Recap

This was originally posted on It's dot com's talk page. He realizes, however, that he will not be able to give this one a good answer for a few days, and doesn't want Kookykman to have to wait that long. Therefore, he is moving the question here to a more public place where anyone can address it.

Can I get a recap (no need to be brief, I have time) of the things that have happened here since the start of December? The wiki seems very different after my short break. o_0 - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r) 02:53, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. Probably the most easily summed-up change was The Tale of the Guestbooks. Aside from that, we gained some regularly-editing members and lost others. I'll let It's dot com elaborate, elucidate, expatiate, illustrate, lucubrate, and/or corroborate. —AbdiViklas 06:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, I never liked guestbooks anyway. So good riddance, I say! Also, I've noticed the blurry and insanely hard to read letter codes for annonys... Who left? Who came? (I feel like an idiot asking all these questions, when I used to be Mr. In-The-Loop. =P) - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r) 20:44, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Among others, Bubsty left. For, like, a year... Others have come. --DorianGray
And the blurry letters, a.k.a. "Captcha," are the upshot of the NSMC event (I believe you were around for that, right?), verifying that anonnys are actually real human beings. —AbdiViklas 01:32, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I was around for NSMC, but these numbers are a little too blurry and twisty, even by usual website twisty and blurry standards. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r) 21:28, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Where's the New Weeklies on the WIki??? February 16, 2006

I was just on the official H*R website and its got new weeklies. The wiki hasn't posted it yet and I don't know how to add it. I thought this site was so we didn't have to go onto the official site to look for updates.

Yes, but we don't have superhuman speed. It usually takes a few minutes for it to update along with the site, and a few hours to finish a new toon's page. - Joshua 00:16, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
It's correct that it takes time, because last year, I got on the official website and watched Happy Fireworks at about 9:00 A.M., and had to create the wiki page for it, so it's a good thing we have so many contributors. -Penguindude

Napoleon Dynamite is a Homestar Rip-Off??

I have this theory, that Napoleon Dynamite is a live-action rip-off of the homestar runner universe and characters. I've posted my evidence / conspiracy theory here: http://andrew.hicox.com/?article_id=97 what do you guys think? am I crazy?

I believe that you have several good points in your post, but that would just have to be a major conspiracy. The Brothers Chaps could sue for hundreds of millions of dollars. I'm afraid it's probably just a coincidence. — Lapper (talk) 13:55, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
Tell TBC and see what they think about it-- Benol, aka Coach B 14:20, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
The entire post is completely opinionated. While there are good points, like Lapper said, I don't think anyo of it bears any resemblence to Homestar Runner. Seriously (Talk) 16:38, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism of other wikis

This is notice that vandalism of other wikis in the name of the Homestar Runner Wiki will not be tolerated. Anyone found vandalizing another wiki in our name will be blocked on this wiki for a duration at least as long as if the vandalism had occurred here. — It's dot com 21:00, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

I apologize greatly for what I have done in the past, and I accept full responsibility for what I did. It seems that I may have started a trend of wiki-vandalism, And I also apologize greatly for that. Since I trolled before this rule wa made, I kind of have a loophole out of this, but I would not mind spending the time off anyway. Seriously (Talk) 21:04, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Look, you do not need to reply to every discussion out there. Sometimes, you can let things just speak for themselves. — It's dot com 21:07, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
This is User:Revidnioc on the Wikicities server, and I don't like this trend. A troll has made several usernames on the Pikmin wiki and they seem to copy each other, one of them being "HRwiki.com is bhghbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb" or something like that. Is this the troll trend?

Just a little question.

Can blocked users still read the wiki? Just wondering.-- Benol, aka Coach B 21:34, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Two great ideas

I have two great ideas.

1. We should list how many frames each toon is. 2. We should have a category for toons and emails with commercials in them.

