"I'm a video game!"

The Brothers Chaps have made numerous references to Mario, one of the most famous video game series of all time, in the Homestar Runner body of work. This list not only includes character references, but also sound references heard in (and even associated with) the series.

Additionally, some animations are made using the 1992 game Mario Paint.

• Super NES — The page title, "Super Homestario Bros.", is a reference to Super Mario Bros.
• Pumpkin Carve-nival — There are several references to the Mario body of work, especially Super Mario Bros.:
  • The King of Town's Halloween costume is Mario himself.
  • Bubs's Halloween costume is Captain Lou Albano, who provided the voice of Mario on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, a cartoon TV series based on the games.
  • When the King of Town learns that his pumpkin entry in the contest receives a "worst place" prize, he laments, "Sorry, king, but our princess is in another castle." This refers to Super Mario Bros. in that, up until the final castle (in level 8-4), whenever Mario saves the Toads from Bowser in the castles, they always say to him, "Thank you, Mario! But our princess is in another castle!"
  • The Super Kingio Brothers Easter egg spoofs the title card, level 1-1, the game over screen and music, the overworld theme, and the death jingle from Super Mario Bros.
• Email japanese cartoon — One of the NES endings in an Easter egg is the ending to Super Mario Bros. 2.
• Awexome Cross — The sound effects for jumping, crashing and collecting buxx are taken from Super Mario Bros. The jump sound is the solid block hit sound, the crash sound is the block-break sound, and the buxx collect sound is the coin collect sound.
• Email mile — During the parade for The Cheat, the rhythmic "song" heard is from Super Mario Bros. 3, which is played during the airship levels. Also, the exploding fireworks sound effect sounds like the sound effect created by the cannon fire and exploding Bob-ombs from these levels.
• Email pom pom — When Pom Pom is pounding Strong Bad, various sound effects from Super Mario Bros., such as the "coin collect" sound and the "1-Up" sound, are heard whenever Pom Pom connects.
• Duck Guardian — The falling robot heads resemble the original Thwomp, and the eggs resemble those of Yoshi.
• Email comic (DVD commentary) — In the Easter egg, Matt and Mike first mimic and then make reference to the 1-Up sound made by the green mushroom powerups in the Mario series.
• Stinkoman 20X6 —
  • "Firey-Hot" is a recolor of the fire cannons' blasts in the airship levels of Super Mario Bros. 3.
  • "Old Sage" looks similar to the spikes in the moon level of Super Mario Land 2.
  • "The Liekand" looks very similar to Fryguy, the World 4 boss from Super Mario Bros. 2.
    • The fact that The Liekand turns into a mouse may be a reference to Mouser, another boss from Super Mario Bros. 2, who is also a mouse that also wears sunglasses.
  • Many NES games featured the letter 'P' (presumably for "Power") in various forms, such as the P-switches, P-Wings and P-Gauges in Super Mario Bros. 3. This may explain the collectible Ps in Level 3.
  • The name for Level -0 is a reference a glitch in Level 1-2 of Super Mario Bros. in which walking through a wall will lead to a Minus World.
  • The enemy Yekop's is "Pokey" spelled backwards. It resembles its behavior, and the Stinkomanual description also implies it is based on Pokey.
  • The ending credits, showing all the enemies in the game (except for the ones not covered in the Stinkomanual, like the octopus enemy in Level 9), resembles the ending credits of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World.
    • The fact that not every enemy in the game appears in the credits, like said octopus from Level 9, could be a subtle reference to how not every enemy from Super Mario World, most notably the Ninjis, appears in the ending credits.
    • Harvax being depicted in the credits as actually being an octopus instead of a robotic gangster in the actual game (due to the credits being based on the Stinkomanual's descriptions) could be a subtle reference to the Birdo/Ostro error in Super Mario Bros. 2 instructions manual and ending.
    • Mecha-Trogador, the game's final boss, winking at the camera at the end of the credits resembles Wart, the final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2 doing the same thing at the end of that game's credits.
• Store Thank You Messages — The page title, "Thank you so much for to buying our crap!!", is a reference to the Super Mario 64 ending, where Mario says, "Thank you so much for to playing my game."
• Teen Girl Squad Issue 10 — Tompkins is evidently playing a Mario game on his Game Boy. When So and So invites him for some rebound action, Tompkins dismisses her invitation and says that he has "Bowser on the ropes". A Koopa shell then pØwns So and So.
• Halloween Potion-ma-jig — The Cheat's Halloween costume is Mario character Toad. The high jump he does is the same one that Toad does when he gets hit in Mario Kart 64, in which Toad's kart also lands with a POOMP. The Cheat also makes some sounds similar to what Toad says when he wins a race ("I'm the best!") as well as Toad's cries when he has been hit.
• Sbemail 150?!? — One of the storyboards of Strong Sad's email idea involves Homestar wearing a Snifit mask. Snifits are a recurring Mario enemy, debuting as one of the henchmen of Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2.
• Email retirement — When Strong Bad discovers the Lappy close by, the dramatic music heard during this scene is reminiscent of the boss music from Super Mario Bros. 2. Likewise, Strong Bad scrambling back and forth under the Lappy is likely a reference to Donkey Kong 3.
• Fan Costumes '06 — In a picture of a Homestar Runner costume, a person is seen dressed as Mario in the background. Additionally, the person wearing the Homestar costume can be seen inside its mouth, prompting Strong Bad to ask if Homestar ate Luigi, Mario's brother in the Mario body of work. After giving an affirmative response, Homestar remarks that Luigi tasted like mushrooms, referring to the mushroom powerups that appear throughout the Mario series.
• The King of Town's Very Own Quite Popular Cartoon Show — The King of Town calls his servants Beezos, which are one of the henchmen of Wart in Super Mario Bros. 2.
• Teen Girl Squad Issue 13 and subsequent appearances of Peacey P — Peacey P frequently calls people "biscuitheads", like Luigi does to Iggy Koopa at one point in the Super Mario Bros. movie.
• Strong Badia the Free — The egg in Cave Girl Squad resembles a Yoshi egg.
• Most in the Graveyard — Strong Mad's Halloween costume is a Thwomp, a recurring enemy in the Mario line of work that originated in Super Mario Bros. 3. Twice during the toon, Strong Mad jumps, and when he lands, the ground shakes, further referencing the enemy his costume depicts, which also falls down from the castle ceiling and hits the ground, shaking it on impact.
• 8-Bit is Enough —
  • Strong Bad climbing a beanstalk to a smiling cloud on the Awesomeness screen refers to the cloud stages of the Super Mario Bros. series.
  • When Strong Bad first enters Peasantry, he assumes hitting his head on things will make coins come out, a reference to the theme of making coins come out of blocks by jumping into them in the same series.
  • The bushes with eyes in the intro screen refer to Super Mario Bros.
  • The music and appearance of the ghosts haunting the House of Strong (particularly the ghosts flying out the front when outside) is reminiscent of the ghost houses in Super Mario World.
• The Homestar Runner Enters The Spooky Woods — Pom Pom dresses as Burt the Bashful from Yoshi's Island.
