[edit] Duplication of fun facts (references and fast forwards)

I look at bottom 10 and I note that it includes the note of the reference to english paper, the mouth diagram. I then look at english paper, and under Fast Forward is the same fact. I look at boring (really) and see that it notes the reference to lunch special, 'sbu'. But then, I look at lunch special and it's got something to that effect under Fast Forward. This, to me, is rather unnecessary and comes off as unprofessional. I don't deny the usefulness of the Fast Forward section, but excluding those which really belong under Fast Forward, like "The Cheat is Not Dead would later appear on the Strong Bad Sings CD" or "Stinkoman would later become the name of a real character", one must decide whether we have two copies of EVERY Fun Fact or whether we only have one copy of each. Of course, it's obvious that the latter is the preferable choice. As such, not only is the duplication of Fun Facts unnecessary via Fast Forward, but it's also deviation from standard form, another sloppy practice. If some manner of reform could be made, such would make the Fun Facts a little more easy to sort through. Thanks, Suicune64 23:04, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC).

The Fast Forward section of the standards say that "a fact in the Fast Forward category is something of significance in the toon that is re-used later on." If you don't think a fact is significant enough, bring it up on the respective talk page. Also, Joey might not be the best person to discuss this matter with. You might want to try Jay, who came up with the fun fact subcategories, or It's dot com, our fun fact guru. -- Tom 23:37, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)

What's unprofessional about a forward reference and a backward reference? They're not on the same page. How do we know which one a particular user will see first? Isn't it in the interest of any wiki to have more links, not fewer? — It's dot com 23:49, 2 Aug 2005 (UTC)

In my opinion, it's best to avoid clutter. And, as well, as I said, consistent policy strikes me as optimal. Also, some of these are not that significant. Taking the sbu example, for one. If Sbu were to become, say, the inspiration for a song later, then the forwards reference indeed fits the bill of some significance. But I disagree in the current instance. Well, failing that, I guess I can follow that advice, Tom... namely to dispute each individual Fun Fact. Darn. Well, I've got a bit of work tomorrow, then. Suicune64 02:04, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)
And concerning my choice of users to ask, I was asking Joey because it would seem to be a matter of policy. And, as well, I wasn't sure at the time, so I knew at least by asking Joey, if he was not the right person, he would definitely be able to direct me to the right person.
Before you flood the STUFF page, why not start at discussion at the standards talk page? Or do a test case. Speaking to your point, I really don't see how one extra line is all that much clutter. And in the case of "sbu", it's a made-up nonword, so I think the reference is justified. — It's dot com 03:47, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)
I found this to be a losing battle, some time before I worked out the Fun Facts subcategories. Originally, I thought the same thing of Forward References; that they were largely unnecessary. No one agreed. So, although I'm not terribly fond of the concept, when I split the Fun Facts, I added a subcategory specifically for forward references. However, the forward references are still split from the others. If you make a forward reference in the Inside References subcategory, expect a quick DELETED!! --Jay (Gobble) 03:52, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't see this sooner, Suicune (I'm not sure how I missed such a large thread on my talk page), but it looks like this already came to a sort of conclusion. I would agree with you about the duplication, but, as Jay has pointed out, it would take a massive grassroots uprising to change things. As already suggested, the best place to bring this up would be the standards talk page. Good luck. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:02, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Unneeded S's?

I am thinking of making a page called "Unneeded S's" To you think this page will be useful? -- TotalSpaceshipGirl3

Well, off the top of my head it doesn't sound useful at all. Maybe if you explain it a little more I'll get what you're trying to do. Bottom line is I don't decide what's best for the wiki, the community does. You may want to post this question in a more public place like the talk page for whatever category you think "Unneeded S's" should belong to. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:26, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Kinsey's forum registration

Did you get my forum registration form yet? -Kinsey

I'm not sure. What's your forum username? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:37, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)
the same. Kinsey. -Kinsey
Hm, when did you mail it? I haven't seen it, yet, but then I haven't checked today's mail. I'll keep an eye out for it, though. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:50, 11 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Where has Stu been?

Where has Stu been? Maybe this is a stupid question, but he hasn't been on the wiki ever since we changed the software. Maybe you know where he is? Happy 20:00, 13 Aug 2005 (EST)

Maybe I should let Stu answer this himself, but the simple answer is he prefers to spend his time on the forum. He's also been through some tough medical stuff this year, he's close to finishing his bachelor's degree, and he's working a couple jobs. I think he's just real busy. I'll let him know you were thinking about him, though. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 03:17, 15 Aug 2005 (UTC)
As Joey has so accurately put, I have been busy. Although, that is a bit of an understatement. I currently work 3 part-time jobs, have a wife, play Everquest 2, and I am about to start up school (13 hours of class... so roughly 25-30 hours of homework per week). To top it all off, I have had some medical problems. Stuff that I don't really want to go into (for the sake of your lunch).
When we switched over to the new wiki software I was right in the thick of everything. I just haven't taken the time to sit down and learn all of the new tricks that mediawiki has to offer. (As you can see, I have no clue what I am really doing here :)
I suppose I'll stop taking up space on Joey's page. Thanks for the concern though. It's nice to know that people care about me :) Stu

[edit] Joey, can you drop me a line?

