Seethroo with some questions

Heya, Tom. Do you ever check this thing? What's goin' on with the Wiki? It seems to be going nuts. ~ AgentSeethroo

Yes, I do. And yeah, it's under some strain right now. Crazy. -- Tom 17:51, 2 Aug 2004 (MST)

Cool, cool. I'm gonna be able to help move stuff tonight. AgentSeethroo

Sweet. I appreciate it. -- Tom 18:41, 3 Aug 2004 (MST)

Hey, is there any particular reason I CANNOT get onto Recent Changes on the oldschool wiki? It's seriously gettin' on my nerves. -- AgentSeethroo 14:03, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

I'm guessing it's just the mySQL overload we've been experiencing. Yeah, bummer. -- Tom 14:05, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

Woah. I added a pantload...but there are still some organizational things that need to be hammered out...I guess check the comments I made in various places...I'm tired... -- AgentSeethroo 23:11, 6 Aug 2004 (MST)

HOLY CRAP! Who're all those people blocked from this wiki??? I didn't know you were doin' that much blocking already! - AgentSeethroo 15:34, 11 Aug 2004 (MST)

Yeah, those are open proxies. You can see the note here and Joey's and my discussion of the topic here. -- Tom 15:47, 11 Aug 2004 (MST)

I wanted to do that for old times sake. Anyway, I kinda discovered something to make transferring things much easier. If you take the code from 'Tavi pages, put em in Word, and then do a ctrl-f, you can have it replace all the parentheses with brackets. Doing things that way, I can get all my links straightened out before I even put the text in MediaWiki. Just sharing... -- AgentSeethroo 15:44, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)

Yeah, I do the same thing, except I use TextPad. It helps a bunch. Mostly. Just have to be a little careful. -- Tom 15:48, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)
How're all my edits and transfers? Is there something wrong that I'm doing that I need to be aware of? (did I just say "doing"? -- AgentSeethroo 15:54, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)
You, my friend, are doing a great job. You're really keeping things moving along. Keep up the good work. I'm seriously thinking you are the man right about now. -- Tom 17:24, 12 Aug 2004 (MST)

Note from Firebird

Just wanted to say thanks for all the work put into the move. Great Job! -- FireBird

You're welcome. -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Redirects

Tom: I'm seeing some deletion of redirect pages on the deletion log. It looks like most of those pages will not be missed, but it does help to have some "common" misspelling articles redirect to the proper article. This is not for sloppy linking , as no pages SHOULD link to a redirect page. This is for people who come to the site, punch in a name into the search box and are taken to the correct page.

There is always some debate over what constitutes a common misspelling. I created a redirect from Whats her face to What's her face. This seems useful to me. Let me know what you think about this. Drhaggis 15:42, 15 Sep 2004 (MST)

I agree. The ones I've been trying to catch are old links that were not fixed correctly during the move. Things like "MainPage 10" that were used instead of "Main Page 10" becuase of CamelCase on 'Tavi. The person who created that redirect then went ahead and created one for "MainPage 11", even though nothing linked there. I don't see the need for 21 pages to be created like this. Another example is "sbemail1" and its companions. There isn't a need for that.
Of course, you also have to remember that we turned on case-sensitivity. That means that "What's Her Face" and "What's her Face" are also two completely different pages. I'd rather that a link show up in red and someone pick up on their mistake right away then have them continue to make links to redirect pages. But I suppose it would be very hard to keep a lid on things like this once we get going. -- Tom 15:55, 15 Sep 2004 (MST)

Note from Jones

[copied and pasted from User:Tom]

I'm just so sick of you being at the top of Special:Wantedpages. So there. Now you're unwanted. -- InterruptorJones 07:49, 3 Sep 2004 (MST)

Thanks Jones. I feel so loved. -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Notes from Maudi

[both were copied and pasted from User:Tom]

Thank God that you made it, Tom! Thank God! -Maudi Algabban

I agree! -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Hey, Tom! Have you listened to "Dragostea din tei" with Haiducii or O-Zone? They're from Romania. -Maudi --193.150.221.247 16:28, 19 Sep 2004 (MST)

Sorry, I have to admit that I still haven't. Have you made a userpage yet? Heh heh. But seriously, I know there's some stuff that needs to be attributed to you by being on your userpage. -- Tom 18:08, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Note

Oh geez, man, it looks like I disambiguated a page you deleted. Took too long doing it, I guess. I'm really sorry about that. --TheNintenGenius 19:40, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

No problem, I can just re-delete it. And I appreciate you leaving this note. It makes me feel good. -- Tom 19:41, 20 Sep 2004 (MST)

Oh Man

[In reply to a comment from User_talk:Thunderbird_L17]

All that work... I'm really sorry. I was trying to figure out why all my pics looked slightly off. Oh well. I've switched over now. I just wish I hadn't deleted them as I went along... Oh well. I think I'm still doing ok for only being here about a week. Again, my apolagies. And they'll all be PNG from now on. Btw, if you could provide me with a list of the JPG pictures I uploaded, I could replace them in my spare time. Thanks.

