NES Endings Trivia Challenge

12 February 2007

"MY PANTIES!"

The game is Rampage, which was ported to the NES. rampage makes reference to the game when The Cheat and Strong Mad rampage about in the Easter egg. -- Tom 06:44, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Exactly! Trey56 13:35, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

21 February 2007

River City Ransom is the game, and the email is theme party because the pink shirted enemies are frat guys. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 19:32, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Nice work — that's exactly what I was thinking of :) Trey56 23:24, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

6 March 2007

The game is Contra. Took place in the Amazon Basin. "amazon" is part of the URL for Bookazon.com which features Leomard Sportsinterviews. -- Tom 06:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Yep — as opposed to other versions of the game, which apparently took place off the coast of New Zealand. Well done! Trey56 06:11, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

This may be unrelated, but Strong Bad mumbled Super Contra in his sleep once. I think that may be a sequel or something. --Addict 2006 14:28, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Nope, not unrelated at all; that's the first sequel to Contra, and I considered using that as the clue for this one... Good catch! Trey56 15:19, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

14 March 2007

The game is RoboCop. Homestarloween Party introduced Visor Robot, who shares RoboCop's visor and the "Robo" portion of the name. -- Tom 02:35, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

That's correct — also, according to Strong Sad, the Visor Robot has a human brain, just as Robocop has some human organs...but that's stretching the connection :P Good work! Trey56 02:40, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh! So that was the connection! I knew it was RoboCop by looking at the Bigger image (it's the last scene of the movie) but it didn't occurr to me that it was the visor robot that was modeled after it :(. --Stux 14:44, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, the question was admittedly kind of a stretch on this one — way to recognize the game, though! Trey56 15:12, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you! Next time I'll just have to beat Tom somehow. If that's at all possible ;). Dude, you're quick replying. Do you sleep? Both last night and this morning (US Eastern Time Zone) you replied quickly to my notes! I know you're a native german speaker (I think Dorian mentioned that in some other talk page): do you live in Europe? Anyway, next time, I'll be ready ;). --Stux 15:25, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Sleep? What's that? Naw, I live in Chicago, and I only speak English very well — you might be thinking of Loafing, who's a native German speaker. As for being on at weird hours, that comes from the combination of being a grad student and a parent of a young child ;) Trey56 15:34, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Ah! Loafing! Yes, yes I did confuse you guys. Did I tell you that I am bad with names? Ah! Yes, I know the Grad Student part very well. I can understand the parent part. I know this is late but, congratulations! (On the parent thing). :) --Stux 15:39, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! :D Trey56 15:53, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

20 March 2007

The game is Maniac Mansion. The ending you have there is seen if you choose to shoot the meteor into space. The game is explicitly referenced in frame 792 of lackey in the Floppy Disk Container. -- Tom 19:07, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Wow, I can't stump you! Looks like I'll have to look for some more obscure games. Yep, that's exactly right — as a side note, I love it when TBC put little Easter eggs in their toons that you can only find by decompiling the Flash file (that floppy disk is mostly obscured by the black border). Good work! Trey56 19:14, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
(had an edit conflict and I just *now* noticed it.) How, just HOW do you do it!? --Stux 19:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Whaaa-donk. Click click click click click click click. This is not a drill. --Get what I mean? Why don't you try to explain this to the people here? Addict 2006 22:49, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
It's funny you brought that up — I noticed that too. It is clearly not the noise found in the NES version. Do you happen to know if it's the noise used in the PC version, or is the fact completely wrong? Trey56 22:53, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, this and Wikipedia are subject to hoaxes... I wonder though. I don't have such a thing so I don't know. Man, if only a {{verification needed}} tag existed here. --Addict 2006 22:57, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes — anyway, thanks for reminding me about that :) Trey56 23:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

27 March 2007

So, since I have nothing to lose, I might as well observe that the statue that appears there seems to be a moai, so I'm wondering if the game might be Moai Kun. Mind you, I never played it and the screenshots I'm seeing don't look very similar to what you've got, so probably not. But heck, might as well try. Heimstern Läufer 05:12, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

You're on the right track; but that's not the right game... good guess! Trey56 05:14, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Thought not, but hey, at least I could demonstrate my knowledge of the word "moai". Heimstern Läufer 05:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I would have said "Easter Island head" :D Trey56 05:17, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

The game is Arkanoid. The boss Doh behaves very much like Vector Strong Bad. -- Tom 06:06, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Yep, you're right! Can't fool you. In retrospect, I didn't know that there was an article on Moai in popular culture, although you perhaps didn't use that... Good job!Trey56 12:56, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
And in speaking Bubble Bobble series terms, and back into the infamous Bubble Bobble 2 ambiguation: Yes, Rainbow Islands has that boss and an island that makes a reference to Arkanoid (probably with deadly balls that once again kill the player instantly on contact, as it is with such games) too. --Addict 2006 23:17, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
And another game that features moais: Parodius Da (aka the "Nonsense fantasy", the first game released on the SNES). --Addict 2006 23:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
I didn't know about those ones — I'll have to play them soon! Trey56 23:56, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

