This poor page is orphaned, but seems to contain very useful information. Should it be linked to from the main page like Characters and Toons? Or is there some other index page that should link to it?

First, thanks for the complements. I didn't know anyone else read my little page. When I first made it, I had it linked to the main page, but Tom moved it to the downloads section (on the old wiki) because on the main site the only list of songs is in the download section. I'd like to see it linked from the main page again, but the admins know best. -FatPamPam

Hey, what about the Peter Frampton clip from the Strong Bad secret main page? That's a song. Probably. -- Thunderbird 21:35, 10 Nov 2004 (MST)

This is a wiki. Put it on there. -- FireBird|Talk

Y'know, this page is a bit unorganized. I think I'll alphabatize it. Do you think I should do it by the title of the toon or of the song? I'll do that tonight. --FatPamPam

Done. Oh, and I added that "Poot Slap" is on the SB Room Main page, in addition to the Luau. -FPP

Sweet! It's linked to from the main page! I'm so happy!- FatPamPam

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned anything yet about the absence of 'Strong Bad's Rhythm 'n' Grammar' from local news on the Songs page. -- TheEggman

Okay, done. But this is a wiki, so you could have done it just as easily :-). Oh, well. I do most of this page anyway. -FPP

[edit] Adding Files?

I uploaded a sound file to the wiki and I put it on here, but my edit was reverted. Why? Did I do something wrong? If so, I'm sorry... Tell me what happened please :-) →evin290 13:54, 31 Jan 2005 (MST)

I second her question (if there is such a thing); why was that reverted? -FatPamPam

I left a note on the sound file's talk page upon it's removal from this page. Pretty much, as I already told you, uploading sound files such as this violates The Brothers Chaps copyrights since it isn't fair use. -- Tom 22:45, 31 Jan 2005 (MST)
Oh! I misread your response on the FAQ talk page. I thought you said "I don't see why not" instead of "I don't see why." Whoops! Sorry about that. The reason I uploaded this particular file is becuase it is a full-length song that ISN'T gettable without watching the ENTIRE toon first. I uploaded it just incase anyone wants to listen to it without watching the toon first. I understand why it would break copyright laws to upload something from the CD or DVD, but what laws would giving away for free something that was given to you for free? I want to be as helpful as possible on the wiki and I've read the rules and such. I need to know what's wrong with this sort of thing. Thank you :-)→evin290 04:47, 1 Feb 2005 (MST)
Yeah, it's not really clear cut. That's why we try to play it safe by not reproducing stuff like that. -- Tom 23:15, 1 Feb 2005 (MST)
Alright - so I'll only add download files that are downloadable from the site. Okay :-) →evin290 04:30, 2 Feb 2005 (MST)
Just remember, files that are downloadable from the site should be externally linked to. We don't want to host the files, TBC do a fine job of that. -- Tom 09:20, 2 Feb 2005 (MST)
I think that's weird too; we can use copied pictures, words, and text, but not sound. --
Hey, the "Wheat Grows Sweet" was a download from the site. It was a quote of the week a long time ago.
I used to have a link for that. I don't know why it was taken off. I just put it back on.
Perhaps I lost it when I transfered "Peasant's Quest" to the Gamses portion.

Any files that the Brothers Chaps have as mp3s on their site should be linked to directly from here. And the links should probably get their own column in the table. Who could possibly disagree with that??

What some might disagree with (but I don't) is I think it should be considered fair use if any sounds that are in a Macromedia Flash file are extracted and redistributed in the same way the Flash files are (i.e. for free) unless The Brothers Chaps object by writing us a letter. --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  16:10, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Umm

Some of the links mainly the one with technochoclate and thinkiman don't work anymore.

[edit] Thing in a Bag song

There was that one "TV Show" song from "Thing in a Bag" there ... --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  18:14, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Ooh! and the "Everybody Everybody" Christmas Remix from the end of "Oh Holy Crap" ... you know, during the credits. --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  18:15, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

i wish we had mp3s of those. --NERD42  email  talk   h²g²  pedia  uncyc  00:08, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Or better yet, OGGs. But yeah, I've been known to leave the page up after "Oh Holy Crap" letting that loop run for minutes. Somethin' about it. —AbdiViklas 05:51, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Me too. I don't know why. It's a... cute song. SaltyTalk! 05:59, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oranginaded where, again?

