[edit] Deletion

Most of these phrases are barely ever used. Holy Crap is'nt seen much more, and I believe it's mentioned a lot on Crap. Bluebry 22:45, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I could give this page a chance. It would need to be fixed up quite a bit though. — It's dot com 23:12, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, I'm afraid this page will be the subject of much snowballing and revert wars. Just what is a "Catchphrase" is really a matter of opinion. Thunderbird 00:35, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Dot com. The way the appearances are listed needs to be fixed up, but it does seem like a good page. — talk Bubsty edits 00:46, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I'll get right to work!!!!!! Lopp3

I'm inclined to go with Thunderbird. How many times does something need to constitute it being a catch phrase? And what seperates something from being a catch prase/slogan/motto, etc.? Catch phrases can be interpreted in many different ways. - Super Sam 09:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Catch phrases are something that is said repeatatly until it became popular. The problem with most of the phrases here (exept "holy crap") is that they became popular without being repeated. This page is full with point of views and will casue much arguments over what, and what not should be included. I say delete. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:23, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[Delete] None of the characters actually have consistent catch phrases throughout the series. These quotes appeared once, maybe twice. — Lapper (talk) 13:13, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[Possibly keep] I agree with Dot com. This article might be worth keeping if it's cleaned up a bit. some of the things on here just aren't catch phrases. But I don't think it's true at all to say that none of the characters have catch phrases. Heimstern Läufer 19:06, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm workin on it as hard as I can, but I'm working on the big project of Strong Bad's Technology as well. Soooo...give me a little bit of time, as SB's technology has a lot of formatting to be done. Lopp3 (Who can't figure out how the **** to work his sig.)
[Keep] I think that this page needs a major cleanup than a delortion. But otherwise, I think that the information seen here is pretty useful and relevant. So yeah. teeeffoh! 00:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
[Possibly Keep] This page has potential. I wish I had the talent to make it better. Perhaps if it was deleted and restarted from scratch? — Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 03:47, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm trying to get an image, but I can't get an SWF file saved on my computer. Still need time and help. · · T2|Things 23:06, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Delete, for the reasons listed above by Lapper. —FireBird|Talk 12:02, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Huh. The page is MUCH better, however, I feel it may go against Once And Only Once. Neutral. But, if it is determined to be deleted, suggest merge the catch phrases, slogans, and mottos to the character's/companies' pages. Bluebry 15:25, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bubs

He said "Tht'll be five dollars" in pom pom - that's not "numerous occassions". Anyone know of others? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:05, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Sample of Style and Store Thank You Messages. Hey, if this page is going to be kept, we should replace "numerous occassions" with ALL the "occassions". Otherwise, it seems like we're not trying. It's like we're saying "Yeah, he probably said 'Holy Crap' a couple of times but we can't be bothered to tell you when he said it. Now go away." – The Chort 15:11, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] appearances list

I was thinking of re-arranging the appearances list so that it looked something like this:

[edit] Appearances

[edit] Homestar Runner

  • Seriously - (list of all appearances)
  • Some other catch phrase - (list of all appearances)

[edit] Strong Bad

  • Holy Crap - (list of all appearances)
  • Some other catch phrase - (list of all appearances)
Naturally, the (list of all appearances)'s will be replaced with a list of all appearances, and the "some other catch phrase" will be replaced by a different catch phrase, if there are any.
Is this fine with everybody? — talk Bubsty edits 01:14, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Good with me, and it's my article. Time for a revamp. · · T2|Things
Well, it has been done. Needs A LOT of work and a picture, but I think it may survive now. · · T2|Things

I think we no longer need the to be deleted tab. It just need cleanup now. · · T2|Things

[edit] Picture

The image is a jpeg. I converted it to png, but it's a lit bigger. Should I upload that and orphan the current one? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:54, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Abso-posi-lutely! Bluebry 01:55, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I meant to type lot bigger, not lit. Same answer though, right? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 02:10, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm very sorry about the jpg. I'm having trouble getting .png files. · · T2|Things

DOn't worry! It's just, I've always been told to use pngs here. Man, I've gotta fix one of mine, too. ;-) ACupOfCoffee: Yeah, you probably should.

