I believe I have a bug report about the Recent Changes RSS feed. See I had subscribed to the feed in my feed reader and because of the warnings, I'm constantly seeing the same entries pop-up over and over again in my reader.

Has the First Time Here bot's text ever been changed since its creation? Because it is in desperate need of updates. Also, the following line needs to be reworded:

"If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum, or if you're feeling creative, you can register separately at the fanstuff wiki." But now the Knowledge Base and the Fanstuff have the same user database, so you shouldn't really register separately. And on a side note, why was the Fanstuff Wiki reopened when it was said here that it would never be reopened? And why do they now share the same user databases? I just noticed this, and was wondering if there was a discussion on proper quotation placement. In the united states, it's punctuation then quotation mark, but elsewhere--mainly--it's quotation mark then punctuation. Or so I have learned. ColdReactive 21:31, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

No, it's not. In the US, traditionally grammarians have said always to put the full stop or comma before the close quote; in the UK, it's standard to follow the sense of whether the full stop or comma belongs with the quoted material. Examples: 1. She said "I want to go to some pizza place." 2. She said she wanted to go to "some pizza place". The Wiki generally follows US standards for spelling and punctuation, but here we've made an exception and tend to use the latter system. It's not clear to me exactly why we do so, but I'm still for it because honestly, the US system doesn't make any sense at all and I refuse to follow it, anyway. That's about how i've gone about editing the wiki ever since this edit was changed. for some reason i still remember that. I wasn't sure which one it was, and apparently i guessed wrong. by now i have a better feel for how it's done here, and i just know when to use ." this and when to use ". that. i think i made that particular edit based on OSG's rule. and i am an American, yet i have to agree w/what heimstern said about the rule not making any sense. and the previous sentence from yet onward may be disregarded when concerning question marks (which is the rule that threw me off on that edit haha). <--which brings us to a similar question: what about periods before or after parentheses and parenthetical phrases? Periods almost never go inside a closing parenthesis (and I can't think of any time that a comma does). (Only if the entire sentence is in parentheses does the period go inside.) As for quotation marks, I strongly prefer the U.S. style in printed materials, like magazines and books, but for the wiki I prefer our custom style because of the default font we use. — It's dot com 17:29, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

You should be able to remove a parenthetical phrase from a sentence and still have it make grammatical sense. If you put the question mark inside the green, and then removed the green, the sentence would be missing its terminal punctuation. A parenthetical phrase either has to be a part of a sentence (in which case the punctuation of the outer sentence comes after the closing parenthesis), or it should be a sentence that can stand by itself. [[1]] a funny example of this issue. The user asked if he could be renamed "President Cold One", but because he put the question mark inside the quotation marks, Tom thought he meant "President Cold One?".

Hard to say. I started keeping track of it for a while, but then I realized that the numbers are skewed by Web crawlers, and I don't know to what degree. [edit] ToonInfo template

DorianGray suggested sorting the Filmographies by date rather than alphabetically. I took this idea and ran with it, creating a ToonInfo template... but hit a small stumbling block when I discovered that sorting Filmographies by date would have the side effect of every toon being listed under "2" where it's currently listed by letter. It's still possible (and not terribly hard) to sort by date, it would just unfortunately look odd on the Category pages. Nevertheless, the template works otherwise (the sort-by-date feature is not currently included.) It would help keep our format consistent and let us change the format more easily, but admittedly has the problem of having to physically add it to each and every toon on the site. First of all, I've always thought the filmographies would be better if they were in chronological order, and I think this template is cool and ambitious, but I think it's a little too complicated for the problem it's supposed to solve. Perhaps we could figure out a way to get the chronological functionality without having to edit every toon article. Or if we really do want to add something to all the articles, perhaps an extension would be better instead of a straight template in order to keep things as simple as possible. — It's dot com 17:10, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
I've seen other Wikis with templates on nearly every page that are far more complicated than that one, for what it's worth. Most notably Bulbapedia, who thrives on complicated templates. --Jay (Talk) 17:50, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh, yes, and problems with that STUFF template include the fact that STUFF pages were for discussion, so the entries can be very long and get changed often, and the variables don't have names so it's not intuitive what goes where. --Jay (Talk) 18:24, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay... my point was that it was overly complicated, even though it could have been made to work. Its specific problems were fixed and aren't all that relevant here. As I hinted at above, a simpler solution would be to change the nature of the filmographies pages so that they're automatically in chronological order (maybe even sortable). [edit] Personal image limit going unpoliced in forgotten users?

