've searched the wiki, but nothing else on him came up. Homsarhair (talk · edits) 03:20, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Never been named before, but he's in an Easter egg in lackey. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:22, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Does he need his own character page now, or is there not enough information. I'm new, and not sure. Homsarhair (talk · edits) 03:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
We don't even know the proper spelling of his name, actually. "Woodweno" was my best guess. I don't think he's yet deserving of a page, personally, but others may disagree. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:35, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I was just about to suggest that myself... --DorianGray

I was positive is was Muy Bueno. That whole page is rather Mexican. SaltyTalk! 04:04, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

It makes sense, but I'm not exactly hearing "Muy Bueno" (cue everyone and their brother insisting that it's "Muy Bueno" now... though I have no attachment to "Woodweno" at all.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 04:05, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I think I saw him in an DVD bonus thing, I think it was the sketchbook? Yeah, because they were talking about barely Strong Bad's. Can anyone check if this is true? I would, but I'm going to bed. DBK! 05:02, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Going to bed? At 9:00?! (I love Pacific time!!!) Anyway, no such character is seen in the Sketchbook video. It's already been stated that he appeared in lackey. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:20, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Negative Zero?

it seems to me that the negative zero is not a refrence to stinkoman but to the idea of the temperature being below zero, or that there's no such thing as positive or negative when it comes to zero.

I don't really get what you're saying. There was a "Level -0" in Stinkoman, and, as you say, there's not such a thing as a negative zero. I think it's a valid reference. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:48, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Also, there is a brand of refrigerators called subzero that is extremely popular with yuppies and other similar people who spend way too much on their houses.

See the article on wikipedia" -0 207.7.187.135 01:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
While the concept exists, I think -0 is far too esoteric to be a likely candidate for a reference in H*R. Counterarguments are encouraged. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:15, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] car no longer true?

Since The Cheat did end up winning Strong Bad a car, would that mean that car is now, for the most part, no longer correct? Or is this just more proof that any idea I have after about midnight is most likely wrong and best left unmentioned? (I'm referring to a few from around Christmas break.) — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 06:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Who knows if it was a car key? It didn't specifically say, did it? --DorianGray
Well, Strong Bad did tell Teh C. to win him a car... Heimstern Läufer 06:33, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
It's true that he would have a car now, but it was still true when car came out. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:33, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
The whole question of cars in Free Country is a bit ambiguous to say the least. We've seen Strong Bad in the Gremin in Dangeresque (A gremlin which was seemingly originally made up by Bubs I might add), yet Strong Bad says he doesn't own a car. I think the whole question of cars in Free Country USA is yet to be fully answered. If there was a simple answer, Bubs owned the Gremlin, incorperated it into his Halloween tale, loaned it to Strong Bad while making his movie, and ultimately lost it to his lackey today in a high stakes game of dominoes. [edit] The Magic Eye image

Google finds a couple of matching images if you search for "Magic Eye Saturn", however the one at this blog is the only one that is the same resolution as the one I pulled from the swf. I downloaded it, and it is bit-for-bit identical to the one in the toon - thus either TBC got it from this site, or they both got it (indirectly) from the same location elsewhere (from a site either not listed on Google Images or that doesn't call it "Saturn"). If it's the former, it begs the question: What were TBC doing on an alien conspiracy site? --phlip TC 06:34, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Searching for "Stereogram Saturn" finds this also, but though it's the same resolution, it's not bit-for-bit the same. So while it's the same picture, TBC didn't get it from here. --phlip TC 06:38, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Found a third version, on the official Magic Eye site, still not the same image that TBC used, but it tells me what book all three of these were scanned from, which is what I embarked on this to discover. --phlip TC 06:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
That 3-D picture does not look like Saturn, at all. It must be a made-up, "spacey" picture. Saturn's rings have more breadth and do not come as close to the planet. I have changed the note on the article to say, "a ringed planet" rather than "Saturn". Eman
Thing is, from what I can tell from the official site, it's actually called "Saturn" in the book (the filename is saturn.html and it says "Saturn" in the title). Hence why I made it say Saturn in the fact. I know it doesn't look exactly like Saturn, but that's what it's supposed to be, not just some random ringéd planet. Of course it is a made-up picture, I know of very few actual stereosopic pictures of the planets, but that doesn't make it any less worthy to be called Saturn, than for example this is... --phlip TC 00:05, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Charibs

Charibs seem to be the thing this week for internet culture. Penny arcade have a couple flying babies in relatively the same position. XD