We've got a problem. Several of the songs under Songs that originated on "Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits" didn't literally originate there. Specifically, "Let's Get Started (etc.)" and "The Ladies In My Town (etc.)" originated in Strong Bad Sings. We never hear them, though, which makes it tricky to simply delete them from this section. They were, um, first "realized" on the cd... The Sweet Cuppin' Cakes Theme Song is even more difficult, since this could hardly be considered its "origin," but also is a new entity that hasn't been heard before. —AbdiViklas 00:03, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, what's the page standard for placement? I see that SB's "Shanama" Panama and O Canada parodies are up in the toon, but H*R's "Greatest American Hero" parody is under "Not By TBC". To be consistent, I'd suggest putting anything we know TBC sourced on other music in this way in the bottom. So upstairs is originals only, and downstairs are real songs and parodies/new lyrics. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:24, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi man, be bold. If you think some stuff need to move around, move it around. The idea of organizing a page is great, but sometimes you just have to do it. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:50, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
NP, I just wondered if there WAS any rhyme or reason before i spent any time on it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:51, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I organized the page a little differently. Whaddaya know, Haddiman? (One thing - the Wheat song from PQ - are there lyrics? Cuz it really isn't a "song" without lyrics. Everything else has lyrics or is specifically called a song. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:40, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I really wouldn't mind seeing some tablage on this page. Thunderbird 20:38, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
That'd be great, but I haven't figured that out yet! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:40, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wheat Is Sweet?

Well, "The Entertainer" doesn't have lyrics, either, but it's definitely a song. I see your point, though. I think that, since it was offered as a quote of the week, we might as well keep it on here. -FatPamPam

Actually, The Entertainer has lyrics. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
Though this could be discussed further. My point is every little tune would deserve a spot here, which isn't going to lead to any good. The Entertainer, that's a judgement call, and there certainly is an argument for and against it being a song. But the Wheat thing is a tune, not a song, and I don't think that qualifies. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:35, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
As time goes by (which IS a song), I'm more and more sure. It's available on the QOTD, and should be available on the Peasant's Quest page, but not here. I'll list it, and the Stinkoman tunes, below so they'll not be lost. Feel free to link them from other pages. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:53, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Organization

I think I've developed a good system for categorizing the songs.

1 Songs by The Brothers Chaps (and/or Missy Palmer) - these are completely original, and should be listed here and in the alphabetical section at the bottom.

1.1 from Toons - any short, feature, or other toon except sbemail.

1.2 from Strong Bad Emails - Strong Bad Emails only

1.3 from Games - Games Only

1.4 from "Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits" - obvious

1.5 Songs from the DVD - again, obvious, though music from emails probably ought to be listed above

2 Songs partly by The Brothers Chaps - this includes parody lyrics to existing tunes, collaborations, etc.

3 Songs not by The Brothers Chaps - use this when the song is used as recorded previously by someone else, or when a character sings the exact words someone else wrote.

In 2 and 3, we should try to find attributions for the parts that are not by TBC. That means the writer(s) when they cover the song. If they use an actual cut, credit the performer too.

I think that sums it up. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:15, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

And now we have tables. I did not put the TMBG concert into a table, nor the Sealab songs, as there's no point. Feel free to neaten up anything you think needs it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:54, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Oh, another thing. It seems sensible to exclude original music that has no words, as they're not songs. But we should include non-original music such as "Theme from Night Court" to cite composers and/or important artists being referenced. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:10, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I Don't Get It

I have been working on Songs By Character forever and haven't really glanced at this one. I don't understand the format here; it's different from SBC. Qermaq left a note on my talk page that I should add the song I put on the other article here (just so you know, I put 98% of the songs on that page) and on Titles too, but I'm not sure where. Could someone explain this for me? Thanks. -Brightstar Shiner 18:46, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Sure. The page is in three sections. First, completely original songs, and that's subdivided into Toons, Sbemails, etc. Most stuff will go there. These are also (generally) the songs that end up in the Songs By Title and By Character pages (though I don't think that's a hard and fast rule). The second section is for songs which are not entirely TBC original, be they parodies, collaborations, or the like. The third section is for songs which are not at all written by TBC, though they might be sung by a character. Does that make more sense? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:04, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. Before, I was thinking, "What the crap?! This makes no sense to me, so I'll post it on the talk page and hopefully Qermaq will explain it." And you did! Horray! -Brightstar Shiner 20:20, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Easter Egg Songs

I've been noticing that we have been putting up all of the (few) songs in Easter Eggs. In ghosts, after you kill the bad graphics ghost, Strong Sad sings the "Ghost of John" song. Shoud we put this up?--Strong Rose 00:50, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

