I was just wondering for no particular reason what my chances of becoming a sysop are. I couldn't tell from the user list what the ratio of legitimate users to sysops were, because most of the users seemed to be disposable accounts and sockpuppets. :::::: Well, I tried adding the letter to Matt Chapman's page, but it got reverted because JoeyDay might not want to make a big deal out of it. Is work still going on with the Homestarrunner.net site? It's been the same for many months with no improvements. Is there just a lot of behind-the-scenes work, or have you just forgotten? :'''Second'd!''' I'm liking it, Coolio. I also like your remark about it being "short enough not to be too long"; that sums it up pretty well. :Freenode [http://freenode.net/policy.shtml#primarychannels describes in it's official policy] how projects should name their channels. They specifically outline that once we've registered a name, we have control over any channel that starts with that name and a hyphen, as I've done in the case of [irc://irc.freenode.net/hrwiki-fanstuff #hrwiki-fanstuff]. This is the recommended way of doing things, and you see it over and over again on Freenode in places like [irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal #drupal] and [irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal-support #drupal-support] or [irc://irc.freenode.net/wordpress #wordpress], [irc://irc.freenode.net/wordpress-docs #wordpress-docs], [irc://irc.freenode.net/wordpress-bugs #wordpress-bugs] and [irc://irc.freenode.net/wordpress-meetup #wordpress-meetup] or [irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia #wikipedia] and [irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia-tech #wikipedia-tech]. I'm confident that the way I've named the official fanstuff channel is the most appropriate way to do things.
+
== Oops, please revert. ==
-
:Here's the bottom line: I don't have anything against your fanstuff channel, but the only way I would ever consider attaching it officially to the Wiki is if I and the other admins had full control over it. In other words, you would need to give up control over the channel entirely. I don't have anything against you personally, Homsar999; please understand that clearly. I just want to make sure we have full control over anything we deem to be official. &mdash; {{User:JoeyDay/sig}} 22:42, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Is that $19.37 in American or Canadian? Because the original $20.73, after minus $0.30 and 2.9% would translates into around $19.37 Canadian, wouldn't it? In which case, wouldn't the ledger be skewed if some totals were in Canadian, and others in American dollars? My calculations could be wrong, but I just thought I'd ask in case it got mixed up, to nip any miscalculations in the bud. Hey, I know you may not be the one to ask on this, but I recently got a new computer and while visiting the forum, I discovered that my IP had been banned. I know it's my IP, because I wasn't even able to log in. I don't see how that's possible, because this is like only the second day I've had it, and I didn't do anything on the forum on those two days. On a side note, I tried to log in on my Wiki account (Pop_tire), and it said there was no such account. I'm not sure what's going on, and would love (if anything), just some light on what's going on. If I did do anything, I'm sorry. ----

::DeFender1031 has a point, though he might've elaborated on it further. First off, it looks as though someone has already indicated on the [[eat a lot of food alert]] page that it is under consideration for deletion. I could simply delete it, but the usual procedure is to discuss why an article is to be deleted and come to some kind of community consensus before actually wiping it out. This ensures that good pages don't get lost by hasty sysop decisions. Second, there are policies and procedures in place for deciding who to extend sysop and bureaucrat privileges to. These privileges are usually extended only when our current sysops and bureaucrats are getting overwhelmed, which, to my knowledge, is not the case at this time. Additionally, such privileges are typically extended not to those who ask for them, but to those rather quiet, diligent folks who work the hardest and seem to be most serious about making the wiki a better place. Believe me, notice is taken of hard workers with apparent leadership skills and, assuming you fit the desired qualifications, you will be considered without needing to explicitly ask. Lastly, I should note that it has been some time since I've had an active presence on this wiki. Administration of this sort of stuff has been handled by others for some time now. I'm not suggesting you should contact someone else directly about this, for that would still be inappropriate. I only mention this to say that I'm definitely the wrong guy to ask these questions of. My role around here of late has more and more to do with the finances and administrivia dealing with domain registration and server leasing, and less and less of things like deleting pages and extending privileges. Hope this is helpful. &mdash; {{User:JoeyDay/sig}} 21:29, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

A way you can register domains is by maybe creating a section of the FellowSites signup page that links to a script that can add website names to your Hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts). I've tested it on my computer and it works flawlessly. --{{User:Y2K/sig}} 09:01, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

could you help
+
:True, it'll work for ''you'', but it means anyone ''else'' who you try to direct to your site, you'll have to get them to set up the hosts file first... which isn't going to happen, they just want to click a link and end up somewheres. If they have to download and run something just to view your site, they're not going to (not to mention that you'll set off "potential virus" red flags in the mind of the viewer). Also, it won't work if you have a proxy server (you'll have to install the Hosts file on the proxy itself... which most people won't have access to). In short: hosts files are fine for testing things, and for naming things on a local network (where you're able to put the file on every computer), but it's no substitute for a real DNS entry, which you're going to have to pay for, no way around it. However, it ''is'' possible to have a Fellowsites account ''without'' owning a domain name &ndash; you'll just end up with a less memorable url, like http://fsserver2.fellowsites.org/~hrwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page (NB: things like the images and formatting are broken via that link, but that's just 'cause of how the wiki's set up... it expects to be accessed via http://www.hrwiki.org). {{User:Phlip/sig}} 10:48, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

