Talk:Website Sightings

From Homestar Runner Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Do we add like any website that has anything to do with homestarrunner, like an easter egg website or a mention.

As long as it's relevant and significant. If someone's weblog mentions H*R.com, no one cares. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 08:23, 19 Jul 2005 (UTC)

My personal website has one of the old banners on it with a link to H*R. Is it worth mentioning? If it is, is it ok just to mention it without the link? I wouldn't want to put it out to a massive public like the WIKI readers or anything, since it is a personal site.--Martin925 02:34, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Speaking of Atari Age, would this count? Homsar

[edit] Kingdom Hearts

Could I add the reference to Homestar from the web cartoon Kingdom Hearts Chronicles?

Already there, man. Though you should probably look at Animation Sightings. -Marth 99 21:03, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Tenkay Commotion.com

On the comic "Stage 3: Time for plan B" page 15 one of the characters says "Talkin bout my email (But I'll never ever ever ever sing a song by Strong Bad)"

[edit] Cleanup

Many items here don't name the site, or are alphabetized strangely. As is, it's a pretty unwieldy page. Someone should take this on as a pet project. (Not me tho.) Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 14:12, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Spelling fixed, alphabetizing fixed, all the ones that don't exist anymore i think are out.. anything else?--- Image:Videlectrix man.sig.gif Collin - (T/C) 22:23, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Who in their right mind alphabetizes "The ..." under "T"? Unless it's The Cheat or something, articles are ALWAYS dropped. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:33, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

The computer does, for one thing... --DorianGray
But it's incorrect contexually. I'm going to be adamant here, I'm afraid.... Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:38, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
EDiT:I do think we should count the second word after any "the"s, though. SO, I agree with ya. Bluebry 00:36, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
See, you're smart! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:38, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Now, now. We don't want to say some people are unsmart. Thanks for the compliment, anyways. :-) Bluebry 00:41, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
That was a non-exclusive "smart" comment. It should not be read to imply that any other individual is quantitatively less smart. So long as they drop articles when alphabetizing, that is. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:43, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
It appears that the alphabetical concernes have been addressed. I'm removing the cleanup notice for now. Thunderbird 16:22, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh was that me? oops. i'll remember that one.--- Image:Videlectrix man.sig.gif Collin - (T/C) 13:20, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Homestar Hunt 3

There's a game on www.diseasedproducts.com called Homestar Hunt 3 which has you shooting Homestar in the first 3 levels, and, in the final level, shooting Strong Bad in a giant mech. I know this because I played it once. :wierd anime tear thingy: Also, a cheat for more than enough money to get the best stuff is "dik"It's fun when you just wanna get rid of stress, as long as you don't play the 4th level. you have health, because SB can shoot you back. The first level is the most fun with all the best stuff in the game. Itsame

Doesn't seem to be a real site, (or a game one anyway..) if you find the real site, possibly even to the game itself, i could put it in. and screenshots are good too.--- Image:Videlectrix man.sig.gif Collin - (T/C) 22:21, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 24-bit Theater

We now have 8-bit Theater linked in three places - once here, once in comics, and once in animations. The content partially repeats itself between them. We should standardize them (either by splitting the content, or putting the content all in one place). Which way, people? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:52, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

My opinion: an animated cartoon goes on Animation. A static cartoon goes on Comics. A non-cartoon but on a website goes on Website. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:17, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Best Page In The Universe first account

"...and according to his book signing tour in 2006, he likes Strong Bad." This could have been a lie by the IP address.--H*Bad 05:15, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

YouTube is currently down for updates and maintenance. However, if you go to their page, their will be a random photo of their offices. 2 of the shots show a The Cheat plushie sitting on a bookshelf. The Spainish Inquisition

[edit] Olde English + Beanies

In the sketch Jurrasic Park, Joel Clark and Caleb Bark seem to be wearing what I thought were Homestar Runner beanies. The logo looks like an HR thing. However, I can't find that kind of beanie in the store or in the wiki. Could someone explain this for me? --Pladams9 02:18, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I watched the whole thing and saw nothing even remotely reminiscent of H*R. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:31, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
I just thought that I had seen the red/white/blue star that was on their beanie caps. Thought it might be H*R seeing as it's a star and the H*R website uses that color scheme for the Homestar. Must have seen it somewhere else, though. --Pladams9 15:11, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Battery images - Objection!

