Biography

Homsar is a strange character, created from a typo of "Homestar" by fan Vinnie C., who in the second Strong Bad Email asked why not, if Strong Bad hates him so much, kill "Homsar". Homsar was promptly "killed" by the Heavy Lourde, but was nonetheless kept as a character, and brought back four months later in Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 5.0.

Homsar occasionally makes brief appearences in various cartoons, but resides exclusively in easter eggs. In the holiday toons, Homsar appears during the toon as it is playing, and is triggered by clicking somewhere on the Poopsmith.

He is a friend to Strong Sad, and possibly even Marzipan, but is seen as a nuisance by the other characters, especially Bubs, Homestar and Strong Bad. Even though Homestar obviously dislikes Homsar, Homsar serves in the Homestarmy and attends parties. He enjoys playing board games with Strong Sad, as well as organising treehugging concerts and directing plays (Butt's Twelve by Pies, Starring the Lighting and Set Decoration), and will call other characters on the phone.

Distinctive Characteristics

Speech

Perhaps the most well-known aspect of Homsar is that he speaks almost entirely in word salads, a speech disorder characteristic of schizophrenia, in which grammar and sentence structure is intact, but the words have no meaning. However, Homsar has more recently made confused stamements as opposed to outright nonsense. For instance, Homsar, after his second appearence in Marzipan's answering machine, began to make strange statements such as "Don't look now, I'm just a friendly reminder", and "I'm a song from the sixties". In recent times, however, he has taken to just saying normal statements completely out of context, like "Let's sing a song of Pennzoil", and "You gotta get yours, I gotta get mine". Interestingly, in his first two appearances, Homsar spoke normally, excepting the fact that even then he had the habit of beginning a statement with "AaAaAaA" and dragging out the last syllable in the sentence. Because he called Marzipan after being crushed by the Heavy Lourde and his speech was intact, it is clear that it was probably not a concussion that made him speak the way he does now. He commented that he "Still couldn't feel his legs", and it is in this way suggested that it was perhaps painkillers that impaired his speech.

Bowler Hat and Psychokenisis

Another aspect of Homsar is that his yellow bowler hat can float. It appears that this hat, which levitates when Homsar speaks, is actually being manipulated, as opposed to just flying about on its own. Homsar is, after all, a character lacking visible arms, and in the Strong Bad Email, time capsule, Homestar is seen manipulating a box, its lid, and a nasty old wig all at the same time. A theory for this is that Homestar, and quite possibly the other characters lacking arms, have limited psychokinetic abilities. Support for this theory is not only the fact that Homsar's hat floats whenever he speaks, but that it can float even when he isn't. Homsar himself is even capable of levitation, as demonstrated in narrator, his character video, A Folky Tale, and 3 Times Halloween Funjob. Apart from levitation, Homsar can duplicate himself (Fall Float Parade), make a paintbrush ring like a bell (Homestar Presents: Presents), and metamorphise (different town, possibly impression. Homsar's supposed metamorphosis in impression is generally accepted to be just a very convincing costume by most people, however, but this cannot exactly be proven or disproven.

Naming of Other Characters

Homsar often assigns the other characters, including himself, strange names. This could be because he has forgotten their real names, is confused, or disregards their real names. These "names" are sometimes based on the character's appearance (Strong Sad: That Rhinocerous) or a similar-sounding name (Bubs: Tubbs). Others (Strong Bad: Reggie) don't make much sense.

Analyzation of Homsar's Character

There is the possibility that Homsar is not at all as confused as he seems. In fact, many of the things he says can be taken as metaphors. For example, take his dialog with Homsar in Pumpkin Carve-Nival.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh brother. What do you make of this guy, The Cheat?
THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises}
HOMESTAR RUNNER: I know, me too. {turns to Homsar} What do you have to say for yourself, little man?
HOMSAR: {unusually dejected voice} I'm the ghost of Christmas past.
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Wow. You set a new standard for last place. You don't  get a ding. {A "LAST" ribbon floats to the ground}
HOMSAR: And also with you.

The way that Homsar says he is the ghost of Christmas past clearly indicates that he is not at all happy. His "And also with you" is a logical response to being offended for his creativity (an eggplant with a spoon taped on). Homsar is quite creative, coming up with new concepts that nobody else would have thought of, like that eggplant just mentioned, but also his abilities to levitate and alter reality. He may even be more aware of his environment that anybody else, and shows that he is through his remarkable abilities. His strange out-of-context statements are possibly lost on the other characters, and only Homsar himself knows just what he's talking about.

HOMSAR: AaAaAaAaAaAaA! Hi, Wonder Mike! I'm Homsar! The captain of the gravy train. {bowler hat pops up and turns into a train conductor's hat} Climb aboard! {hat returns to normal} I've brought my best foot flowered... Pshoooo! (Homsar's hat slides down the back of his head, then snaps back once the "Pshoooo!" sound is over) Sure beats breaking up with me. Don't look now! I'm just a friendly reminder. AaAaAaAaAaAaA! AaAaAaAaAaAaA! {spins around the screen backwards and ends up at the top, upside down} Think I won the Powerball.

Fun Facts

  • "Wonder Mike" is a member of The Sugarhill Gang, famous for the song "Rapper's Delight." In the beginning of "Rapper's Delight", Wonder Mike says "I am Wonder Mike and I'd like to say hello", so Homsar saying "Hi, Wonder Mike" could possibly be a response.
  • "Think I won the Powerball" is a reference to the multistate Powerball Lottery, which is known for having large jackpots.
  • Homsar's character page is the only one with background music.
  • Homsar's nonsensical but grammatically correct dialogue is evidence of a trait found in some mental illnesses, and may be either Word Salad or Receptive Aphasia.
  • Since the camera is presumably upside-down throughout his character video, Homsar starts the video upside-down and ends it right-side-up. He "stands on air" again in the long toon A Folky Tale as an Easter egg.
  • Mr. Shmallow and Nibbles make the same walking noise as Homsar.
  • In most Halloween Toons, Homsar is usually unlocked by something to do with The Poopsmith.