+
Hey JoeyDay,
-
:A sysop or bureaucrat can not make himself a developer. Only other developers can. The founder of the wiki is expected to pay the vast majority of the costs, if not all of them. An alternative is giving the wiki to a wiki hosting service, such as Wikicities. These providers pay the cost of the wiki and host it on their own severs, but the founder, in turn, would have to assume control to Wikicities and become a bureaucrat alone. I hope that answers your question. &mdash; {{User:Lapper/sig}} 22:42, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

How do you become a sysop, bureaucrat or admin?
-
Sory for taking so long to respond. I would say that if [[:Image:A history.PNG]] was removed from [[HRWiki:A History]] then of course the picture should also be deleted. I base my understanding of fair use law mainly on [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Fair use criteria]] where it says iamges "must not serve a purely decorative purpose" which is what that picture was doing. Also, any images which aren't linked to an article can't be under fair use need to be deleted because they aren't being used to illustrate anything. I understand you have different (more liberal) policies here and thus I will stop bothering you about this. I certainly hope you're right about this. :::Guys, really, let's keep this simple. The template is overkill. The best solution would be a MediaWiki extension that could take straight quotes (double primes) from wiki code and turn them into curly quotes automagically. There are already good engines available for blog platforms (like [http://daringfireball.net/projects/smartypants/ SmartyPants]); they just need to be ported so they plug into MediaWiki. == I got an idea! ==

:::::The quote template can be moved to <code><nowiki>{{q|Whatever you want to quote}}</nowiki></code> if need be. As for sever load  it's pretty much the same kind of load we put on our talk pages when we fill em up with sigs. Page caching usually does a good job at not putting too much load on the pages (well templates ''are'' complicated). An extension would be the most convenient way to implement this for users, however. It does have its limitations (like '' 'Twas the night before Christmas. '' as presented in the ''Algorithmic Shortcomings'' section of the [http://daringfireball.net/projects/smartypants/ site] listed above, also, depending on the robustness of the software, its possible that if there are quotes that are not closed, it will mess up all the other quotes, but then again that would be a good way to bug check! ) ...and the code would have to be ported to Mediawiki, right? Memorizing the numbers or the HTML codes is a bit much to ask for from most users. --[[User:Stux|Stux]] 19:08, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
+
-
::::::Please allow me to reiterate something I put on another page: I am a commercial printer. I would ''never'' use straight quotes on printed matter if I could help it. But here on the wiki, straight quotes look ''perfectly fine'' in the font we use. They don't take up too much space, they look good in a table or one after the other, they're easy to type and to read in code, and they don't require any special knowledge to handle. Seriously, I ask you, what is wrong with the status quo? &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 19:33, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

:::::::Unless and until we can find a solution to automagically change straight quotes to curly ones, I'm with Dot Com in favor of the status quo. There's absolutely no sense in making users learn the Alt codes or a <code><nowiki>{{q}}</nowiki></code> template. I favor proper typography, but not at the expense of ease of editing. &mdash; {{User:JoeyDay/sig}} 21:58, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Seeing as you are the founder, manager, webmaster, whatever of this wiki, I thought I'd ask you what the copyright status is of the wiki's logo (i.e. [[:File:Wiki-kb-c.gif]]). The image page says that it's a screenshot of a copyrighted web page, but that isn't entirely accurate, as it isn't a screenshot and it belongs to this website. So, do you know what the actual legal status of the logo is? Thanks, [[User:Oxguy3|Oxguy3]]. 17:36, 29 July 2010 (UTC) (Note: this edit will show up from my IP address because my current internet connection or computer has some problems staying logged in)

:The part that is a screenshot is the image of Homestar, which belongs to The Brothers Chaps. We use it in our logo at their pleasure (meaning they are aware we use it but haven't ever given us any kind of formal permission to do so; if they were ever to tell us to stop using it, we would immediately comply). The overall design of the logo is restricted to this site and (except for fair use) is not available to third parties. &mdash; [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 18:06, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Sysopness

I was just wondering for no particular reason what my chances of becoming a sysop are. I couldn't tell from the user list what the ratio of legitimate users to sysops were, because most of the users seemed to be disposable accounts and sockpuppets. Flameviper 20:16, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

First, having some main namespace edits might help... For full details, check here, as this question is asked a lot. As for the ratio, yeah, it's hard to tell. --DorianGray
It's not that hard. According to Special:Statistics: There are 7,296 registered users, of which 23 (or 0.32%) are administrators. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 21:28, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, but of those users, how many are real? How many aren't sockpuppets or blocked vandals or whatever? And any maths is hard. --DorianGray