Go check out the Engrish.com website (link provided). At the bottom of the page, underneath the image, the webmaster has found a link pointing to a site where, it seems, the Bros. have found the battery images used in the sbemail in question. He even says that people have been telling him it's from H*R! Maybe we should call this a fake.

I'm fairly sure the webmaster at Engrish is mistaken, and that the site that has those images also took them from H*R.com. Heimstern Läufer 22:58, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Funny Junk Banner?

Should we put one of those Parental Discretion Advised signs on the Funny Junk part? I've been there a lot and it's mostly ALL, as Strong Bad would say, "a bunch of crazy crap". -WeirdAl (talk · 18:31, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Homestar Runner Wiki Sightings?

I'm just wondering if we have a page for other websites that link to HRWiki. Many other wikis do, including Wikipedia and the Interactive Fiction Wiki (on the Thy Dungeonman 3 page, next to the link, they said we have an "extraordinary amount of detail" about the game). Would this be too much of a hassle to do or not pertain to Homestar Runner enough? I think it's a good idea personally and would be more than willing to make the page. -Brightstar Shiner 15:06, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Pages that are about/link to HRWiki: HRWiki:Articles about HRWiki. Bluebry 15:07, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I know that, but those website sightings are purely about HRWiki, not just linking to it. The media in Sightings reference H*R, but they're not reviewing it or something. I thought we should have a page similar to Sightings for the HRWiki. -Brightstar Shiner 15:13, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
No, no, they're pretty much all articles or texts about the HRWiki. Bluebry 15:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
That's what I was trying to say. By Sightings, I mean this one, not this one. Do you sort of see what I mean? -Brightstar Shiner 15:18, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh, you mean like, if HRWiki is mentioned on some show, or website, we list it? Naw, I think we're fine just linking to pages that only give in-depth information about the HRWiki. Bluebry 15:21, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
If I read you correctly, you want to go farther than note pages that discuss the wiki and also note pages that just link here? I'm thinking that'd be a useless exercise. The Articles page is there to document the impact we have had on the H*R community for good or bad. But mere links here - that's not really offering anyone anything of value, I'm thinking. It's one thing to note links to H*R because it demonstrates their cultural significance, but we aren't in the business of demonstrating our cultural significance. We document H*R and to the extent we're described as a good, bad or some other type resource, that's notable as an example of how well we do what we do. (Am I making any sense? It's kinda early for me...) Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:22, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess you're right. It's not early for me, but I'm editing in my bed as we speak (type?). Maybe I'm just delusional from reading all of Addict 2006's Wikipedia userboxes (you try it sometime!). -Brightstar Shiner 15:36, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] April Fools 2006 Wikipedia

A screenshot Wikipedia:Image:Baleeted.png from Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense#April fools 2006 had a "Delete" tag renamed "Baleeted". --Addict 2006 16:33, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How notable?

Is The external website linked here contains offensive language and/or content. content warning this site even remotely notable? I ran into it the other day and thought that it was cool they referred to H*R, but it's just a blog. Still I wanted to post about it in case there's a glimmer of a hope of a chance that there's some notability to it. --Stux 00:47, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FFXIclopedia.org...... It's Dot Com!

That is the new banner on Final Fantasy XI's Wikipedia site (now officially PlayOnline advocated since Feb2007). It is to signify the fact they could afford to buy the FFXIclopedia.com domain. There is no way at all you can tell me that it isn't a Homestar reference. The wording and everything is exact. I am writing this here because I can't complain if I'm proven wrong here, but I can (and probably would because I am a jerk) if it is deleted from the main page of this. Now for the operative question....Does This Count? Stinkoblade 17:53, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

In my haste I forgot a VERY, VERY, VERY important detail that could justify even adding it. It is one of their temporary banners that will only be up for about 3 months, if even that. The thought occurred to me right before I left to watch MythBusters. You guys argue over it. I'll be back in about 2 hours from this post. Stinkoblade 18:06, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page Reorg

Of the Sightings group, this page (naturally) seems to get the most activity. With over 100 sightings and exceeding WikiMedia's 32kb warning, this page is in need for a reorganization. Anyone have any ideas how to do a reorg? Splitting A-N, M-Z? Having collapsing letter categories? Mass removal? Other ideas? wbwolf (t | ed) 18:33, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Why?