3 April 2007

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the game, I believe. The toon is Pumpkin Carve-nival, in which The King of Town says "Sorry, king, but our princess is an another castle!" Heimstern Läufer 23:24, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Exactly — nice work! (and fast too) Trey56 23:29, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Not exactly,
The game is Super Mario Bros. 3. The quote is "But our Princess is in another castle" which is quoted as "Sorry, King, but our princess is in another castle..." by The King of Town in Pumpkin Carve-nival.
See marioIII-4.gif :P -- Tom 23:30, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Yes — you're right. Close enough, though :P Also, I should note that both Super Mario Bros. 3 and the KOT are referencing the original message at the end of the first seven worlds of Super Mario Bros. Trey56 23:41, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Of course. Good work Heimstern! -- Tom 23:44, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, that last bit was more for completeness than 'cause I thought people didn't know it. Thanks for playing, guys :) Trey56 23:51, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

And you know what's more for completeness? And that people don't even know?!

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

Well, I remember reading somewhere that what Princess Toadstool/Peach said at the end was different in the Japanese NES version (and even in the GBA remake, so I remember playing once). I do not wanna spaz out on every single unnecessary change, so I'll quote, from this site:

The Japanese SMB3 features a more serious Princess Toadstool. In the Japanese version, Princess Toadstool originally said, "Thank you! Finally, peace returns to the Mushroom World. The end!"

Picture: "Hahaha! Oh wait..."

As a side note:

...it is interesting to note that neither the Japanese nor English versions of SMB3 in Super Mario All-Stars are based on their respective NES versions. Instead, both games contain an amalgamation of the Japanese and English versions, with the level changes (such as the world 1-1 Fortress) remaining from English version, along with the graphic "gimmicks" (such as the suit flying off effect) from the Japanese version.

And if I must state again ("Oh no! Don't do it!!!") Oh drop that. Anyway, if I must state it again, I said that the non-joke ending was also repeated for the GBA remake. Princess Toadstool/Peach says "Thank you! Peace has at last returned to our Mushroom Kingdom!" And with that, I re-checked and it was like that.

Well, I'll have to ask you to go back to here and here. The original world names from the NES Japanese edit were mostly kept for the GBA remake. "Castle of Koopa" was kept but of course they changed it to "Bowser's Castle", in my opinion because they had to change that to fit today's standards... or something.

And if you ever play the GBA remake, you'll see they decided to add a little motion to the static pictures of the original, so that all the characters fit into the place when the freeze-frame sets in for each of them. (Get what I'm saying?)

Spoilers end here.

And so ends another ending plot expansion since the last time I stressed over Bubble Bobble and its own NES differences. Not that I'm stressing now. Really. And that's it. Hopefully I won't have to overload ending plot discrepancies again. Alright now. --Addict 2006 19:39, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Wow — interesting! I didn't know any of that! I think I like the English NES ending the best, though. That sneaky Princess! Trey56 22:19, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

12 April 2007

The game is Metroid. TBC finished it in under three hours but in more than one hour. -- Tom 04:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Yup, Quite good, quite good. And you got it in only 5 minutes! :D Trey56 04:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
While tempting, no pictures of you in a bikini are necessary. Thanks though. -- Tom 04:48, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh, the picture of me in a bikini (=S) is reserved for 0-1 second replies. The 1 second—10 minute completions are rewarded with this tantalizing treat. Trey56 04:54, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Boom tick tick tick. Look, it is impossible for something to be submitted in only one second nowadays, with the inexplicable slowdowns and the time it takes for the Save changes button to work!!! Wait. I'm gonna put something else up. Let me verify it first. --Addict 2006 23:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

And who's to say how many seconds passed when you refresh a page and your thing is there?! It would already have been 29 seconds over the limit! Because everybody's at the limit. Now if you'll excuse me... Don't force anyone to try to reply to one second because it is downright impossible in a Wiki of this stature! --Addict 2006 23:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, let me tell you that if you put in someone named Justin whose last name is Bailey... I don't want to tell you any more because you'd have figured it out, along with the other way you can get into the Board. Uh, bored. Ugh, Detroit leads 2-0 over us... --Addict 2006 23:29, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, impossibility is exactly the feature of the 1 second limit that attracted me to it! Trey56 00:52, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

