Banned?

Whenever I try to log on to the IRC channel, it says that I am banned. Did I do something wrong? I hope not, because I was only on it once and barely did anything. I am connecting to the #hrnet IRC channel fine, so it isn't my client. So can you help me out? (=Pixelated=)

Well, my nick is Pixelated or pixelated and my IP changes constantly, so there is no real way of telling. (=Pixelated=)

Time?

Does everyone agree Monday would be the best day of the week? I'm thinking of widening the time out to an hour earlier and an hour later (i.e. 2-6pm Pacific, etc). How does that sound? — Joey (talk·edits) 00:16, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Brit and Aussie chats?

I haven't figured out how to word it concisely, but we should note that 5–9 pm ET is 21:00–1:00 UTC during Daylight Time, 22:00–2:00 UTC during standard time. — It's dot com 05:04, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't know whether there are many people overseas missing out, but the times scheduled at the moment is 7 AM to 11 AM on a Tuesday for Australian Eastern Standard Time (or 6.30 - 10.30 for Central Standard Time, or 5 AM to 9 AM for Western Standard Time). And daylight savings is plus one hour. I'm think we should just change "GMT" to "UTC", because GMT is one hour ahead of UTC in the summer. I'm going to create a little table with the time in different timezones. And this thing is useful for figuring out times on different timezones. «Rob» 10:06, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

I realize Rainer put a lot of effort into the time zone table, but it's incorrect. It lists the times for New York as 4:00pm–8:00pm, with a note (way down at the bottom) that you should add an hour in the summer. But this is not true—If I read correctly what Joey wrote, then it will always be 5–9pm ET, regardless of whether the U.S. is currently observing Daylight Saving Time. Therefore, one could say that the schedule is based on current continental American time, not Universal Time (UTC). In other words, the chat is from 21:00 to 1:00 when the United States is observing Daylight Time, 22:00 to 2:00 when it is not. Perhaps this creates extra work down the road, but we could scrap the notes at the bottom, correct the table for current conditions, and update the table each time daylight savings changes occur. — Joey (talk·edits) 15:36, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

I did away with the coplicated table. (Sorry, Rainer.) In its place there's a link to the World Time Server, which will let users quickly and easily choose their time zone to figure the start time. The link is dynamic, so it should always give accurate information no matter what the time of year (with the small exception already noted on the page). I also simplified which U.S. time zones were listed on the page to just Eastern/Pacific, since it's less cluttered, and I think most people are used to that from TV anyway. — It's dot com 18:01, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Thoroughly Confused!!!

I'm a Mac-user, and none of these IRC clients have a program for Mac. I'm sickeningly horrible with computers, so I have no clue how to get any of this up and running. Whenever I use the chat without a client, it says it can't connect! Can someone help me out here please? -- Homeschool Winner 00:16, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

On the current scheduling

While it may not have been much of a problem when we were all out of school, Monday nights are now less optimal than other nights, inasmuch as everyone requires their sleep on that night in preparation for Tuesday. However, I'm not here to state the obvious. My proposition is that we change the formal chat party night to Friday. In addition to the length everyone can stay up, another point still stands: on a Monday, one has to not only get to sleep on time, but do homework. On Friday, one can do homework or save it for the weekend. As such, Friday would probably be a much more ideal night for the parties. I'd hope that I share this belief with others... if you do, share that below, please. Oh, and forgot to note: this is not to say that Monday night parties are not of any sense, they can still be held. I merely am asking that a chat party be held on Friday nights, as well. In keeping with the original intent, I'd like to keep holding scheduled chats on Mondays, but I have nothing against holding them on Fridays as well, and it seems logical. We've had more people in the channel lately, so bringing the scheduled chats up to twice weekly sounds like a good idea. A suggestion in light of circumstances

It seems to me as if the chat parties have lost something recently... the sort of comraderie once had in said gatherings is now drowned and diluted by the influx of *ahem* newer persons. This coincides with the beginning of the consistency of the usage of the wiki-wide notice about the chat parties. It helps not that the notice gathers the intention of the newcomers from HR.net, those well-intentioned and those not so. At present rate, regardless of their origin, it attracts the eye of a many who think it most amusing to simply be annoying idiots. In favour of the notice's removal? Not in favour? fanstuff channel

Homesar999, I appreciate your enthusiasm and desire to be impact the hr community, but please understand that since it is not officially a part of the wiki, it doesn't really belong in this page at this point in time. Perhaps at a future time it might be more appropriate to do so, but not right now. Disrupting the wiki? You'd be pissed off, too, Tom, if you created a channel for a wiki 2 months before, then it was recreated and listed. (I realize it was created by JoeyDay, but my channel has been around longer, and deserves some recognition. --Homsar999

Homsar, there would be a huge difference if Tom opened the channel. In fact, Tom originally opened the #hrwiki channel. The difference is Tom is an admin and has some authority around here to open official channels. You on the other hand, are not an admin and have no authority to open anything official. It doesn't matter whose channel has been around longer. Problammo

I tried logging in as Bassium! and it said invalid username disconnecting. Why? Where do I get a username? Bassium! m OCE

When you log onto the chat, click the bottom blue box. In there, type /msg Nickserv register Bassium! <password>, replacing <password> with your password. I can't help you much, but I do know this: in the old days IRC used to have two colors: black, and white (or black and amber, or orange and black... you get the idea!) Then came this little chat program that became popular called mIRC and they decided one day to add colors to chat rooms! They were quite popular and many ppl used funky codes to display colors. You had to use mIRC to select them and see them as well. Wether that has become an IRC standard since then, I do not know. If it has, then that is where it comes from, if not, well... An easy way that you could display the text in different colors is by holding down Ctrl, then K. After that, add a number, from 1-16. You can also display a background by typing the # that represents the color of the font, a comma, then the # that represents the color of the background.

Example: Ctrl, K(a strange sign will appear) - now type in 2,4(with no spaces involved) - in this case, the 2 is representing the font color, which would show up blue. Now, the 4 is representing the background color, which would show up red.

Now, i'm not positive which number represents which color, so you'll just have to mess around and fuigure that out yourself. Homestramy20|^Talk 07:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

This means the IRC server did not accept the username (User ID) settings. In the error message it shows the part it did not like between the [ ] brackets. Most probably there is at least one character in there that the server didn't like. We'll have to make sure to remove all strange characters from the User ID, like that period. In the meantime, just try again and hope the random server is a different one than that one. -- Tom 05:37, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

TriviaTime?

Two TriviaTime related questions:

1. Should we link the #hrwiki-trivia channel as well, even though it's only usable when Joey's on (and has the time)?
2. Should we have a weekly trivia session at the same times as the scheduled chat? - Kookykman(t)(c)(r)

My plan is to make the #hrwiki-trivia channel more public as soon as I've got TriviaTime on a computer that can be connected to the net 24/7. I'm looking into the possibility of getting an old PC from WGU, so sit tight for a few days and TriviaTime might be a permanent fixture in the channel.
