About Me

KieferSkunk
Hi there! My name is KieferSkunk. I live in the Seattle area, I am a software development engineer in test (SDET) at Microsoft, and I am also a fan of homestarrunner.com. If you're curious to see more about me, check out my website and my LiveJournal. I am also signed up at Wikipedia and Wiktionary.

I'm Back!

(03/27/06) I'm back from my wedding and honeymoon! I am now a married man! And I'm back to the Wiki, to be wiki-awesome! Or however you say that...

We had a great time. :) Anyone interested in reading about it is invited to visit my LiveJournal and my wife's LJ - she even posted pictures!

(07/02/06) And I'm back again! This time, I was on a business trip to Asia - specifically Taiwan, China and Malaysia, for the MEDC 2006 World Tour. Again, I had a great time, but I'm glad to be back home - being gone for two whole weeks from a new marriage and a new home can be really hard on a man. :P

The Many Things I Have Been Called At Fatburger

Fatburger is a chain of hamburger joints in the western United States, and I go to one in my area on a fairly regular basis. I almost always order my food to go, so they always ask me for a name to put on the receipt. I usually identify myself as "Kiefer" (and sometimes spell it for them), and they ALWAYS get it wrong. Here's my running list of mispellings so far:

  • KIFER
  • KEFER
  • KIFFER
  • KEFFER
  • KIPHER
  • CIPHER
  • KLEEFER
  • KILROY
  • STEVEN
  • KIBURT
  • KLIFERT
  • TIFER
  • HEFER
  • KINBER
  • KEVER
  • KEYFER

On Friday, April 14th, 2006, the Fatburger I normally go to actually GOT IT RIGHT! This time, a completely different person took my order, and he actually asked me to spell my name for him, twice. I'm impressed. :) Ironically, though, the lady who handed me my order pronounced my name "Kye-fer" - a common mistake. (It's correctly pronounced "Kee-fer".)

More recently, the Jamba Juice in Bellevue called me "Jeffrey", though it's sort of understandable why this would happen - as I was giving my name for the order, the guy right next to the guy taking my order started shouting something, so my order-taker probably just didn't hear me right.

I'm a Gamer Geek!

Wilkommen bei Heimsternläufer.net. Es ist .de!

Yeah, that's what I look like. On the Great Wall, no less.

Hallo! Wie geht's Euch? Ich freue mich, daß Ihr meine Webpage besucht!

So, my name's Nat. I'm a resident of California, though I currently live in China.

I got a Master's degree in 2007 in Music Theory because I'm obsessed with classical music of all sorts, especially Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Weber, Wagner and Mahler. That, and I've recently developed a strong fascination for Delibes's Lakmé. I enjoy singing all sorts of classical music, not to mention occasionally something outside the classical repertoire (usually seems to be "Hotel California" or "Grace Kelly").

I am also fluent in German and enjoy speaking it whenever I can (as some of you may have guessed, my user name is a direct translation of the name "Homestar Runner"). Many on the Wiki believe I am German, and sometimes I wish I could tell them that I am. But it's just not the case: I was born and raised in the United States of America and have never lived in Germany.

Since I started coming to China in 2006, I've started learning Chinese, too. I'm not fluent as yet, but I get many, many opportunities to practice here in China, so many that I start to feel like my German has fallen by the wayside. China and its culture and history have become yet another fascination of mine, so I suppose I'm in the right place these days.

I used to do a couple of contests on my userpage. I haven't done them in quite some time due to time constraints and the fact that the subtitles project has made my first a bit obsolete. Here, at any rate, are all the winners of the contests, whose wins I intend to keep recorded on this page as long as the page itself continues to live:

Those who have won cupcakes in my German contest:

Y'a du boulot !