It's already listed, under Songs not by The Brothers Chaps. --phlip TC 01:15, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Oops. ':) Sorry. I didn't look hard enough. My bad. --Strong Rose 21:34, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] It's Over... Again

There have been TWO "It's Over" songs now. Should we distinguish them? --Jay (Talk) 19:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Of course. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:03, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 200 Emails

This should be listed, but would it be in the "partially by" section or the "not by" section? I'm leaning toward guessing that, as usual, TBC wrote the lyrics and TMBG did the music and performed it. But this is just a guess, of course, albeit an educated one. Who agrees/disagrees? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 21:38, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, why isn't it there? Dungeonman262 10:21, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Baddest of the Bands & Fan songs.

Can we upload music from SBCG4AP or songs about Homestar done by fans? I have mp3s I made from walkthrough footage of Food Related Love, Limozeen Is Not Very Nice, & even Two-o Duo.

No, you can't upload music from Homestar Runner on the wiki... it's a violation of copyright (as has been mentioned above). This goes even more so for songs from the CDs and SBCG4AP, which you have to pay money to get access to. As for fan-created songs, they don't really belong here anyway. When the fanstuff wiki returns, you will probably be able to put them up there instead. --phlip TC 04:52, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
To back Phlip up, as a music professional, yes, copyright law is extremely strict in this vein. Unless we have license to the audio in question (which we could acquire if the need existed), we in no way have any right to host it or even link to it. I'd argue that even mirrors are arguably against the letter of the law - though TBC would need to find it worth their while to raise a lawsuit, and I hope the happy cooperation we share dispels any motivation for them to go that route, so we better not push it, like at all - but putting any of their content which you can get from them in some way upon our server for unaccounted download is absolutely not acceptable. They are legally in control of their own intellectual material, they get first rights as how users can access their stuff, and that is one of the basic tenets of this wiki, as it happens.
(DISCLAIMER: I am not a legal professional, but as a music professional I claim to have dealt with this far enough to know the law. Trust but verify.) Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 09:41, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] QoTW

Should we mention the Stinkoman Level 1 music remix on this page? If so, where? --free 20:53, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dangeresque 3 (SBCG4AP)

What about in extended play in Dangeresque 3 when Homestar sings "Billy Jean is not my Lover"?

I think that's very important because it's one of at least two Michael Jackson references. And, since MJ died, I think it's important that we find a place to put that.

[edit] Background Music?

"Music" redirects here, which I think is really unfortunate. There's a wealth of original background music in the Homestar Runner body of work that really ought to be cataloged somewhere. I propose we create a "Background Music" page, listing pieces of background music and which toons they appear in; and have "Music" be a disambiguation page between "Background Music" and "Songs". — Plastiware (Talk | contribs) 13:54, 31 August 2012 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Good idea. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 19:25, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Now that most of the background songs have official titles, they might not need a separate page after all. We can probably just document them with the rest of the songs. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 20:06, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

[edit] Respek Knuckles

I added a Wayback Machine mirror for the mp3 of "Knowledge Hat," but there is currently not one available for the mp3 of "Respek Knuckles." Is there any other way to retrieve a mirror? --JohnnyLurg 13:27, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

[edit] Sortable Table

We currently have three songs pages, and it's difficult to update and maintain all three. Would it be possible to create a sortable table for this page, eliminating the need for extra pages? They could be sorted by title, source, toon type, and character. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 05:52, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

I'd be more for trying to figure out the difference between Musical Moments and songs proper, so we can sort them out between the pages. Just like how I'd also like to decrease redundancy between cheating and bad sportsmanship; put all the cheating on its own page and leave the other only with examples of being rude or violent. 00:08, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
That's a good idea too. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 05:50, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
...I have no idea how to respond to that. I'd sort them myself, but I don't know if I can without consensus for guidance. (No one's given a set guideline on the difference between an official song or a spur-of-the-moment jingle, and my previous attempts at culling cheating out of bad sportsmanship were reverted). Meanwhile, on your end, I know you're pretty good at organizing large quantities of information. The only reason I can see for the redundant page system is so that readers could look up a particular song or a group of related songs, if they haven't used the search function for that purpose. It would be easier to put all that information in one spot, but I wouldn't know how to design the table and organize all the different factors. That's all you. -- 02:56, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

[edit] Streaming Category Name

I was going to make a category for albums available on streaming services (Strong Bad Sings, Rulebook EP, Hooked on Decemberween, HSR OST Volume 1-3), but I need a name first. Albums? Albums on Streaming Services? Music Streaming? And should individual songs be added, or just albums? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 21:11, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

