When The Brothers Chaps are discussing the characters in the Homestar Runner body of work (usually in interviews), they will often facetiously use the term dumb animal characters, or variations of the phrase.

• Zoinks! Magazine Interview — Matt describes Homestar Runner as "a cartoon about a bunch of dumb animal characters".
• Late Nite JengaJam Interview - 4 Oct 2007 — "Jengaship" says that Matt does the voices for the "dumb animal characters".
• The Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show Interview - 7 July 2014 — Matt says he's "just excited to make these dumb animal characters talk again."
• Halloween Safety — Mike says that he and Matt normally let their dumb animal characters do the talking.
• Gizmodo Interview - 24 Jan 2017 — Recalling seeing a photo of Geddy Lee with a Strong Bad hat, Matt states, "We have no idea if he knew what Strong Bad was, but our dumb animal character was on his head while he probably shredded 'Working Man' so I’ll take it!"

Variations

• Inkhole Interview — When asked about homestarrunner.com, Matt says, "A bunch of crazy animal characters run around and make fun of each other." The Inkhole asks if he meant "like squirrels".
• Peasant's Quest Movie Trailer (DVD commentary) — Mike says that it was nice to go out and do something instead of animating "stupid animal characters" all day.
• homestarrunnerdotcom — The channel description mentions "waggly, animated animal characters".
• Screenland - 24 April 2017 — Matt refers to the characters as "weird non-human, non-animal characters".