I put a youtube sighting and a FlyingFlamingo.com sighting, and both of 'em are deleted. Does it have to have something? Why are they deleted?- LordJ

Don't know. Why are you asking this? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 23:27, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Can someone please REALLY answer me? I didn't make that JUST to put it on here!!

I did answer. Probably, not a really needed comment. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 00:07, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Oh! I thought that was sarcasm! Well, I'm going to re-post it! And NOBODY deletes it! Ceez! It's not like it's against the rules to post a totally relevent article!! OH, YEAH... THAT'S WHAT THIS WIKI IS ALL ABOUT!! Huff, puff, huff, puff..... Alright I'm better now!- It's that guy! With that plane!

[edit] another addicting one

[edit] CSS fixing?

What about the "Dress Up Barack Obama" code? It kind of bugs me a little how it goes off screen and the background peeks out. And I even have a good screen width (1280px). Could anyone put in a span tag to fix this without messing the code up? I've tried what I know for CSS, but I can't seem to fix it. --71.157.162.191 20:35, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speaking of Youtube...

I was watching a Super Smash Bros. Brawl video, one of the fake character rosters had Homestar and Strong Bad as playable characters. Coincidental! --Roboblob 14:01, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Kerrek At Linux From Scratch?!?!

Hey,

I am a Linux-loving guy, and I found something that might be condicred a reference.

See kerrek.linuxfromscratch.org? That is a LFS mirror.
Notice anything about this URL?
Who made up the name was obviously playing Peasant's Quest. (heh, heh)

I'm just wondering, does that count as a reference?

[edit] Most likely STUFF'd or won't count

This was placed in the article just recently:

ScrewAttack

Notice The following website is outside of www.hrwiki.org and contains crude or vulgar language and/or content. Personal discretion is advised.

In the Top Ten Best and Worst Gaming Peripherals video The external website linked here contains offensive language and/or content. HIGHLY inappropriate material for #1 best peripheral, an 8-bit version of the 20X6 theme (actually the Rad Racer theme, on which it is based on) is heard while the hosts and the Angry Video Game Nerd discuss the Power Glove (#4 worst peripheral on the list)

Sure I've tweaked it up, but it probably won't count due to it being the Rad Racer theme, which is from a NES game and ScrewAttack specializes in video games. Am I right? --Addict 2006 13:58, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely. I love the ScrewAttack guys and all, but I too say that this isn't a direct Homestar reference. Rexy-mberween (save the rabbits!) 14:48, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

On this website, there's a game called Destroy All Cars. In it, there is a vehicle called Wolksvagon. Does this qualify as a sighting? Star Guy T/C 23:06, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Episde of Weebl and Bob called "E-mail"

I only skimmed the topic bar, so forgive me if this is there. There's a Weebl and Bob episode called "E-mail", and when Weebl brings up the subject matter, Bob relies "Like that Strong Bad chap?". Weebl denies his existance, then checks emails in a very Strong Bad-esque way. SI.com!

[edit] My Spore-make?

Would it be okay to add my remake of Parsnips-a-Plenty to the youtube section? [link] User:Guybrush20X6

Is it notable in the Spore community? Is it a notable YouTube video? If so, then yes. And besides, This is more of a fan work. not a reference in an unrelated work. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 13:05, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, it got over 180 veiws and a 4.5 star rating but I'm guessing that doesn't count as notable. Shame. User:Guybrush20X6

On encyclopedia when you get banned and try to edit, it say's you've been Burninated. I'm not sure if it still does this, becuase last time I was banned was in 2007. 75.83.111.225

"Encyclopedia"? Do you mean Wikipedia? I kinda doubt it if that's the case (unless someone vandalized the block message.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:22, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
I believe what he's trying to say is UNcyclopedia, in which case it is noted under the Uncyclopedia heading. Besides, he says BANinated, but still, a reference. I'm not going to ask how he found that out.--Jellote wuz here 20:35, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] TSLS Quest

"Buy Kerrek a Cold One".

