First seen in death metal, Brainkrieg is a death metal band created by Strong Bad for the Teen Girl Squad comic series. The band does not seem to be very skilled: they use all of the wrong "d-e" words in their song (dentist, deli-style, De La Soul, deck of cards) and place last in The Battle of the Crappy High School Bands. Brainkrieg frequently uses the onomatopoeic phrase "jugga jigga wugga" in their lyrics, representing guitar riffs; Cheerleader seems to be a fan of this — she comes for the wuggas, but stays for the jiggy juggas. Apparently, their music is popular with rats — during the Teen Girl Squad issue featured in Homestar Ruiner, rats are attracted to the girls whenever a Brainkrieg ringtone plays.

The name "Brainkrieg" is most likely a pun on "Blitzkrieg" (German for "Lightning War"), a battle tactic used by the Wehrmacht in World War II, as well as a real-life heavy metal band from England. Here, their name literally means "brain war", although the German word for brain is actually Gehirn.

Brainkrieg released a video, "If I Don't Get Video Games...", for the Hooked on Decemberween holiday compilation album. In this song, they sound less like death metal, skewing more towards grunge or hardcore punk. The song revealed much more about the characters and their personalities: the band is fairly rebellious, obsessed with video games, and the singer has an alcoholic uncle named Edgar.

In late October 2009, the band put on a live performance from the garage of the singer's parents' house, where they played their new single, "Decomposing Pumpkins", to an audience that included Cheerleader, What's Her Face and all four Gregs. The drummer's mom did not give out good candy, so the other band members threw a decomposing pumpkin at him.

"Decomposing Pumpkins", in its entirety, was later featured as the Quote of the Week on October 22, 2009. Soon after this, Homestar Runner went on an extended hiatus, and the Quote of the Week would not be updated until exactly five years later. This means "Decomposing Pumpkins" had the longest tenure as Quote of the "Week", far outlasting the previous record holder (Strong Bad's "Garbage Disposal" song, which lasted seven weeks).

In 2019, they wrote a song for Trogdor!! The Board Game Rulebook EP called "Trogdor's Fiery Rage".