What do you think? Homfrog 18:13, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't think the number of frames in a toon is really notable. I know of at least one case where it is, and it's noted in the respective article. As for commercials, that's not something we would have a category for. -- Tom 20:52, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
It's also noted in 500 The Cheats, since counting the frames means counting The Cheats. Besides those two special cases, Running Time pretty much covers the burning question - which toon's longer. Thunderbird 21:08, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
And regarding #2, I don't think, unless the toon actually is a commercial, it's very useful. But it could be a useful category for such commercials, such as Meet Marshie. teeeffoh! 21:11, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
There are lots I can thing of, such as Meet Marshie (as mentioned 'bove), Cheat Commandos...O's, Cheat Commandos, Fluffy Puff Commercial (sort of), and Strong Bad Sings to name a few obivous ones. Add to that there's also several trailers, such as Peasant's Quest Movie Trailer and Peasant's Quest Preview, plus In Search of the Yello Dello Theatrical Trailer. I'm not sure exactly how to sort 'em, I'm just listing. Thunderbird 21:19, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I just experienced some problems, too. Up at the top of the recent changes page was some code or something, but more than what you had, and instead of "line 19" it was like 157 or something around there. It's gone now, but the font is all weird now. SaltyTalk! 00:43, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Did anyone else notice that most of the users on the wiki live in the Midwestern United States? That's just a little fun fact. Remember, I said MOST. (I had to say that before any arguments got started.)-- Benol, aka Coach B 19:21, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't think "Most" users (over 50%) of the wiki live anywhere in particular. They seem pretty scattered to me. Thunderbird 19:26, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Do you think that we could make the You have new messages thing where it has a link so you can see the diff like Wikipedia's? like this:

You have new messages. (diff)

Not sure. It might be an upgrade that we have not gotten yet, like somethingin mediawiki 1.6. That's what I think. — Seriously (Talk) 15:12, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Might be, but I'm tired of having new messages and not knowing who it's from or where they edited.-- Benol, aka Coach B 15:27, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, Benol, if you look to the recent changes, with the "You have new messages." banner still showing, scan the page for a bold change to your talk page. If you click the "diff" on that, you'll see where the message was left. Alternatively, you could check your talk page's history. — Lapper (talk) 15:34, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
You can also check your watchlist. This change is a part of version 1.6 (which has not been released in a stable form yet). — It's dot com 22:57, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, this is a little off topic, but I also think that there should be a ban on the message bar pranks on user pages. Quite frankly, they are not funny and just annoying. -AtionSong 21:34, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Inside/Outside

I'd like to make a proposition, but that might get me in trouble, so I'll make a proposal instead.

In the talk page for Under Construction, I mention that all the items mentioned in the "Real World References" section are cartoons and games. At the time I suggested changing it to "External References", but I now realize that's dumb. However, I think "Outside References" might not be too bad. After all, it usually follows "Inside References" in the articles, right? E.L. Cool said "Although the cartoons and games are not "Real World", they are published in the real world, as in the world outside of the Homestar Runner universe." This therefore suggests that anything outside the H*R universe is "real life", which doesn't quite... um... follow logic, in my opinion. "Outside References" would be more accurate.

Joshua and Lapper pointed out that it would be a massive project to affect this change on all articles. I don't know how major changes like this happen on these wiki things, if there's a vote or whatever, but if it's decided that a change would be appropriate, I think it would be easy to simply ask if anyone would volunteer to start the edits, and then split the task among those who volunteered. For example, I would start doing it on all of the Strong Bad Email articles, and when I was done with that I would see what else hadn't been changed left and offer to help with those sections.

Sorry that this isn't very eloquent, I usually don't sound this stupid. But you have to admit, I at least deserve props for making proper usage of the word "affect" instead of erroneously saying "effect". - Uglinessman 14:57, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