I was watching The Super Luigi Show on YouTube and found out that on the latest episode contained Luigi playing Peasant's Quest. View it here (note: the episode is the featured video). I thought since we have a section for TSLS on YouTube, this might be worth mentioning, anyone agree/disagree? This is A Website (T/C) 19:23, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

That YouTube channel is not popular enough to warrant a mention. Most of the videos there don't have more then a 100 views. Something on the internet needs to be really popular before it can pass as a sighting, because in today's days everyone can upload themselves doing anything they want. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 07:37, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
So how many views would a video need to be mentioned? 74.15.138.249 20:04, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I can't pin the exact number, but somewhere in the tens- or hundred-thousands of views. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Recent YouTube problem

The youTube section is very long, and from time to time someone comes along and drop a link to their video there. If you looked at the sections above on this talk page, I addressed this issue with other users personally. I think there should be some kind of standard for user-created content and notability. Not every home-made videro of some guy quoting Homestar while playing his Wii that have about 200 views should be listed here. I'm not looking for some set-in-stone number of views to be out standard, but some way to decide what goes on this page. I'm also interested to hear if there is anyone who thinks differently - That we should put that video on the guy with his Wii. Opinions? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 05:50, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

I've been thinking, maybe we should have Youtube sightings one it's own page. Or at least on for yotube based series. That way we could monitor it better. Guybrush20X6 19:22, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
I Don't think that lowering our standards is a good solution. A YouTube Sightings page could be the start of a slippery slope to other pages. It's not that more pages is a bad thing, but no one is going to read them, or check out all the links. These are just videos of guys saying "Seriously" all the time and acting like morons. All The time. I also see this problem being addressed in Talk:Animation Sightings#Youtube Criteria.
I'm going to go ahead here and just suggest what notability criteria comes to my mind:
  • The video must have more then 50,000 views.
  • The video must have more then 10,000 views.
  • The video mustn't be some kind of plotless vlog.
  • The video should be produced at least somewhat professionally (A suggestion of a script, editing, an actual camera, etc.)
  • The sighting should be a major part of the video. Not some throwaway 'd gag.
  • No YouTubePoop crap. Just... No.
  • The uploader should be at least notable in YouTube. (For example: Two Guys have a 5-million-views clip on their Swearing At Sea video, but reference Strong Bad in their 3000-views How We Made Swearing At Sea)
These are what just popped in my mind to get this discussion rolling. Let's see your response. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 05:12, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Facebook Page

Does this Facebook Page count? --mr_nutt 15:27, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Yo! No, I don't think this is a Website Sighting as much as it as a website about Homestar Runner. There are no Homestar fansites on the list so I don't think this qualifies either. --Garfunkel 15:43, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Deceased Crab! Huzzah!

DeceasedCrab, famed and infamous in the Let's Play community, is a Homestar Runner fan. The evidence is as follows:

  • He has done playthroughs of Peasant's Quest and Where's and Egg, and makes many in-jokes about the show in them.
  • He tells a skeleton "No one likes your style" in the first episode of his Let's Play of Maze of Galious, which becomes a running gag in later episodes.
  • In Episode 15 of said Let's Play, he shouts Arrowed when he slays a monster with an arrow.

There may be more, but he has over 900 episodes out there, and I've only seen about 200. So, here is the problem I face: where to list these? Do we put them under the Youtube heading, or make a new heading, as Let's Play is a community that spans websites. Or should we take a third option and give him a heading of his own. I am not the one to make this choice, so may I ask those who know better? --Jellote wuz here 22:28, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Nah, I don't think that counts. Of all the hundreds of Homestar Runner references and tributes there are on YouTube, none need to be noted simply because it's a site that anyone can upload to. If we add him, then we'll need to add BikdipOnABus for his references and even Brynna for playing TROGDOR! in one of her LPs. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 22:44, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
I don't want to sound rude, but I have several problems with not counting this. For one thing, a lot less popular, less viewed things are counted. On top of that, there are dozens of videos from Youtube that are nearly lacking any views, but those are cool with us. Some of which have been added by the people who made them (which I refrained from, as I do not believe in self-advertising). If we say nothing on Youtube counts, we might as well throw out the entire folder. If only popular videos on Youtube count, DeceasedCrab counts 100%. If any video counts, as we seem to be allowing, there is no contest. The Youtube folder has bugged me for years, and no consensus has ever been come to, or enforced. For the time being, DeceasedCrab passes standards, and why not the other two? If the Super Luigi Show can be on this page, then Let's Players can be, too. --Jellote wuz here 23:23, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
If that's your logic go ahead and scout out every YouTube video that even briefly mentions Homstar, add it to the page, and even add special credit to the person that made it. We're talking Nostalgia Critic, we're talking the Homestar Runner fan thing, RCWHR, you name it. Add it, add it through a wild editing spree. I'm not stopping you. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 23:47, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
Well, its not that. Its that everyone has been doing so, and only now is there a problem with it. It just strikes me as odd that the Youtube folder has been the dumping grounds for everyone's home videos, but I am chastised for wanting to add someone else's more professional video. If you don't want me to add it, I won't. I'll let that decision fall upon the rest of the wiki.--Jellote wuz here 23:52, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
DeceasedCrab has nearly 25,000 subscribers. I say he's important enough to warrant a mention with our current policy. However, if we eventually decide that only specific popular videos (over 500,000 views) and things from the company itself should be mentioned, which is how I feel we should manage this, then I don't think he should be mentioned. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 04:54, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Bubs, are you trying to write me a lemon?