Nev mind. Just got it fixed. I can't believe I didn't change it in the first place, even though I had to use Paint Shop Pro to crop the image anyways. · · T2|Things

[edit] Merging from Cheesing Off

Isn't "cheesing off" a common phrase? Has Matt? (talk) 23:35, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

I've certainly heard it before, H*R aside. --Jay (Talk) 23:36, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Then, should it be on Catch Phrases? If not, suggest merge with Catch phrases. The signature, please bring this email to a close. Bluebry 23:39, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm... Catch Phrases seem to be catogorized by character... how would this work out on there? If we were to, reogranize it then maybe... Bluebry 23:49, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
We could make a "Miscellaneous" section where we put phrases that more than one character has said. Has Matt? (talk) 23:53, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Great idea! All for it. Bluebry 00:04, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Second'd I like the idea of merging. Sbmaniac 19:01, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Thir'd Really a great idea. It would also not make this a stub.--H*bad 04:49, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup

Some of these aren't really catch phrases and others are variations of similar ones... i think i'll re-organize this page removing the ones that aren't and putting the ones that are variations as sub-bullets. Any objections? — Defender1031*Talk 00:27, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Great minds DO think alike... I was looking at the page and said to myself, "Some of these have only appeared in one toon/are variations on other catch phrases. I think I'll notify the head users about my plan to delete one-timers and sub-bullet variations on the talk page." And what should I see but a message left by another user with the EXACT SAME INTENTIONS!!!!!

[edit] Strong Bad is swearing

I thin that i swear is his catch phraseLucsar 02:27, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Um... Are you saying that you think "I swear" is one of Strong Bad's catchphrases? No. I've never heard him say that. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 02:31, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] So needs its own page

Why is "So Good" here? It really merits a page. If anyone else says so, by all means I'll make it. --Jellote 20:55, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

What more is there to say that's not already on this page? — It's dot com 20:59, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
I agree. There's nothing more to say about it. It fits here nicely. --TheYellowDart(t/c) 22:26, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] What counts?

So i mentioned it a couple years ago, but nothing was ever actually done. There's no clear rule as to what counts as a catchphrase and what doesn't. At the moment, it seems to just be people adding fun quotes and hoping they stay. This is not a good system. We need to define what counts as a catch phrase, and then remove those that don't. Anyone know where to begin a discussion as to what counts? — Defender1031*Talk 21:57, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

I think we should have only things that are repeated in a later toon and variations thereof. So "my stupid baby brother" would be out. DEI DAT VMdatvm center\super contra 22:03, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
And what separates a catch phrase from just something that was said twice as a running gag? — Defender1031*Talk 22:08, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Basically, nothing added today counts, and I removed the remainder. That leaves the question: Do we make a cutoff for how many times something must be repeated? Even then, we have cases where things AREN'T repeated (much if at all) but are called or treated like catch phrases; "That's bupkis!" being a prime example. --Jay (Talk) 23:40, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Exactly. There are cases where stuff IS repeated that doesn't make it a catch phrase (ex: anything involving the phrase "terrific athlete") and there are things that are never repeated that are clearly catch phrases (ex: "Look lively!") I don't think the criterion is related to reuse. But then, what IS the criterion? — Defender1031*Talk 23:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Also, does "Made from the best stuff" really count? It's a slogan, not a catch phrase. But according to some definitions, a slogan and a catch phrase can be the same thing. Also, if it DOES count, then why shouldn't "drink in that bun!"? So what makes a catch phrase a catch phrase? — Defender1031*Talk 00:28, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
That one's easy enough to answer. A catch phrase should be tied to a character, not a product. So "Drink in that bun" is tied to the Sog Dog, not Coach Z. Not a catch phrase. On the other hand, Marshie is pretty much defined by being the creepy mascot of Fluffy Puff Marshmallows, so it's not unreasonable to consider the Fluffy Puff slogan to also be his catch phrase, given that he says it frequently enough. --Jay (Talk) 00:33, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Okay, bad example. Still, questions like this are what need to be discussed, and i think we need to have a comprehensive definition of what is and is not a catchphrase. — Defender1031*Talk 00:37, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

No, no, I get that. I've been trying to come up with a definition, but the problem is... it's kind of hard to define. The best I can come up with is a long list of things that should flag the listener that something's a catch phrase (used repeatedly in unusual contexts, contains an unusual word, complex enough that it's noticeable when it's repeated, called a catch phrase by the characters themselves), yet all but the last of those can be corrupted by noticeably non-catchphrasey examples. --Jay (Talk) 00:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Oh, hello.

I think we should add Homestar's "Oh hello" line. I heard him say that more than once. weirdalinstrongbadia

[edit] Homsar

Should we add Homsar's line "I was raised by a cup of coffee"? I know it wasn't actually said by him, but it got its own mug and t-shirt. -- Mml554 talk 17:31, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Not a terrible idea, but I lean toward no— it's not a catch phrase if the character doesn't say it. SRMX12 (talk) 18:47, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