It does make sense to me. If this is accepted, then I volunteer to do TGS and Short Toons. --אוקאלייליי (Ookelaylay)
Please, do not feel stupid for making a serious proposal. True, it's a major change in our standards, but it still worth our time and consideration.
You quoted my reply from the Under Construction talk page, but you twisted what I said. I didn't say that anything outside the Homestar Runner universe is "real world". As you wrote, that would be unlogical. What I did say that anything published outside of the Homestar Runner universe counts as real world.
Here is an example from Under Construction: The fun fact is "Stickly Man is almost certainly a reference to the popular Flash cartoon series Xiao Xiao, where stick figures battle in elaborately-choreographed fight scenes." If you'll go to the Wikipedia link provided inside the fact you'll see that "Xiao Xiao is a Flash cartoon series by Chinese animator Zhu Zhiqiang, featuring stick-figure men performing choreographed fight scenes." Now, Mr. Zhiqiang is a man living in the real world. In the contrary, let's take a look on the Teen Girl Squad page: "Strong Bad's spur of the moment comic strip soon became a series of its own." Strong Bad is in the Homestar Runner universe, and therefor any fun fact mentioning TGS, is not real world.
Hope this answers your question, Elcool (talk)(contribs) 15:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I still disagree with the distinction, because the human beings responsible for the entire Homestar Runner site also live in the same "real world" as Zhu Zhiqiang. The fact that, within the site's mythology, the character of Strong Bad "created" TGS doesn't change the fact that the entire site, including Strong Bad, Trogdor and PanPan, were all created by humans in the same "real world" as anything outside of H*R that gets referenced. The audio commentaries on the DVD blur and confuse this line even further, since some commentaries are voiced by characters, some by humans not speaking in characters, and some in combination. Basically, nothing I've read so far has convinced me that "Real World" is a good term for this distinction. - Uglinessman 19:52, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I do not support changing the name. From the perspective of TBC, anything taken from outside the universe of H*R qualifies as something found in their real world, as opposed to the world that they created. The fact that they may be referencing other works of fiction doesn't change the fact that these other works really exist. I think this is a distinction without a difference, and not really worth changing. — It's dot com 20:13, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I do support changing the name. I think it sounds much better, as technically the cartoons are real-life too. Everything we talk about on this wiki is in real life, and so to avoid complications it would be better to change it to outside references. It also fits perfecly with inside references. — Seriously (Talk) 20:53, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh yeah—if this project is undertaken, I call Strong Bad emals 1-50. Or possiby even 1-75. — Seriously (Talk) 20:55, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I also do not support changing the name. As It's dot com said, anything "outside" of the Homstar Runner universe is the "real-world". Although the points behind this proposal are valid, it's simply a rather petty difference. — Lapper (talk) 20:59, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I think "inside and outside" might make more sense, but I don't think it's worth the trouble of changing it. With crap, Yeltensic (T C) 21:07, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I think a vote is in order. It's the best way. — Seriously (Talk) 21:08, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Actually Seriously, we avoid votes as much as possible for things like this. We try to discuss things until a rough consensus is reached. Additionally, stating your opinions as if they were fact isn't a good way to win over others in a discussion.
As for the topic at hand, I agree with It's dot com, and do not support changing the name. -- Tom 02:31, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I too echo many previously stated sentiments, and do not support the renaming of "Real-World References" to "Outside References". Real-Word is alot clearer as to what they are than "Outside References". Thunderbird 03:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
How is "Real World" clearer? Real world human beings have done DVD audio commentaries (not in character), yet anything referencing these commentaries is an "Inside Reference", which by distinction under the current system is not "real world", despite the fact that the humans exist in the real world, and did their commentary as real world humans rather than within-the-H*R-universe characters. This doesn't seem very clear.
On the other hand, anything in the H*R universe is inside, anything not in the H*R universe is outside, whether it's fictional characters, historical figures, cartoons, musical recordings, etc. This distinction seems much more clear to me. - Uglinessman 11:42, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm with "Real World" per Thunderbird's statement. - Joshua 13:10, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I kind of like the idea. "Outside References"... sounds good to me. Trelawney

I see all the reasons for changing it, but I think I a actually against it. #1, it would be a pretty big hassle, but that could be resolved by using a bot, or something. #2, Real-World References sounds a bit clearer to be. I wouldn't mind if this is carried out, but it seems to be a pretty big hassle. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 20:49, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Ooh. There they are. They do look good. Nice work. =) Been a while since it updated, hasn't it? --DorianGray

What if the stars weren't quite so cut off at the bottom? — It's dot com 03:33, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, I could be alone here, but looking at the main page with the stars I can't help but feel I've stepped into a nursery. Thunderbird 04:00, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Looks somewhat like the English Wikipedia's newly redesigned main page. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 04:38, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree with It's Dot Com. You can barely see the stars. Maybe if they were smaller and fit in the lil' box there they'd be better. They's nice, though. SaltyTalk! 04:44, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I think the cutoff looks good and doesn't hide them too much. Do you have a abnormal screen resolution? - Joshua 05:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I love it, simple as that! - Volbeat A The Cheat 04:52, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Maybe if you replaced the little stars with little H*R symbol that were different colors, that'd be cool. DBK! 05:00, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Ya did a nice jorb there, guyrs! :) — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 06:37, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I really don't like this. There's just someting...offputting about it. I kind of agree with T-Bird. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Should knowledge base be capitalized?

I just noticed knowledge base was hyphenated in the welcome line and fixed that, but I also noticed it's capitalized in the browse box. I was going to be bold and lowercase it, but then I thought twice and figured I should ask. My inclination would be to uncapitalize it, but what do you think? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 02:54, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I was bold. ;) None of the other headings are title case; we should either change them all to title case or leave them all sentence case. — It's dot com 02:58, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
It's still hyphenated in the donation box. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

That one too, but I was referring to the main page bottom box, "If you've found this knowledge-base useful, please consider making a donation. Donations are used primarily to cover domain registration and hosting costs." Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
