Homestore Runner!

The Yahoo Store was the Yahoo-based marketplace of Homestar Runner merchandise that ran from May 23, 2005 to March 23, 2015, succeeding the Flash Store. It was based off of Yahoo's Small Business E-Commerence system.

The Shopify store replaced the Yahoo Store on March 23, 2015. On April 1, 2015, the Yahoo store was officially made password-protected and is now defunct.

[edit] Store Footer

The footer

The store footer was a small animation at the bottom of every store page. It featured Bubs at his concession stand, doing his "checkitout checkitout" dance from Lookin at a Thing in a Bag (but without sound). The animation changed throughout the day and year. If you clicked on the 'D' in "BUBS' CONCES5ION STAND", Homestar Runner would run in, do his part of the dance, and leave. In the winter theme, Homestar wore his hat from The Best Decemberween Ever.

[edit] Flash Scenes

  • After buying something, you were once taken to one of several short Store Thank You Messages. They stopped playing on October 9, 2008.
  • When you looked at your shopping cart, various items would randomly generate small Flash scenes with text on the page, with links to other popular items:
    • Strong Bad standing alone with a "GARBAGE SALE" sign
STRONG BAD: Oh yeah?! You think that stuff is so great? Well, check out this other crap!!
    • The Cheat flicking his lightswitch, with a glowstick:
THE CHEAT: "They told me to tell you that you'd also like these things.* Meh!" (*translated from the cheat)
    • Bubs dancing at the concession stand:
BUBS: If you like that stuff, check this junk out!
    • Trogdor chasing a peasant, both drawn in pixel art
TROGDOR: This other stuff'll really burninate your cottage, peasant.
    • Homestar Runner running in place:
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh hello. Umm... you forgot to buy this other stuff that you like.

[edit] Other Places To Buy

[edit] Independent Stores

As explained in the "Retail Opportunities" page, independent brick and mortar comic book, music/video, and other specialty shops could request a wholesale application to sell H*R merchandise (with the stipulation that retailers could not sell the products lower than than TBC had them marked, to keep sales good). They could be found with the store locator or through Google Shopping.

To facilitate ordering and distribution, select merchandise was listed in Previews magazine, a catalog listing upcoming items available for purchase through local comic stores.

[edit] Conventions

Some seriously nerdy stuff

Merchandise was available for sale at comic conventions and shows around the country throughout 2005. The Homestar Runner booth was staffed by Strong Dad and The Mother Chaps. Those who attended had a chance to win door prizes consisting of autographed merchandise. Freebies were included within every purchase.

[edit] DragonCon

Merchandise was sold at booth #101 in the Exhibitor's Hall for all 4 days of DragonCon 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Homestar Runner booth was staffed by the Brothers Chaps, the Family Chaps, and other members of the Homestar crew.

This event was parodied in the short toon Trogdor Con '97.

[edit] Telltale Store

Following the Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People announcement, certain items of Strong Bad related merchandise were added to the Telltale Games online store.

[edit] Fun Facts

[edit] Trivia

  • While loading the musical shirt selection, a message flashed, reading "loading shirtfun".
  • While loading a "Thank-you" message, a loading screen appeared reading "load 'er up".
  • The Kick The Cheat plush toy was not available for purchase for a five-month period beginning 12 April 2005.
  • In October 2009, the store received its own domain: "www.homestarrunnerstore.com", replacing "homestarrunner.stores.yahoo.net".
    • The main pages continued to link to the domain the store sat at in 2004 (www.homestarrunner.com/store.html) rather than the current URL.

[edit] Goofs

  • On the Store Locator map, Wisconsin was spelled "Wisonsin".
  • On the Store Locator map, the links for Alberta and British Columbia were backwards; clicking Alberta referenced an anchor labeled "#BC", while clicking British Columbia references "#ALB".
  • On the Store Locator map, Pennsylvania was not clickable, even though there is a store in the Pennsylvania section of the list.
  • Nebraska, Oklahoma, Virginia, Wisconsin, Minnesota and British Columbia (Canada) were clickable on the Store Locator map even though there are no stores listed for these states.
  • The July 23, 2007 front page update claimed the toy sale ended on "Sunday, August 4" (a Saturday), although the Collectible Figurines page had the correct date of August 5th.
  • When looking at your shopping cart, the link for Kick the Cheat was still on, instead of it being taken out. However, instead of going to its page, you would get redirected to the shop homepage.
  • There was a typo in the laptop skins description which said "slightly shutgunned".

[edit] Inside References

  • The Store Locator on the yahoo store featured The United States and Canada in white underwear, a reference to weird dream.
  • The store's footer at the bottom of the store was Bubs's "checkitout" dance from Lookin at a Thing in a Bag.
  • The "GARBAGE SALE" sign with the "B" crossed out was a reference to garage sale.
  • "Support the Municipality!" was a reference to an Easter egg in the email disconnected.
  • The page title was a reference to The Best Decemberween Ever.
  • The "slightly shotgunned" laptop skin referred to the Easter egg in virus, where the Compy was being sold as such.

[edit] Real-World References

  • The "Trogdor High-Score Club" patch references Activision's early practice of sending free patches to reward players who earned high scores in their games. Games' instruction manuals would list the requisite score, and players were instructed to mail in a photograph of their television with the score achieved.
