Talk:Easter egg

From Homestar Runner Wiki

I was thinking about doing this page for some time now. In my Hebrew article there is already a section about Easter eggs and I was thinking if I should translate it back to English, or should it be the other way around? The wiki would make the article, and I'll translate it to Hebrew. What do you think? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 07:23, 15 October 2005 (UTC) wrong wiki. you meant Wikipedia, not HRwiki. hrwiki is about Homestar easeter eggs, not eggs in general.

No, we can do that to say what an Easter egg is to help describe an egg found in the H*R Universe. Bluebry 03:43, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] first SBemail easter egg?

According to the DVD commentary for depressio, the first Easter egg was a link that you got if you emailed Strong Sad. Alternatively, the first immediately-clickable Easter egg was in studying. --DorianGray

[edit] an undertaking of gigantic proportions

does anyone thinks that it would be appropriate to compile ALL Easter eggs here in one comprehensicve list? I R F 20:38, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I think that would be... Um... That is to say... Ow... My neural transmitters just shut down. --DorianGray
Actually, I have been thinking about that for some time...(But was way too scared to do it myself, or even suggest it...) I'd be glad to help out! kai lyn 20:49, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
You're help will be appreciated. You've been doing fine work so far but let's wait and see some more the of the sysops say, or at least wait for DorianGray to get off the floor and re-gain consciousness. I R F 20:51, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm not so sure if that would be worth our time. It seems like if you wanted to know what the Easter eggs of a certain toon are, you would just go to that toon's page. Perhaps a more reasonable goal would be a list of all toon with Easter eggs in them. That way people can be sure they've seen them all without giving the wiki a page that I foresee to be very cluttered and confusing. Am I alone in this line of thought? small_logo.pngUsername-talk 21:13, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree. Maybe this could be a column in User:Shwoo/All Toons, if Shwoo is happy with that. Loafing 21:23, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Yea I think that the idea of listing all eggs doesn't seem to have a point. There may be some value if there were meaningful differences in eggs (maybe first a count of how many eggs are word play gags, how many are homsar inserts, how many are continuations of the scene, how many relate to previous toons, etc.) but that's a major undertaking in and of itself, and at this point I don't think we'd find enough of a pattern or clean cut discriptions to make even that worth while. As is, a count of eggs as part of a list of all toons makes the most sense. - Ilko Skevüld's Teh C 21:39, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea to me. The main problem is that I put toons that were released at the same time in the same row.Shwoo 06:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
I just reformatted so that each toon is in a seperate row. Is listing all the Easter Eggs still a good idea? Shwoo 07:24, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Frame numbers in easter eggs

Not really sure whether this is the right place to post this, but here goes. I was thinking how useful it would be if frame numbers of easter eggs were mentioned in the Easter Egg section of toons/sbemails. It would make it so much easier to find them quickly. What do you think? BigToe7000 19:46, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't see how that's easier... I mean, how on earth would anyone know what frame is what, anyway? --DorianGray 19:52, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Dorian, when viewing in media player classic, it gives me frame numbers. That doesn't mean i think it's a good idea, just saying... DeFender1031 19:53, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, but who watches toons anywhere but on the site? --DorianGray 19:57, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
People who want to watch them in full screen? People who are doing a transcript? People who's brothers have internet but they dont? I know a guy who goes home with a cd full of HR files every so often. DeFender1031 20:04, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
That's why the SWFs exist. More or less. --DorianGray 20:06, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, and i watched the SWF in mpc. And, umm, i'm pretty sure that the swfs exist because they're embedded into the site. DeFender1031
Downloading the SFWs and watching them offline is inferior to watching them online. Not all SWFs on the site are self-contained, and some download additional files. The best way to view them with a seek-bar, frame numbers and (near-)fullscreen is the Greasemonkey All-in-one scriptLoafing 20:13, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Coming back to the original discussion: I don't think this would be more helpful. It would only help if someone wanted to see the Easter eggs without watching the toons. Where's the fun in that? Loafing 20:13, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I'll explain myself. I usually want to have a second look at easter eggs, or I miss them while watching, and when using the Greasemonkey All-in-one script frame numbers are displayed. I thought it would be useful if the frame numbers were displayed. *shrug* BigToe7000 10:08, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Also: have a look at HRWiki talk:Subtitles#Pop-Up_Video about automatically displaying Easter eggs hints, and check out this exampleLoafing 20:15, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Just looked at this and I like it! I didn't think something like this would exist.

[edit] New Image

Would anyone object if I changed the image to the scene in the process where Strong Bad discusses the Easter Eggs in his Emails? Bad Bad Guy 20:23, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, i think that the picture of actual eggs fits better, yes, though this one has three easter eggs on the screen, at first glance one would think "what does this have to do with eggs?" — Defender1031*Talk 20:29, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notable Eggs?

Hi, I was just wondering if it would be appropriate to have some notable easter eggs listed on the page--first easter egg (maybe even the first egg for each toon type?), most easter eggs, fewest easter eggs, first game in an egg, etc. etc.

And I'd like to add that my vision is 20/20 and your captcha images are almost impossible to read. — (Talk | contribs) 02:35, 18 October 2007 (UTC) (left unsigned)

[edit] Decompile

How do you decompile Flash easter eggs? -- Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 23:22, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Using a flash decompiler. — Defender1031*Talk 21:12, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

[edit] Linking in lists

We have too many pages that mention Easter eggs, but don't link to this page. Anyone else think we should start linking the words "Easter egg" whenever it appears in parentheses in a list? I mean like this:

This would be useful, and it wouldn't hurt anything. If there are multiple (Easter egg)s in the list, though, should we only link the first one, or all of them? Lira (talk) 17:25, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Wouldn't hurt, although sounds like it'd be a pain to do it manually. I'd also argue for this to be an exception to the once and only once rule, both to keep the formatting consistent and to ensure that longs lists that get rearranged or added to don't have questions of where the link should go. — Defender1031*Talk 20:25, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

[edit] Nice try, Easter egg.

I'm bringing up this edit. I must apologize because I did not understand the edit summary "even with the narrowed scope the Nice Try page is only half decompiled eggs." I brought back the first sentence because it's meant to bring the link to the Nice Try article to prominence, instead of burying items in the background. Basically saying, "there's a specific type of decompiled easter eggs listed on that page". That is also the reason why I removed the entry for Email the chair since it's a "nice try" decompiled egg. I didn't think it was necessary to replicate all the content from that page into this section. This might also apply to the Jibblies 2: "nice try dan" entry that was added. So I'm trying to make sense of the rationale behind the edit if that's okay? --Stux 22:57, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

My reason for putting the the chair and Jibblies 2 entries on this page is that the Nice Try article doesn't have the same focus: Of the four entries on that page, two are of the "Decompiled Flash Easter eggs" kind described on this page; one is a different kind of "Easter egg", so to speak, on the plush doll; and one is describing not an Easter egg but dialogue in the main body of the toon itself. I meant to explain the reason for adding the new entry in the edit summary, my apologies for not doing so. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 00:11, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you DEIDATVM for clarifying! No worries, I wasn't following the entire reasoning: for some reason I hadn't considered that not all entries in the Nice Try page would be due to decompilation. So it makes sense to have just those two entries. I've removed the line I added since I understand now that the scope of the Nice try page is not entirely within decompiled flash. Thanks again! --Stux 10:35, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