User:Bigscarymike

I just want to bring to your attention that this user has a link to porn on his userpage. Additionally, he swears on one of his userboxes and makes a comment on there that makes me want to throw up. Thanks, --TheYellowDart(t/c) 23:06, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Okay, Dot com left him a message — if Mike's response to your complaint isn't satisfactory to you, feel free to calmly discuss it with him on his talk page. Talk atcha later, Trey56 00:20, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

STUFF vote correction

You have brought to my attention that a person can only accept one revision of the same fact. I appreciate it, and I have made the corrections, which you have adknowledged, however, could you please point out specifically where it states this in the policy you pointed out? Thank you. Flare 23:12, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure — it's the second-to-last sentence in the "Notes about voting" section on HRWiki:STUFF. "Revisions to facts are considered separate. You can decline the original wording but accept the revision. (You cannot accept more than one revision. Only your bottommost vote to accept will count.)" Hope this helps, Trey56 23:14, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for pointing this out. And I must say, you've been very helpful and polite to me, despite the obvious fact that I'm new here. I very much appreciate it. Thank you. Flare 19:12, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
No problem — everybody's new once — we're glad to have you here! Trey56 20:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm really sorry for...

Hey! I wanted to apologize for editing your page and saying bad things. I was just angry and I now relize that was wrong. Is there anything I can do to make it up? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Apology accepted — no hard feelings :) Trey56 21:43, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Page Creations

Do you have any idea what page to create, cuz I can't think of any. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

None come to mind at the moment — however, there'll likely be an update within the next 24 hours, and so there should then be plenty of work to do! Other than that, it's always good to work on refining our currently existing articles. Hope this helps, Trey56 23:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

signature

Is there any possible way to get an animation beside my name or a signature?Haddiman

There is — the trick is to have one that's subtle enough that people don't find it distracting (see HRWiki:Signature). But, if you find such an image, you can upload it and put it in your signature using the instructions at Help:Signature. Let me know if you have any questions! Trey56 23:56, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Please see my user page immediately. --Addict 2006 14:15, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Understandable!! Well, you should be pleased at least that this year's prank is a lot tamer than last year's, which had a lot of people fooled until April 2 hit. I thought this year's was clever, personally, and it took me by surprise :) Laters! Trey56 22:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

"Truthful comment", day 2

Okay, now can you see this? And looks like you oughta archive your talk page. But do something about the NES Trivia Challenges. Oh wait. Yes, SB has just had his funeral dirge contested. See my user page for more info. --Addict 2006 14:11, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Archive my page? No way. A long talk page is the coolest. =3 I agree with you, though, the other song they chose for Strong Bad's funeral seemed really out of place. Boo! Trey56 15:22, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, I've given up my coolness. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Trey56 06:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

NES Question

Is it Senor Mortgage? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Nope — the game is Super Mario Bros. 3, and the toon is Pumpkin Carve-nival (see here). Trey56 17:29, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey there!

I was wondering how do you delete and undelete a page? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Hey, Sam. If you see a page that should be deleted, add the {{tbd}} template to the top of the page. In an unusual case where the page requires speedy deletion (e.g., vandalism, etc.), you can use the {{delete|insert reason here}} tag. In the first case, if consensus to delete is achieved on the talk page, a sysop will delete the page, and in the second case, the same thing will happen but more quickly. You can read more about this at HRWiki:Deletion Policy. Hope this helps! Trey56 22:41, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks!!! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Also, I mean literly, how do you really delete a page like you deleted Visitation Room? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Aha. That's a restricted feature, but not having access to this doesn't prevent you from being part of the decision-making process which enables its use. Trey56 22:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Dear Trey56

I have noticed lately that you have been really a good friend to me lately. In that way, I have one thing to say. WELCOME TO THE COOL PEEPS LIST!!! I say, well done. It takes a lot of work to be on that list! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Thanks! Trey56 23:02, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

A Similar Nintendo Challenge

Hey Trey. I have been thinking for a while to start my own Nintendo-esque trivia challenge. It is not endings like yours, just hard questions from Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Metroid games, with pictures and captions. This is kinda your idea and I am asking for your permission for me to do it. Cheese puffs are great, TheYellowDart(t/c) 00:31, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Of course! No problem at all :) My only suggestion would be to tie it into Homestar Runner in some way, if possible. Laters, Trey56 01:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh, yeahs, that's right. Homestar Runner... eh? I'll try. Thanks, man! --TheYellowDart(t/c) 02:06, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
No probalo. Trey56 02:07, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

I've been meaning to rage at User:Bluebry for what he/she did to you before the slowness kicked in