-Thunderbird

Hey, no problem. Here's a good place to get started. Then there's always the Image List. I think that might work best. And I can come up with a better list if you need it. And I'm glad you can see the difference. -- Tom 04:03, 21 Sep 2004 (MST)

UPDATE:

Topic Complete.

All of my uploaded JPG files are now PNG. Took a bit of doing, but it's done.

Sebastian Coe

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Coe
He first ran against Ovett in Prague in 1978 in an 800 meter race that neither won. The next year in Oslo, Norway, Coe set his first world records (in the 800-meter and mile races). One of the most famous races between Ovett and Coe was in the 1980 Olympic Games in the 1500-meters. Coe won in Olympic Record time.

Further References

From http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/3257/coe.html
He beat Ovett's mile record, running it in 3 min 48.53 sec on August 19; only a week later Ovett set another mile record, which was then shattered by Coe with a 3 min 47.33 sec run on August 28.

Here are some of his times in the mile:
mile 3'48''95 1979 Wr (Oslo)
mile 3'48''53 1981 Wr (Zurich)
mile 3'47''33 1981 Wr (Bruxelles)
Note: Wr stands for World Record.

One final reference: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/World%20record%20progression%20for%20the%20mile%20run

And a quote from you;

"Hmm. [Coe] didn't really run the mile. And he never had the world record."

Could you please cite your references?? As far as I can tell, he not only ran the mile, he also held the world record on three seperate occasions.~Hobo

Um, my bad. But you did notice that I changed my edit after that edit you quoted me on, right? And that I was being particularly ambigious in my wording? Anyway, you are right. No hard feelings. Thank you. -- Tom 19:13, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)
So, were you gonna change it back then? ~Hobo

Idea

How about desktop background downloads for the wiki? Anyone who wanted to create one could, then e-mail one of the admins the image. Then the admin, if approved, could upload it into the wiki images. It's just an idea, but I like the sound of it. I'd love to have an HRwiki background. -- FireBird

Hmm. I don't think so. The problem is this, the Wiki is just for information. If you want to make something on your own and then have it somewhere that you could link to from your userpage, that would be better. See, we kind of tread on this uneasy ground with copyrights and the like. Not only that, but there's also the content issue. I know a background that you would make would most likely be good and wholesome for the Wiki and for Homestar Runner, but I wouldn't want to encourage other not-as-good backgrounds to be made. You are always free to make your own backgrounds, keep them to yourself, use them on your computer, and do what ever you want with them.
As of right now, I'll say this: I don't think you will ever have an official Homestar Runner Wiki background. But I'll ask around and see what I can do. -- Tom 19:43, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)

Floppy Disks

Since you apparently look after the floppy disk section mostly, I figured you would be the best person to ask. How do you feel about a picture of the floppy disk container and it's label beside every listing of it in the inside jokes section? I would be happy to complete that undertaking if you approve. Also, is there anywhere else I could add some pictures? I'm finished the rejects section.

-Thunderbird_L17

Floppy Disk Container/StrongBadEmailDiskLabels. Check it out. The problem is this: the Wiki is text-based, and information provided through text makes things much easier to search and quicker to load. I'm not really sure that having a screenshot of every different one is needed. Why would it need to be seen by the viewer? Could they simply watch the toon or email instead? One thing that really needs to be done regarding The Container is having the links to the page standardized. Every Fun Facts section on every email and toon that has The Container in it should link to the Floppy Disk Container page in a uniform way. You could get started on that, if you want. And then there's what the disks actually reference. There's a subpage of the Old Wiki page on that needs to be copied over and gone through with a fine-tooth comb.
Regarding the images, you kind of need to convince me why they are actually needed. Thanks for asking though, this has really gotten me thinking. -- Tom 19:31, 22 Sep 2004 (MST)
