[edit] Goofus & Gallant
I would like to include as a Real World Reference that the video is a parody of Goofus & Gallant. Though it is named after a Highlights feature starting in 1948, it used to describe a particular structure of educational films, contrasting good behavior with bad behavior. The hygiene video is clearly a parody of that style of educational film, thus I do not feel it is TTATOT, especially if worded correctly. wbwolf (t | ed) 14:43, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Goofus and Gallant is certainly what I thought of when I saw this. Heimstern Läufer

- I agree. But thats noted already. Numa Numa
- Can you provide a reference to the general style of films being called "Goofus & Gallant". I'm not disputing the obvious style and it's similiarity to the Highlight's comic, but I've never heard of this correlation as a common term. 74.136.204.2 18:55, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I believe Wbwolf has already addressed the similarities. As your only argument is "I've never heard of this correlation", I'm not exactly convinced against it. Heimstern Läufer

- The similarity between the popular comic in Highlights and the filmstrip is indisputable. However, the "good boy" vs "naughty boy" method is not unique. I simply don't see any direct reference to Goofus & Gallant in this cartoon. If it is referring to something broader that I am unaware of, please clue me in. -- 74.136.204.2 19:34, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

- Thank you for those. I did not consider it appropriate for hrwiki to coin a new phrase. I see now it is common usage, at least in the given subculture. I maintain my objection to a direct reference to the Highlights cartoon, but you have proven how the film style has repeatedly been referred to as "Goofus & Gallant" - esque. 74.136.204.2 21:05, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- It's a stretch, especially since i can find no mention on wikipedia that goofus and gallant refers to this particular style of video. — Defender1031*Talk 20:46, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- Wikipedia doesn't have ALL the info in the world... I'm okay with it so long as we're clear it's not a DIRECT reference to the comic itself. --Jaycemberween (Ho ho ho!) 20:50, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- If it's not a direct reference then it's TTATOT and doesn't belong anyway. — Defender1031*Talk 20:53, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- I thought of it when I watched the email. There has to be a pun intended... John and Gene. Goofus and Gallant? Similarities...?! Yes. --TheYellowDart—(t/c) 20:56, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- "John and Gene. Goofus and Gallant?" umm, i don't see the connection. It seems to me like "pizza and french fries, shoes and socks" — Defender1031*Talk 21:02, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- The point is it the name is applied to a style of educational film, which the hygiene video is parody of. I have tried to word the entry to be clear it is referring to a class of films, rather than a direct reference to the Highlights cartoon. If someone can find a better link, I'd have no problem with replacing the reference to Wikipedia, but that's the best we have for right now. wbwolf (t | ed) 22:09, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

you still have not shown any source that says that this style of films is referred to as such. unless you show me proof, i don't see this fact as valid. Even with proof, i would be skeptical, as parodying a style of film is very close to TTATOT. — Defender1031*Talk 22:23, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

- To mention an entire style of film is TTATOT. It's like saying that something is a parody of space shows such as star trek, bab 5, etc... — Defender1031*Talk 02:57, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- True, but this is mentioning the style of a particular film artist [sic]. It's like saying "This toon is in the style of Star Trek" instead of "space shows" except without all of the TTATOT-ness. --
Super Martyo boing! 03:16, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Also, this is not the first time that a particular style of film has linked. Notably, DNA Evidence is noted as a goof on film noir, even though it is not referencing a particular film, or Limozeen: "but they're in space!" is a parody of '70s animation. Moreover, styles of educational films are not as well known, so mentioning the connection in the article (either in remarks or real-world references; never been real clear where some pieces go) adds to the humor. wbwolf (t | ed) 03:26, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Paper's Floppy Disk
I think there needs to be a Remark about the fact that New Paper already completely shredded the floppy disk that Strong Bad threw up there during the previous email Concert. Puddl3 15:33, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Why?74.136.204.2 17:10, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well, we can't be sure what happened to the disk (SB may have just removed it, for example), so if we did include a remark, it would have to be more generic, just saying the disk is gone. Heimstern Läufer
17:12, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I see the point now, which is that the New Paper did not completely shred the disk last email, so we would expect it to still be there. I hadn't given the gag much thought, so I didn't miss the floppy in this email. I'm still not sure it's very remarkable. --74.136.204.2 17:23, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Gene's name, the acronym "TGIG" (Thank God I'm Gene), and Gene's grade of G- are all references to the letter G. Gene is not a reference to the letter G, it is a reference to Hygiene. [edit] Grown-up Headache
Clearly, a grown-up headache is a hangover, and therefore a reference to the al-key-hol. -Telamon 21:02, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Haha, that didn't occur to me when I watched it, but I entirely agree that that's the joke. As far as whether to include it, I'm afraid that it might explain the joke too much (even though I mightn't have gotten it otherwise).