Have a look at MediaWiki:Common.css – in particular, around halfway down, all the blocks that start with something like #bodyContent a[href ^="http://www.homestarrunner.com"]. That particular selector doesn't work in Internet Explorer, unfortunately (well, in IE6 at least, I haven't used IE7), but it does work in Firefox, and I'm pretty sure it works in Opera. Hey there, Joey. A few minutes ago I tried creating an article about the creator of my favorite wiki on Wikipedia, but now I copied some stuff from your user page and put it on there. Someone (actually a bot) said that they cannot keep this for legal reasons. Is this true? See ya,
Homestar-Winner (talk) 22:51, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, Homestar Winner, but I've deleted this article. Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion require that articles have an assertion of notability, and being the founder of a website isn't really an assertion of notability (unless the website is something like Amazon, Google or Wikipedia itself). You watch all of the little boys and girls playing with their Kick The Cheats and bringing great smiles to their faces, thinking that a Kick The Cheat would make you extremely happy, too. 1.)please delete the page eat a lot of food alert

and 2.) please make me a sysop or a beurocrat.--Wichesbrew82 20:30, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

I request that you DON'T delete the eat a lot of food alert. We must keep it! This is the first time I've talked to ya haven't I? --The 386 My talk 03:51, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

this is not the place for this discussion. — Defender1031*Talk 03:54, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
DeFender1031 has a point, though he might've elaborated on it further. First off, it looks as though someone has already indicated on the eat a lot of food alert page that it is under consideration for deletion. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 21:29, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Forbidden'd!

Lol, I love the "Forbidden'd!" page. And I viewed the source and it said I was a nerd! (Which I am) TheThin 00:34, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] FellowSites

A way you can register domains is by maybe creating a section of the FellowSites signup page that links to a script that can add website names to your Hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts). I've tested it on my computer and it works flawlessly. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 09:01, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

True, it'll work for you, but it means anyone else who you try to direct to your site, you'll have to get them to set up the hosts file first... which isn't going to happen, they just want to click a link and end up somewheres. However, it is possible to have a Fellowsites account without owning a domain name – you'll just end up with a less memorable url, like http://fsserver2.fellowsites.org/~hrwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page (NB: things like the images and formatting are broken via that link, but that's just 'cause of how the wiki's set up... it expects to be accessed via http://www.hrwiki.org). --phlip TC 10:48, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] sysop

JoeyDay, caan you please make me a bureaucrat? It would be appreciated. Dagoth 11:44, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Generally, it's frowned upon to ask to be made a sysop, bureaucrat, or otherwise. If you would like some tips on how to be the best user you can be, please go here. -Brightstar Shiner 11:50, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki 1.13

The Wikimedia Foundation have released MediaWiki 1.13. Have you considered upgrading? Dagoth 06:08, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Dagoth. If you look up a few threads, you may notice that Joey's already pointed out that he's not the most active around here anymore. It's largely other developers who handle this sort of thing these days. I wouldn't spend my time going to their talk pages about this either, though. While I can't speak for them, I can tell you that they're very on top of things, and I have complete confidence that they'll be making all needed upgrades in due time. [edit] I have a question

Hey JoeyDay,

I have a question:

How do you become a sysop, bureaucrat or admin?

I'd like to gain a title like that, as I do Gnome Work, edit pages, create userboxes, and (my most significant job) check the orphaned and dead-end pages for updates.

Do admins, like, monitor your progress then decide if you are that kind of material?

I would prefer it if you could answer my question on my discussion page, but I don't mind if you prefer to answer to this.

you can't. he chooses them few and too far...i think that's an expression. did i say it right? no? cool. anyway, you can't and when he does he picks the best users to do this job. HSB150Homsarstrongbad150Homestar Runner!! 00:43, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! I'd better just do my thing and hope that luck turns my way!

[edit] Hosting

Hey Joey. I sent you an email a while back about upgrading my hosting account to 10GB per month. It would be good if that good be implied as soon as possible. Please and thankyou. – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 08:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] I got an idea!

Do you think users could make their own blockquote class? I know I would like that!

[edit] Copyright of wiki logo?

Seeing as you are the founder, manager, webmaster, whatever of this wiki, I thought I'd ask you what the copyright status is of the wiki's logo (i.e. File:Wiki-kb-c.gif). The image page says that it's a screenshot of a copyrighted web page, but that isn't entirely accurate, as it isn't a screenshot and it belongs to this website. So, do you know what the actual legal status of the logo is? Thanks, Oxguy3. 17:36, 29 July 2010 (UTC) (Note: this edit will show up from my IP address because my current internet connection or computer has some problems staying logged in)

The part that is a screenshot is the image of Homestar, which belongs to The Brothers Chaps. We use it in our logo at their pleasure (meaning they are aware we use it but haven't ever given us any kind of formal permission to do so; if they were ever to tell us to stop using it, we would immediately comply). The overall design of the logo is restricted to this site and (except for fair use) is not available to third parties. — It's dot com 18:06, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Sysop Request

Oh hello Joey! Check me out! I want to be a sysop!

Crudfully, Cheergly (talk) · 19:32, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

JoeyDay doesn't grant sysop rights anymore. Even if he did, we're not in the market for new sysops right now. Even if we were, you'd need to meet these qualifications. — It's dot com 19:41, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