I've been interested in contributing to the wiki project, but e-mails I've sent you over the last couple of months have gone unanswered. Seeing as how this is kind of important, let's try reaching you on your talk page. Can you send an e-mail to marc@homestarrunner.net when you've read this? We'll figure out a day/time that will work for a phone call, and take it from there. Thanks in advance, :: marc @ 07:48, 17 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, Joey! :: marc @ 08:05, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)
You're welcome. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 08:34, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] the right person

You seem like the right person to say this to. I read what you said about someone you know meeting and talking with the brother chaps, and it may sound dumb, but my goal in life is to meet the Brother chaps. (lol) do you know how i can acomplish this? I do have a sister that lives about an hour from atlanta. just wanted to point that out. Thanks! --Martin925 04:54, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Well, I've never met them myself, so unfortunately I'm not real qualified to give advice. Tom met them at a show they did at NYU. They probably do shows in Atlanta all the time, so if you can get out there that's probably your best chance. Good luck. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:10, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hosting

Hi Joey, in case you didn't see it, I've made a suggestion at HRWiki talk:Donations. Angela 20:56, 20 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I understand your wishes to stay independent. Just let me know if there's any way we can help in future though. Angela 05:53, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blockquotes

Hey Joey,I need help on the fanstuff wiki. I can't make a blockquote with Coach Z's reflection for OCE Coach Z. Can you help me? My name on the Fanstuff wiki is still the same. --H*R 700

Have you studied the blockquote.email style at MediaWiki:Monobook.css? It isn't complicated, but you'll have to convince a sysop on the fanstuff wiki to add a custom one for you. Only sysops can edit that file. Best of luck. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:15, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Selective External Links

Hi Joey, I was just wondering why the 'external links' sidebar box keeps coming and going. Right as I type this now, there's no box there for external links. But on my userpage it is there. But on the Main Page it's gone again. Is this supposed to happen? Am I just going nuts? Thanks. Thunderbird 12:29, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Bring this to Tom's attention. He installed a new version of the wiki yesterday. —BazookaJoe 13:45, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Troll Names

Joey this is bad I went on the user list trying to find suicune64 and saw a lot of bad user names delete these please. [such as threats sex terms vulgar slang and neo nazi stuff]. The former user Vile.exe

There's a good chance that most of them have already been blocked, but I'm sorry to say that they won't be leaving the User List any time soon. --Jay (Gobble) 16:48, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Jay, I can actually delete those names (and so can the other four developer admins). I'll take a look and see if I can find most of them today. EDIT: I think I found all of them. The worst ones all started with exclamation points, but I found a few other names that contained swears. Thanks for the heads up from that first user (maybe sign your posts in the future so we know who you are). — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:34, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Okay, granted. --Jay (Gobble) 20:56, 24 Aug 2005 (UTC)

I'm not that first guy, but I agree with him. There's a few more on there now. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 18:48, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Banned'd!

Why am I banned from the IRC chat? --Homsar999

[edit] Fanstuff wiki

Can you please, PLEASE, unlock the Fanstuff wiki? H*R 700

I know you can't unlock it now, but could you tell us what kind of snag you hit? Like, why will it take until Wednesday? --thatkidsam 19:04, 11 Sep 2005 (UTC)

The fanstuff is unlocked; the message means that it will stay unlocked until at least Wednesday, when they will try again to move it. — It's dot com 19:09, 11 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] FINALLY!!

JOE! JOE! It's over! I can edit stuff! You can remove the notice! Seek Bar

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but it's not over. We just unlocked the database because the first attempt failed. You're able to edit, but what you're seeing is all on the old server. If you read the site notice, it states that we'll attempt the migration again as early as Wednesday. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 02:33, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sig Question

Hey Joey, can you tell me how to edit the size of your text in a sig, or anything else for that matter, within a span tag? I looked around, and all people did was use the small tag. -- Lapper (talk)

You can use the "font-size" property. Here's an example: '<span style="font-size:10px"> ... </span>' would set the type at 10 pixels tall. Note: your signature should not be any bigger than a normal line of type. — It's dot com 04:07, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Grape-Nuts Robot

Hi Joey. If User:GrapeNuts is your bot, would you mind making some kind of edit on it logged in as JoeyDay, just for confirmation, por favor. I remember the bot you mentioned you were working on, and I just want to make sure that this is it. (On the other hand, if it's not yours, someone is making edits using your name and has some big 'splaining to do.) Thanks. — It's dot com 05:20, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, he's mine. I made a minor edit to his userpage just now. Sorry for any ambiguity. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:23, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Oh, no probalo at all. Just keeping my eyes peeled. — It's dot com
And I greatly appreciate your peeled eyes, btw. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:28, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Re: If you think you have a task my bot could perform...