[edit] Ohio State University
The following fact was added to STUFF, but there was no discussion here, and I couldn't find any diffs to the article where people were adding and deleting it. So, I'm guessing that whether or not this fact should stay can probably be decided on this talk page.
Homestar's shirt for Out of State University is very similar in both abbreviation and color scheme to those of Ohio State University.
The arguments for this fact were that (1) Ohio State University is referred to as OSU, and Out of State University is referred to as OoSU, and (2) the colors of both OSU and OoSU are red and white.
The arguments against this fact were that (1) Homestar's shirt is always red and white, (2) OSU are the only possible initials it would have, (3) "x State University" is common school name. Anything they might have used as the first word would stand a very good chance of sharing initials with some school, (4) Ohio State University is referred to most commonly as Ohio State, and (5) Ohio State's t-shirts usually have the school's logo instead of the abbreviation.
The people who were starting to vote for that fact had all declined it so far; I'm imagining that the fate of this fact can be decided simply by a talk page discussion. Trey56 21:02, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I was one of the people who declined it, my reasoning being stated in arguments against 1, 3, 4, and 5 (4 and 5 being my arguments I posted). I'm just throwing it out that I don't like this fact. --
Super Martyo boing! 21:12, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- No contest. Let's forget about the whole ordeal. 74.136.204.2 21:16, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I originally voted to decline, but I think I changed my mind. It's not worded as a refrence; it's just pointing out the similarities in the school initials and colors. I think this would go better under remarks instead of RWR.--.

[edit] Strong Bad's MOM???
I might as well start the discussion: can Gene's mom be considered a reference to one of Strong Bad's parents? Or is she just a generic terrible rich woman parent? Me, I'd say the latter. -Telamon 21:44, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nah, it's Gene's mom, not Strong Bad's mom. Don't see how it's a reference of any kind to SB's mom, if she exists or not. - Qermaq - (T/C)
21:47, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah. The film is a fictional example. The folks at EEF cast Homestar as John, Strong Bad as Gene, and some babe as Gene's mom. Or it may not even be a real person. You only hear the voice, and it obvious that it's Strong Bad's TGS-like female voice. Also, the hand looks likt it's PBTC.--.
Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 21:54, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- No way, man. Gene's mom is Gene's mom. --
Super Martyo boing! 21:56, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- But that would imply that Gene is a real person who's not just Strong Bad wearing a pink polo shirt and a blonde wig. And we did just delete Gene Strong Bad and redirect it to Other Character Variations.--.
Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 22:06, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with the casting analysis. Its Strong Bad playing a role, so he's not a different person and Gene's mother is not Strong Bad's mother. ~jeadly 16:28, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] StrongBadMan Comic
I've seen a number of the StrongBadMan comic covers on the site over the years. This one is particularly similar to the Marvel Comics covers of the mid-1990s. To wit:
- The style and font of the box with the issue number, and the price.
- The FREE in "Cheap as FREE" in the upper left has a similar height, and open lettering to the font Marvel used at that time.
- The Strong Bad face, white on black, in the lower left - which was printed in the place of the UPC symbols for issues sold directly at comic retailers. (VERY reminiscent of the style used when Spider-Man first started wearing the alien suit.

[edit] Where are the hot college girls?
This is a bit of stretch in terms of notability, but I think that Strong Bad's complaint about getting emails from a fifth grader and where are the college girls is a reference to how homestarrunner.com's audience had trended down in terms of age. One only has to look at the Wiki to see how many users are in the 11-14 age range (and us oldsters are not as common). When the site first opened, the audience was mostly in college, but that has spread over time. Any thoughts on this? wbwolf (t | ed) 23:10, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- homestarrunner.com has always been a child (family) friendly site. From the beginning, Matt and Mike are very intentional about this fact. I'm not sure that this wiki's usage can prove anything in regards to their audience. If anything they are getting older everyday. (I know I am). 74.136.204.2 02:29, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- And now I'm even older (to quote their good friends). -- 74.136.204.2 02:37, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

My cousin and his friends LOVED homestarrunner two years ago (he's like 22) then he told me about it, then i told all of my friends, then he and all his friends stopped watching it.
