"SHMUP" is short of "shoot'em up", a genre of games that involves controlling a ship to dodge obstacles and blast away enemies with projectile weapons.

Real-World References
- Ned Flanders is a character from The Simpsons, who is the next door neighbor to the eponymous family. He is a devout but friendly Christian who is a father of two kids, but Homer Simpson has a disliking for him because he finds his overly optimistic attitude to be irritating.
- Xeliogravius is a parody of Gradius, a series of space shooters by Konami that involves the Vic Viper and Lord British to fight against an alien scourge called the Bacterian. There are some instances where the levels take place inside a living organism, as suggested with the background of Xeliogravius, which resembles the interior of a mouth.