But since it's been over a week, and it was over at User:Loafing/Archive1#Good riddance!, but most importantly, it's been over a week, I'd like to be on your side and throw over this Wikipedia warning. Or a tougher level 3 warning of that. But since it's been over a week, and rudeness is... discouraged, for lack of a better word, still you have to remember: User:Bluebry mis-grammared their insult. --Addict 2006 00:17, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Oh, it was all part of the April one fun. But now that you mention it, Bluebry is blocked with an expiry time of -\infty. So, I guess he'll just have to wait it out. Backwards. Trey56 00:30, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I kinda hope so, for our sakes. I'm not very forgiving. --Addict 2006 01:30, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Upgraded

Congratulations. Your my favorite sysop. Annoying question, but can be a sysop! ('_'). Thanks for listening, User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Hi! and thanks :) I don't make those decisions, but I can tell you that sysop responsibilities are usually assigned when there's more work to be done than the current group of sysops can handle. It doesn't look to me like we're currently in that situation.
Nevertheless, let me tell you that, by far, the things I enjoy most about participating in this wiki are things that any user can do — improving articles, participating in content discussions, collaborating with other users, and so on. Becoming a sysop is a goal for a lot of users, but the small set of maintenance responsibilities sysops take care of isn't nearly as rewarding as earning respect on the wiki by being a great contributor.
There is a section on the wiki FAQ addressing your question, but above that I would encourage you to enjoy trying to make good contributions rather than strive to be a sysop — it's a lot more satisfying! Hope that helps, and keep up the hard work! Trey56 01:16, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Sam's Signature

I need help with my signature. Can you help me? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Of course! What do you need help with? Trey56 01:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Getting my signature like yours a little bit. Having 1 part link to my page, have 1 link to my talk page and 1 linking to my contributions. All of them being different colors. In fact, I don't care if you edit my signature. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
The secret is located at Help:Signature#Changing the target of images' links. For example, if you wanted to make Strong Bad's head link to your talk page and Homestar link to your contributions, you could do this:
20px-update-sb.png Sam the Man Buttdance_small.gif
I also added something in there to prevent it from being broken up when it appears at the end of a line. That should get you started — you can rearrange the order of things if you want, of course. Trey56 14:03, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Looking For Assignments

Hi, there. . . I'm really looking for some way to make myself useful to the Wiki community (so I don't feel like I joined for no reason ^_^), but I checked stuff out on the Stick and everything I looked at seemed to be done already. Any suggestions? I'm primarily suited for WikiGnome activities--correcting spelling, grammar, cleaning stuff up, etc. Anyway appreciate any help you can give me. Eh! Megan 03:26, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

When I am bored, I hit the random page link in the left column, and look for ways the articles I find might be improved. Try that. And incidentally, did you sign your talk posts with 4 ~'s? It didn't appear like I think you intended. Check your settings in preferences again, be sure you have the correct page "User:Eh! Megan/sig" in the signature box. I'm guessing it's not right. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 13:06, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Eh! Megan! Qermaq's suggestion is a good one. Here are a couple other ideas:
  • Category:Articles needing cleanup — These articles need to be cleaned up, for various reasons (which should be listed on their talk pages).
  • Category:Articles for Discussion — These articles have been proposed to be merged with other articles or deleted. Getting involved with these types of discussions is a good way to find out what makes a good article and might give you some ideas of ways to improve other articles.
  • HRWiki:List of common misspellings — If you click on the links, they'll take you to any pages that contain those misspellings. I'm not sure how much luck you'll have there, but it's worth a try.
  • Lastly, there will probably be a homestarrunner.com update on Monday, so check back then and there will be quite a few things that need to be updated.
Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions! Trey56 14:11, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Featured articles

Can only sysops create featured articles? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Do you mean, select which ones are featured? If that's what you mean, then no, it's a community decision: HRWiki:Featured Article Selection. Trey56 12:57, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Can only sysops write featured articles. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Okay, I think I see what you mean. No, there's no way to be able to predict if an article will one day be featured when it's written. As you know, anybody can create an article, but featured articles are selected from previously existing articles that are deemed to have major significance to the Homestar Runner body of work. Those decisions are made at the above link. Does this answer your question? Trey56 13:18, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Close, but no. Let's say I wrote about Sports for a featured article. Can anybody create those articles or can only sysops create it. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man
Anybody can, after consensus is reached about which article will be featured at the above link. Trey56 15:43, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm Sam the Man but am in Hyperactive's profile

Hi Trey56. This is Hyperactive090. I'm actually Sam the Man at his house. Well, I was wondering, are my pages good enough to be a good page? Hyperactive090--(T) though I'm really User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man

Hello, Hyperactive090 / Sam the Man. Just so you know, you shouldn't edit the wiki from other users' accounts (see policy here). You should be aware of this, as users have been blocked for similar actions in the past.
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Are you asking if articles that you've created are good enough to be featured on the Main Page? Trey56 19:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