We need a central page for Strong Bad's music streamins, where we can have a gallery of the albums he's put out, his profile picture and artist bio on Spotify, etc. I have a draft of something similar in a text file. Maybe we could call that "Strong Bad (artist)", and the category "Albums by Strong Bad"? I don't think we should lump albums and songs in the same category, but maybe we could make a subcategory of Category:Songs for songs on streaming services. Lira (talk) 22:40, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
"Strong Bad (artist)" seems to imply a separate character. I propose the title of "Strong Bad (streaming profile)" — same character, but in online profile form. "Albums by Strong Bad" would be easy to confuse with regular Strong Bad, so maybe we can just name it "Albums", and make that a subcategory of "Music on streaming services" (capitalized or otherwise), and make that a subcategory of "Songs". Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 20:02, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Also, the new Homestar Runner Original Soundtrack category would be a subcategory of Albums. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 02:43, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
A new albums category has been created. --Stux 23:38, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
Great! Should we still make that "Music on streaming services" category I mentioned earlier? And Lira, do you still have that "Strong Bad (streaming profile)" text file draft? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 19:02, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
{boom mic hits head} OH! Yes, I still have that draft and I just dumped it out in the sandbox for us to work on. I wrote it back when only three albums had been released, and I was only focusing on the Spotify profile, so it'll need some expanding and maybe a little genericizing. Lira (talk) 04:49, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

[edit] Table Redesign

I've noticed that this list isn't quite as well maintained as others like it; since the information is so plentiful and scattered across the body of work, it isn't as easy to compile as something like Strong Bad Email By Sender. Any edit to Songs should be duplicated on Songs By Title and Songs By Character, but this is often forgotten, leading to some inconsistency between these pages. Making the same edit on three separate pages is just a bit more of a hassle than it needs to be. That's where my redesign proposal comes in!

It only lists a few songs right now, but hopefully you get the idea. One of the first things you might notice is the additional table columns — the table now displays not only the song's name and origin, but also its singers, the date of its debut, albums and collections it's on, and links to stream or download it. Also, the tables are now sortable. However, the main difference is how it's structured internally, using templates to keep information consistent between different pages. The entire table of songs is contained within the songslist template, and this template's first parameter limits which songs are displayed. Some examples:

 • toons would display the first table on the Songs page (songs from toons).
 • For Songs By Title, A limits the table to songs beginning with A.
 • Strong Bad displays a table of songs sung by Strong Bad, for Songs By Character.
 • The new format also makes it easy for additional pages to be created; for example, a potential "Songs by Chronology" page could use 2000 to create a table of songs from the year 2000.

Internally, each row of the table is formatted using songrow. The table layout isn't final, and I'm very open to any adjustments and critiques. Should I start expanding and implementing it? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 07:29, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Assuming the full list would work the same way the sandbox seems to, this could be a good way to simplify the songs pages. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 11:27, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Hey Gfdgsgxgzgdrc, sorry to bug you, but could you explain a little bit about how the templates work? Or at least confirm my understanding: the songslist template contains all the songs known to man made for the H*R body of work. Each entry is handled by the songrow template. If songslist is called with no parameters, it returns everything. If songslist is called with a parameter, it passes that parameter to each songrow entry; the songrow template then decides if it should show that row if the parameter matches any of the text in the row itself? Is that about right? --Stux 15:15, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Yep, that's pretty much how it works! To explain further, this is how entries are formatted within the songslist template:

{{songrow|{} <!-- this is the parameter that's passed from songslist -->
|source = Toon of origin
|title = Song Title|S <!-- first letter for Songs By Title -->
|category = toons/emails/etc. <!-- this parameter is just for dividing sections, and does not display as a column -->
|char = Singer
|char2, char3, ... char10 = Additional singers
|date = Monthuary 38th
|year = 1987
|albums = Homestar Runner Original Soundtrack Volume X
|links = Songwhip, download mirror, etc.

If the first parameter is empty or equal to {source}, {category}, {year}, any of the {char} parameters, or the first letter of the title, that row is displayed. Also, I've realized that while this template can change which rows are displayed, it can't change the order within a table. So, if songs are to remain listed alphabetically on Songs By Title, each section on the other two pages will also have to be listed alphabetically as well. And if something like a Songs By Chronology page is created, the reader would be required to sort the table by date to see the actual chronological order. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 01:43, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