Don't you love it when there are set trends on the internet XDSargeAbernathy 08:56, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't you mean 'cherubs?' I think that's how they're supposed to be spelt. --Zimmy 11:24, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Singular cherub, plural cherubim or cherubs, depending on which sense is meant. The traditional biblical or medieval angels would be properly called cherubim, while the more modern baby angel representations that are actually based on classical depictions of Eros/Cupid would be cherubs. No, no need to thank me. Just doing my job. Er... Just avoiding doing my job. --TheNicestGuy 17:54, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Some this might interest: the word cherub derives from Hebrew (kruv - The letter Kaf can be ch or k and the letter Beit can be b or v). The plural cherubim (kruvim) is with the Hebrew suffix for more then one male. Each word in Hebrew can be either male or female with defferent plural suffixes for each. Is it just me, or are the two saws sticking out of the Homestar Runner a reference to "Saw 2"? -- Leak

[edit] Well, which is it?

“The label "Negative Zero" on the fridge is likely a reference to the [Subzero] brand of refrigerator.” Or “The label "Negative Zero" on the fridge may be a reference to level -0 in Stinkoman 20X6.” They can't both be referenced, can they? --אוקאלייליי (Ookelaylay)

Sure they can. I think it's perfectly plausible that TBC would sieze the opportunity to parody an existing brand name and make an in-joke at the same time. --TheNicestGuy 20:38, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I realize that, but... one has "likely" (a no-no word) and the other has "may be" (another no-no word). --אוקאלייליי (Ookelaylay)
If you want to edit the language to match, or pick one place to merge both references (probably a controversial choice), go right ahead. But I'm pretty firmly against the idea that "likely" and "may be" are automatically no-no words for references. (Yes, I realize the Standards page does say something to that effect.) Just because we can't absolutely guarantee that what looks like a reference is not just an amusing coincidence is no reason not to mention it as "likely", "may be", "possible", etc., with links to the information to allow the reader to make up their own mind. But I would hesitate to pass either of these off as definite intentional references, because I'm neither a Chapman nor a mind-reader. --TheNicestGuy 21:25, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Senor or Señor?

I'm not hearing the "ñ" in "Señor" Whatshisface. It sounds to me like he's saying "Senor" the same way he says "Senor Cardgage". Thoughts? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:00, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

My thought is that you're right on the money, and that makes this worthy of its own page in the Running Gags Category. (What to call that page is debatable, since there is already a Senor which redirects to Señor, the obsolete storybook character.) I don't have time to do it myself right now, so if someone wants to beat me to it, knock yourself out. It should also be included on the Foreign words page. --TheNicestGuy 21:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I disagree that "Senor" needs its own running gag page. It's not all that notable that the characters mispronounce "Señor". Also, resolving "Senor" and "Señor" disambiguation would be kinda difficult. I think we should leave it at notes on Foreign Words and Strong Bad's Spelling. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 23:38, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
I still think it's a Running Gag. Look at the evolution from Strong Bad's mispronunciation and misspelling, to the "adoption" of that standard in Senor Mortgage and others, to the genesis of Senorial Day (an in-joke making fun of an in-joke), to the exporting of the trend to a completely different character. The mispronunciation is made particularly notable by the fact that Strong Sad originally pronounced Cardgage's name as "Señor", and Strong Bad himself correctly pronounced Señor in origins. But I'm too lazy to work out the difficulties of creating the new page, so I just wrote an essay on the Foreign words page. My fact checking was not exhaustive, so I invite one and all to verify it. As long as I never have to type ñ again. --TheNicestGuy 16:33, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Haven't had a chance to read your essay yet, but I'm thinking it through now, and here's how I think the disambig could work:

Senor: This article is about the misuse of a Spanish word. For the original storybook character, see Señor. For the mortgage broker/salesman, see Senor Cardgage.
Señor: This article is about the original storybook character. For the mortgage broker/salesman, see Senor Cardgage. For the running gag on the misuse of a Spanish word, see Senor.
Senor Cardgage: This article is about the mortgage broker/salesman. For the original storybook character, see Señor. For the running gag on the misuse of a Spanish word, see Senor.

This would resolve the redirects, methinks. What do you think? — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:40, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gold Circle Award

I removed a Fact that the Gold Circle Award is a real award given to trade publications for two reasons: No reference was given, and there seem to be a number of real life awards with this name. Most are very obscure, with the possible exception of the one for student journalists. Anyway, none of them have any reasonably direct relevance to the toon, and my point is just to remind people to include links to reference material whenever it exists. --TheNicestGuy 14:57, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ceiling?