Well, I see it replaces text... What other things is it capable of? Oh, and like we discussed before, User:Rogue_Leader.sig → User:Rogue_Leader/sig would be a prime candidate for one of its tasks. — It's dot com 05:37, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I made that replacement by naming the exact page I wanted to find and replace on. To do a global find and replace they recommend I have a 'recent xml dump', whatever that is. I'm floundering around in the dark until I can figure that out, but GrapeNuts first task will probably be fixing Rogue Leader's sig, as you've suggested. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:44, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
This task is done, btw, as of early this morning. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:57, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Shouldn't it be classified as a bot? To filter it out of Recent Changes? -- Super Sam

He did. Oh, and Joey, you may want to take a look at rewriting this: HRWiki:Blocking_Policy#Bots. —BazookaJoe 11:35, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Oh, alrighty then. As for the Blocking Policy, I never really saw the need for that, since only Buareaucrats (however you spell it) can make them. -- Super Sam 13:00, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure that's true. If it were, then we wouldn't have wondered about whether the so-called RC patrol bot was real or not. Either way, I put a no-brainer note in that section about bots. — It's dot com 16:01, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Just to clarify, anyone could write a bot script and (attempt to) use it. (Of course, currently we wouldn't allow bots that haven't been approved.) The scripts simply automate the process of editing, just like a regular user would do. If the bot is really good, we might not even notice that it's a bot. However, developers have the ability to mark a user as a bot so that their edits do not show on the Recent Changes page when viewed with "hidebots=1". -- Tom 18:19, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Python is my favorite programming language. Rock rock on. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 18:28, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, Tom. I've been trying to figure out the best way to articulate this since Super Sam commented above. You hit the nail on the head. Incidentally, I wasn't aware of our policy against bots and feel as though I may have stepped over the bounds of community expectation here. Do you (or anyone else, for that matter) have any qualms about me using GrapeNuts? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:32, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
No qualms here. I'm speaking for myself, but I'm confident others would agree with me in saying it isn't possible for you to overstep the bounds of community expectations when you, acting as a developer, perform maintenance vitally useful to the wiki as a whole. And I'm sure Rogue Leader greatly appreciates not having to make who-knows-how-many signature fixes himself on 209 different pages. My two cents. — It's dot com 18:46, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Well, what if I started using GrapeNuts for world domination? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:57, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
If you could figure out how to use a wiki patrol bot to take over the world, you deserve the title of world leader. small_logo.pngUsername-talk 18:58, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
And what if the sysops all started banning users who don't capitalize properly? That doesn't happen not because we can't do it but because we're trusted not to do it. Likewise, we trust you to use good judgment and not to break the wiki. Or if you do, then we trust that you'll fix it. Also, what HSR Username said. — It's dot com 19:12, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Joey! Now I just need to get used to typing / instead of . now! Rogue Leader / (my talk) 19:32, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Wait... you're typing that each time? — It's dot com
No, I use tildes. Just a slip of the tongue. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 19:43, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)
You're welcome, Rogue Leader. Glad to have been of service. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:19, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki

Hey Joey. Is it alright if I use some of your templates and stuff for my wiki??? – Pertmywert (Talk·Edits) 22:20, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Everything here is released under a Creative Commons License, meaning you're free to use it as long as you don't make any profit. Will you be making any money on your wiki? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:05, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Nope. I am with a free website hosting service so I don't need donations and all that stuff. -Pertmywert (Not logged in)

[edit] You Really Need to Know This

The user Bobo the King swore on the talk page for Commandos in the Classroom Post a line On my Tp Vile.exe

In the toon's context, how can "If Sonic can talk about "touching", "teen pregnant" seems pretty damn tame to me." be offensive? Elcool (talk)(contribs) 09:12, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Vile.exe 20:03, 29 Sep 2005 (UTC)GOOD POST HUH

I... uh... It just is!:P Well, it sounds maybe not offensive, but it isn't that innocent... if ya know what I mean? Some one help me out here? Homestramy20|Talk 09:15, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I think Mr. Bobo was just being cavalier. Outside of the wiki, I myself can cuss up a storm slightly more vulgar than "diaper biscuits", so his mildy bawdy language is no sweat to me. But it might offend someone (yourself included?) - dunno, just nicely let him know to watch the expletives. There should be no problem. THE SMOKING MONKEY 23:11, 25 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Homestramy20, I empathize with you about offensive words. We want to stay as family friendly as possible around here. If you are offended by it there are probably others who are also offended but won't take the time to speak up about it. However, a quick search for the offending word turns up quite a few pages around here. All you can really do is ask him nicely not to use words like that in the future. If you don't feel comfortable asking him, I wouldn't mind dropping him a line in his talk page myself. Let me know if you'd like me to do that for you. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:53, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
