[edit] Firebert Vs. Trogdor

The Cheat does not receive any visitors until he replaces "Firebert" with "Trogdor". It is strongly implied that his initial unpopularity is due to the name "Firebert", which was criticized in army and again in Shopping for Danger.

Arguments for:

  1. It may not be immediately clear to the viewer what the significance of Firebert's lack of popularity is, without knowing this fact.
  2. It explains the joke for people who have not watched "army."
  3. RE Args Against 2 and 3: We have a strong precedent for adding Inside Reference facts to articles where a joke is extended between two or more toons. This doesn't so much explain the joke (read: ruin the joke) as it does explain how the joke is relevant, and also directs people to "army" in case they haven't seen it and don't already know what's going on.
    • This differs from, say, explaining the joke about how there was parsley in Homestar's mouth before he read Strong Bad's message about it. That all occurs in the same toon and needs no further explanation in order to be funny and meaningful.

Arguments against:

  1. Apparently, this is not a clear reference to "army", even though there are many other references to the same email within this one.
  2. Anyone who has seen army would immediately see the reference to The Cheat's commando name. The rest of it is just speculation.
  3. RE for argument 1: Yes, it explains the joke.

Additional comments:

  • Trogdor is popular and Firebert is not. That's why The Cheat changed Firebert to Trogdor.
    • Yes, but WHY is Firebert not popular? You won't know without watching "army".
      • SPEC-U-FREAKIN'-LATION. Firebert's name might not have a thing to do with the fact that he's unpopular.
        • I disagree that it's speculation. Previous toons (army and Shopping for Danger) have all but spelled out that Firebert needs to change his name. The implication is that if he doesn't, he'll be the low man on the totem pole, and he'll be unpopular. So I don't see it as much of a stretch that The Cheat would be unpopular with the name Firebert. (Note: I can't argue that Trogdor is more popular - that's obvious, and it would likely still be true even if everyone loved Firebert's name.)
          • I know it's been mentioned before that "Firebert" is a bad commando name. I'm just saying that might not be the reason for his unpopularity.
            • Look at the scene in Shopping for Danger, it's heavily implied in that one (in fact, this should be part of the fun fact).
              • I agree, and thus the fact has been reworded as such.

[edit] Oh, check me out, it's in back of my head!

Strong Bad's head is behind The Paper when he comes back to look at it.

Arguments for:

  1. There probably is limited space between the Lappy and The Paper. How could he fit his head there?
  2. If he's talking about the Paper, why whould he stick his head behind the Paper?

Arguments against:

  1. He heard the noise and saw it from off screen. He just comes back to talk, not to look.
  2. Strong Bad's head has been behind The Paper ever since the days of some kinda robot.
  3. Someone sugested that the printer was attatched to the camera, to say why it's never seen. Then, this limited space would be between the lens and paper.
  4. Regardless of where the printer is or what it may or may not be attached to, I think Strong Bad is looking at the printer. As i said on the discussion page of the original, if your printer shot out a mangled paper and made a bad noise would you look at the paper, or the printer?
    1. He's actually still looking at the screen in this case - his graphic hasn't changed at all when he pops back into the frame.

Additional comments:

  • If it's been that way since the very first email, I don't see why it's suddenly notable now.
    • Has it actually ever been clear-cut before? The Paper is almost always too far above whichever character is pictured for us to be able to see whether the character appears in front of or behind it.
  • Argument against #3 is speculation, especially since characters have been known to look up at or even tear down The Paper.
    • Nobody tears down The Paper in autobiography. Was that what you meant to link to?
      • Strong Bad tears down The Paper when he prints the email.