The trivia about it being the first time we see a ceiling is incorrect. In Strong_Mad's character video, we see the ceiling of the basement. It's the first time we see the Computer room's ceiling, but a ceiling in general? Hardly. --Musachan 18:45, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Musachan

Read the Fact again. The basement is not on the same level as the Computer Room, which is why it's worded the way it is. If you think the wording doesn't work, edit it; if you think it's not noteworthy, STUFF it. (For what it's worth, I don't think it's terribly noteworthy myself, as long as the Inside Reference to different town is present.) But if the basement is the only ceiling we've seen so far, the Fact is technically correct as written. --TheNicestGuy 19:45, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chicken Foot

How exactly can you tell that they are playing "Chicken Foot" - the WP link didn't exactly give any hints as to how you'd tell... --phlip TC 00:46, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Actually, closer reading of the WP page reveals "No other plays can be made until all four sides of the double [which is the first domino played] are filled." The only domino on the table is the double 3, which definatly does not have all 4 sides filled. Since this is pretty much the only distinguishing feature of Chicken Foot AFAICT, the fact is wrong. --phlip TC 00:49, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pop-Up Book

Too bad there's no Easter Egg where you get to use the pop-up book... <:-{

That would truly rock. Who knows, they might release it as a short, in a week or two. That would be awsome though. Thunderbird 01:24, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
It would be even cooler if they sold the pop-up book in the store --Dacheatbot · Communicate
That would be a challenge, since many of the features would be impossible to make with actual paper... --phlip TC 01:42, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
What makes you say that? I've seen some pretty complex pop-up books. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:31, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Ever see one that could make burgers appear out of thin air? {spooky music plays} --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:32, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, okay, you've got a point there. :) But you could get a cockroach to crawl around in the book without too much trouble. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:47, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pages

Can we agree that when SB refers to the 1st page, he'sactually referring to pp 2-3; 2, 4-5; 3, 6-7; etc? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 07:06, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

I think you're right, Qermaq. I actually meant to get rid of the reference you're talking about myself; I didn't revert far enough back that last time. Heimstern Läufer 07:08, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Closed STUFF

[edit] Fryer and Fryer

On the last page of the pop-up book, the "Fat Fryer" may be a reference to the "Fat Friar", a ghost in Harry Potter.

[edit] Jumping ability

The second time we've seen Strong Bad's jumping ability? What about in Lady-ing, or whatever it's called? 67.78.136.222 09:46, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Good kid

This is probably a huge stretch, but based on what we've seen, Strong Bad being a "good kid" is the exact opposite of a "bad guy", which Strong Bad is so-called. As seen in several 20X6 things, being a kid is the opposite of being the guy. Therefore, good kid = bad guy. SaltyTalk! 04:31, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] key remark

  • In the Easter egg, it is implied that Bubs is handing over the key to a car. However, the key more strongly resembles a house key, notably in the shape of the head and the fact that it is cut on only one side, a rarity in car keys.

It might just be because I'm an old fart, but I've seen plenty of car keys that are the same style as house keys. Of course, I'm only one person, and I'm not exactly an auto enthusiast, so I'll leave it up to someone else to decide if this should perhaps be edited to say that most modern car keys don't look like that... or... something. - Uglinessman 16:35, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm an old fart too, and up until about 2004 was driving a car with a key cut only on one side (actually there were three such in my family's use). So the reduction in the certainty of the fact, I think, also reduces its noteworthiness. Is it really necessary to say that this car appears to have been made before the late 90s? If they are (as has been conjectured) the keys to the Gremlin, then of course it was! —AbdiViklas 16:45, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A real pop-up book?

I'm surprised nobody made a real pop-up book like that and submitted it as fan art. I mean they probably would have shown it already if they received a picture of one, right? Steve Talk Contributions 19:13, 23 July 2006 (UTC) (My sig is broken right now, sorry)

Like people mentioned once, it's impossible to make this book. Some of the flaps over-ride eachother. I also fixed the sig. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 19:43, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "I'm gonna" or "I'm-a"

In the line "I'm gonna go eat my burgers", I do hear "I'm gonna", not "I'm-a"... --phlip TC 20:50, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I've listened to it some more times now, and I finally agree. It is very faint, though.  Loafing 20:52, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I listened to it a bunch more, and now it sounds like "I'm-a"... I can hear it either way if I try... I just dunno anymore. --phlip TC 20:54, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm quite convinced now that it is "gonna go". Anyway, I suggest that we stick to what he types if we're unsure. Loafing 20:58, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. Heimstern Läufer 21:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
I easily hear "I'm gonna go eat." So, I say we take the note out of the xscript. It would be pretty non-notable anyway even if he did say "I'ma." —BazookaJoe 21:03, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Strong Sad Goof

On the page with strong sad and the cement, ram's blood, etc., the "label" that turns with the wheel doesn't have the words move with the circle very well. Is this a goof?