Until some time ago, I had nothing to do here. You guys are already editing and fixing everything like crazy, I couldn't follow. But when the subtitles project appeared, then...I knew my life would never be the same.
Maybe not. But that gave me something to do. So for now, I'm trying to translate everything in French. Yeah, that strange language spoken in France. Or in some part of Canada. Thing is, French aren't, for the most part, really good at speaking other languages (I'm far from being bilingual myself). I hope that translating the toons will help Homestar to make it in French speaking countries. Go Homestar, you can make it!
A mistake I do frequently is to swap the brother Strong's names. So if, while watching the French subtitles, you see a "Strong Bad" in place of a "Strong Mad", that was probably me not paying attention to what I was doing.
Oh yeah, I must tell you about that tool I made for translating the toons. It took me some time to make it, so I feel forced to speak about it, sorry. If you are a subtitles translator, who knows, you may find it useful. It can be found right here. If you like it, tell me. If you don't like it, tell me too, I won't get mad. Maybe.

Things I’m proud of

  • Stu and I went to a screening of Craig Zobel’s movie, “Great World of Sound”, when it came to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The festival always has a handful of screenings in Salt Lake, so we caught a screening at the Broadway Centre Cinemas downtown. Craig and two of the actors fielded questions after the show and Missy Palmer, who produced the film, was also there. The Chaps, both executive producers of the film, were apparently in town, but decided to catch a different screening that night. Craig and Missy were both really nice, and Craig’s movie was amazing—laugh-out-loud comedy at some points, powerful drama at others, an entertaining and educational exposé of a real scam that goes on in the music industry. One of the actors had high praise for Craig’s directing skills and remarked to any screenwriters or filmmakers who may have been in the audience that Craig is the man you want working on your project. I’m excited to see where “Great World of Sound” goes from here—crossing my fingers that it hits theaters and DVD—and really hope Craig brings more movies to Sundance in the future.
  • Due to a glitch in the html file, I was able to transcribe “Fall Float Parade” (using the swf file) before it was properly available on the Homestar Runner website. It was my first transcription in a long time and it felt a-pretty-pretty good to be back in the trenches.
  • I get my kicks pruning the Links page.
  • My wedding video blooper reel is a music video for “Circles” from the Strong Bad Sings CD.
  • I’ve carved a Bubs pumpkin (2004), a The Cheat pumpkin (2005), a Trogdor pumpkin (2006), a The Goblin pumpkin (2008), and a Homestar Runner pumpkin (2009).
  • On behalf of the wiki, I received a letter from Matt Chapman along with a small collection of original pencil sketches.

Things that annoy me

  • Knowing how to make one new line show up, and forgetting to include the code.
  • Having my edits reverted (almost always, but only the good ones. you know, the good ones?)
    • Unnecessary time limits whilst trying to edit a page which mean that my contributions never actually show up. Whether or not what i'm editing is this wiki.
    • Having a good practice edit reverted for a good reason, if and only if the person who changed it left an "rv" or an "undid revision 8675309" in the edit summary alongside the good reason. it seems like those should only be used if i've done something wrong.
    • Reverting a bad edit, and having a great edit summary, only to find out that someone else has already reverted the same bad edit i was reverting.
  • Seeing where people have inserted in Goofs or Glitches along the lines of "a little bit of the sound from the next frame plays over" when it's their computer making the error.
  • Seeing where people have inserted in Goofs along the lines of "one of Strong Bad's eyes is bigger than the other during this part." That's just TBC's attempt to make Strong Bad 3D when they only have two dimensions to work with.
    • Having to explain that multiple times.
  • Seeing where people have inserted in whatever section along the lines of "the clickable area for the back button in this toon extends far left of the back button itself." most of the sbemails in that era have that, so it's not noteworthy when they do.
  • Finding out a page doesn't exist, wanting to create it, deciding against it, then changing my mind several months or even years later to find out it has been created by then. and of course it's my fault that i didn't create it.
  • The fact that these kind of pages contain several instances right now that I feel lose a certain element of humor when they are viewed from that perspective. Of course, some of them belong there.
  • The following user box:
TOO MANY
b/c there is no such thing as too many user boxes.
  • Summer breaks (or year-long breaks or w/e)
  • Vandalism
  • My former roommate's tv
  • "Exeriouxly Forxe! Did I say that right?" No, H. Star, no you didn't.
"Exhut up and just xay your linex!" S. Bad, you didn't say "Xhut up" right either.
  • When people have a section on their user page entitled "Things that annoy me" or that same idea.