It started with just me being paranoid, but it turns out there are several users with more than two large images. If a user quits the wiki without responding to a talk page comment, or a user is never alerted (I found that several users were never told after checking their talk pages), what do we do about it? For one thing, it violates our regulations to have that many personals, but on the other hand we can't edit other people's user pages. Seeing how this situation is going on, how would we resolve it? Are we lax in cases like this and shrug it off, or is it just that nobody is as nit-picky about these things as I am and never checks? Yeah, I suppose this is a mild problem, but there are some big-name editors like this, some of which regularly contribute. Does it really matter? I can't make the call, so can I get professional opinion in here from someone who knows the rules better than me? --Jellote wuz here 00:15, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

The limits are in place to prevent people from abusing the privilege of a user page. If they're not active anymore, then it's probably not worth the effort to worry about it. Strong Bad Email is a large and important part of the site. Probably about 55% of the pages on this wiki are related to Strong Bad Email. In fact, the site wouldn't be as popular if Strong Bad Email didn't exist. I think that's plenty of proof for it to stay. doctorwho295 27 June 2010
Related how? About one-thirteenth of the wiki's articles are the SBEmail ones, as well as a couple of articles that have SBEmails organised in lists like location, sender's name etc. That's waaaaay less than 55%, but still quite a lot. [edit] iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app?

While the wiki was unusable on my old Nokia E71, it looks and works just fine on my iPhone 3GS. I don't know what an HRWiki app would look like, but I doubt it would add value. Also, there is no free way of developing an iPhone app if you don't want to jailbreak. Loafing 07:00, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

On the contrary, I think an HRWiki app would make browsing and editing the wiki much easier while on-the-go, as well as make it more enjoyable. If the HAIF App was found to be beneficial, I'm sure an HRWiki app would find its niche, too. It's just matter of finding someone dedicated enough to program it. Custom special pages that need discussion often have project or help pages associated with them. For example, Special:Ledger's talk page is at HRWiki talk:Ledger. Sorry, I'm not quite sure where also to mention this, but Steam is currently have a massive sale on the SBCGFAP games.


It's 10 USD for the disc at Best Buy by the way, and it's NOT a sale price. Steam just wants to beat best buy, seeing as their normal price on steam for the season is 30 USD. Who'd pay for a digital download when you could just ghost the disk as an imahge on your hard drive for free and payonly 10 USD. I think we should have different languages on the HRWiki now, like Wikipedia. I know is in English, “so people who watch probably know English”. But there are people who use the multilingual subtitles, who know English but not well or knows someone who speaks English, ECT. Perducci 01:28, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

True, but what better time than now? It being a hiatus and all. And we could use online translator* to start a page and the many fluent users (I have seen a few) could just tweak and edit.
*(I know, not the best, but it's a start and makes it easier for those fluent in that language. That’s how wikis work, people start, others add. And I recall translating a couple wiki pages, and it was a pretty good translation. Online translators are not "pretty good". They're enough to get the gist when you put in correct English, but when you factor in unusual names of characters and complex concepts and non-words that would be difficult for anyone to translate, it would just be awful. Instead of to use " simply; might" or " could" , the characters of the universe of the runner of Homestar, particularly running same of Homestar, tend to say sometimes could could instead of another one. Such uses of " non-standard" modals double is common in the vernacular one of the southern United States, including Georgia, where the cracks live on the brothers.

The reason Wikipedia works in other languages is because they have the demand, infrastructure, and userbase to justify it. Unless and until a very large group of people step forward and say, "Gosh, I would totally contribute to a Homestar Runner Wiki if only there were one were available in my native language; I can't contribute to this one because I don't speak any English except for the preceding sentence and this one explaining it," I can't imagine allocating resources for such a project. — It's dot com 04:33, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Dot com on this one. The people who use this wiki are pretty much all English speakers, so not only would translating all this crap be a colossal waste of time, no one would even use it. And what's the point of having the articles translated in BabelFish or Google Translator if they can just copy/paste it themselves? I vote no on this one.