First of all, let me warn you that all that follows is extremely not safe for work.

Secondly, while reading the "sporking" a legendarily bad fan fiction, Naga Eyes, I found that the malfunctioning computer shouted "bat**** equals very yes! That's not a good prize!" after it had been driven insane by the story. Link can be found here, but I once again reiterate that it is not safe for work. If you wish to skip reading the story, which I recommend due to it being rather graphic, press Ctrl and F to bring up a search bar and type "bad prize" to find the quote.--Jellote wuz here 05:32, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Smosh?

There were many sightings of Homestar Runner in Smosh. For example, in the video "More Anthrax In Our Mail", they get a package with Trogdor on it, accompanied by Ian singing his theme song. He also appeared in the video "Orgy Face in our Mail". In "Caveman Drive-Thru Prank", not only is Strong Bad mentioned, but he's featured in the thumbnail. In "German and Israeli Food Test", there is an appearance of Marzipan, with Ian doing a bad impersonation of Homestar. Do these count?

I don't see why they wouldn't. Go ahead. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 04:26, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
Can someone add it for me? I'm not really good at editing. PikaSka 05:12, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Dungeonman ref. in Homestuck?

So I started reading Homestuck recently and noticed a possible Dungeonman reference. When Wayward Vagabond is trying to get cord to safely climb off of this big structure thing, the page is titled "Get Ye Rope". This could easily be a coincidence but I thought it should be mentioned anyways.

Here's the link: [[3]]

Nevermind it's already been mentioned under comics sorry

[edit] Transformers Wiki

Do we really need to catalog every individual Homestar Runner reference made by the Transformers Wiki? It's awesome that there are a bunch of Homestar fans over there, but the list is getting extensive, and it'll keep growing every time an editor decides to caption an image with a sbemail reference. That section could be shortened to "Many image captions on the Transformers Wiki contain references to Homestar Runner" and nothing of value would be lost. Lira (talk) 01:33, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, sound more like the material that belongs on a personal project page. Guybrush20X6 02:13, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Yep. It almost feels like just one person adding all these references and putting them on this page. If anyone can add a reference to that wiki, we probably don't need to document them all. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 02:24, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

[edit] Survey says... is Jay right? (reference issues since ive never seen family feud)

According to jay in this edit Not Always Right said "Survey says, you're an idiot" was a reference to this sbemail, which... I agree, but do other people as well? I'm not on the fence but I am sure others are, so I'm putting this on the table as a thing worth talking about. --J∃ffJMan 17:26, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

"Survey Says" is a very common phrase in pop-culture due to how long Family Feud has been running. IMHO "Survey Says... you're an idiot" is generic enough (do a quick Google search with it in quotes, there are more memes with Steve Harvey than Strong Bad) that unless there's additional context and/or a history of H*R references then it's not necessarily quoting Stro Bro. -- Bleu Ninja 20:28, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
Steve Harvey took over the show in 2010. The sbemail came out in 2002. It is absolutely possible that the memes were a cross-reference. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 00:24, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

[edit] YouTube Sightings

I feel like we should move the YouTube section to its own separate page, as the section has gotten incredibly lengthy. Whaddya think? - HoveringSombrero (talk)

There's been some talk about a possible split for web video sightings in general in this discussion. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 22:01, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
