[edit] Image

"And now to announce your Prom King and Queen!"
I feel this image better sums up the gag, but I fear if I change it even more people will get it confused with Cross-dressing. Should we just leave the image the same? Bad Bad Guy 23:03, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree, this image is better. — Defender1031*Talk 23:04, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Visor Robot

How do we know the Visor Robot is a boy?

He has the brain of a kindly old man (Homestarloween Party). And he admits in an Easter Egg that he is not Valerie. Bad Bad Guy 15:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No it is not

Teen Girl Squad Issue 12 iwas this " dude she said she likes cloth ." he talking to the guy next to him you twit 66.234.218.129 (talk • contribs) {{{2}}} (left unsigned)

"Did that dude just tell you she likes cloth?" That quote you said isn't even real. Bad Bad Guy 23:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, you might want to watch that cartoon again. There are only 3 people in that panel. What's Her Face and the two Band Name Boys. One of the guys says to his friend, "Did that dude just tell you she likes cloth?" Not a whole lot of ambiguity there. —BazookaJoe 00:07, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
What I've seen: while it is less commonly used towards girls, "dude" is sometimes used as a non-gender-specific term. Calling What's Her Face a "dudette" would be overkill. The band name boys are just being cool with each other. I don't know whether this one belongs on this page. The Knights Who Say Ni 06:36, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

In response to anything posted here, is gender confusion of any relevance whatsoever? How is it anything more than trivial in a web comic created solely for amusement? And furthermore, don't we all jokingly refer to some of our friends as someone from the opposite gender, or even refer to a mixed gender group as "you guys"? I mean, does every instance of that in informal conversation need to be documented and scrutinized now? This article is ridiculous and should just be deleted. --66.252.45.13 03:41, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Homestar Reading Off of a Card

In Malloween Commercial, Homestar calls Marshie "Little boy or little girl," and in isp he calls Strong Bad "ma'am". However, he appeared to be reading a template when he said these quotes. Should they count anyway? Bad Bad Guy 00:07, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oh...excardon me...

Does anyone else think Senor Cardgage should be separated? Like, not his own article, but a separate section in this article. I mean, SB states in Cardgage's first appearance that he's got a bit of gender confusion. A separate section would make it easier to find other characters' confusions, which definitely are the exception and not the rule, as in Senor's case. I'd be up to doing this if no one else is, but I figgered a consensus would be in order first.--Onamuji (b/w T. C.  ) 15:56, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Revisiting this because it seems like it doesn’t really fit. The other sections like SB and Coach Z are examples of character mistaking *their* gender. All the examples in the cardgage section are *his* confusion of other characters’ gender -61.204.232.1 02:34, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

[edit] Homosexuality...Gender Confusion

Before I get into an edit war over this, let's discuss this here. Frankly, I don't believe that homosexuality is either the same gag or really an example of gender confusion. Could someone please try to explain the rationale behind it's inclusion (remembering that this is a family talk page). Flashfight 08:15, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
PS: BBG, "<>" should be read "is either less than or greater than" or more easily "is not equal to". Essentially, my rationale for removal was that Homosexuality is not Gender Confusion

I would concur that the examples of "homosexuality" is not appropriate for the page. It is not a related gag, and I would argue that some don't fit. Coach Z's belief he's Bubs date in Date Nite would be an example of gender confusion and/or cross dressing. wbwolf (t | ed) 13:59, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Can we please NOT have this controversy? The coach z one is just coach z's perception of reality. The homestar one is a funny one-time gag, and the brianrietta one wasn't even TBC's joke. I don't think that this topic has any place on our family-friendly wiki. — Defender1031*Talk 14:40, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
I object to the idea of Homestar Runner characters being sexual at all, hetero-, homo-, or otherwise. I think TBC have purposefully avoided this kind of humor, and it wouldn't be accurate for us to construe their characters as having sexual preferences.
In a scene like do over, the right way to think about it is that Homestar is like an elementary school kid who has absolutely no idea what he's talking about when he says, "Uh, Strong Bad? I think I'm falling for you." In a situation like studying, Strong Bad probably doesn't know what bases 2 and above are, and if you asked him, he'd stammer, "Actually, I don't really know anything about the ladies. I mean I do! I mean—WHGT! JGTH! YES I'M AWESOME!"
This issue has been hashed out elsewhere, and since TBC have purposefully avoided making their characters sexual (saints be praised!), it wouldn't be accurate for us to speculate about the subject. Trey56 16:22, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
There's a flaw in that, in the fact that homestar and marzipan date, strong bad is always talking about the ladies, etc... sure they've never explicitly said or done anything past first base, but still they do have an orientation. — Defender1031*Talk 16:32, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
I still contend that they go on dates without there being anything sexual about it. Trey56 16:35, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
It seems that it takes 3 logical assumptions to make this section worthwhile. A. That the dumb animal characters have the capacity to be sexual beings. B. That the same dumb animal characters have engaged in homosexuality enough instances for it to warrant inclusion. C. That homosexuality is indeed Gender Confusion. It seems that Trey took care of (A); DeFender took care of (B); and no strong proponent for (C) has emerged. Seems like a very clear consensus and syllogistic proof against the inclusion of this subsection. Flashfight 18:36, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I had originally intended to write a separate article about Homosexuality, but then Loafing told me to combine it with Gender Confusion. Bad Bad Guy 22:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

To begin with, I contest that there are no sexual references in the Homestarrunner Universe. There are indeed instances where someone might want someone's... bod. And I'm sure making out with Marzipan is good times. I'm not disputing that the characters themselves have retained a certain childlike innocence. And no, I also don't think that homosexuality is a type of gender confusion. But I do think the two articles are related, as their instances overlap. And I thought that it might be a good idea to combine them into one article that covers all potential sexual references, so as not to create too many articles of the type and maintain that certain childlike innocence elsewhere on the wiki. That's my main reason for the suggestion. Loafing 00:27, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Addendum: I would count the removed instances as examples of homosexual behaviour (or homosexual-style behaviour, if you like) (and except for maybe Date Nite). It doesn't mean that any of these people is actually gay or seriously means it this way. Loafing 01:45, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I think the hangup I have is with the terminology — in almost all situations "heterosexual" and "homosexual" cannot be separated from their sexual meanings. If there existed words like "heterophilic" and "homophilic" or something, those might be appropriate, but to my knowledge, no such words exist... Trey56 02:39, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I can understand Loafing's reasoning on this topic. But if we keep homosexuality as a subtopic of gender confusion, it will be critical that an introduction is written that covers Loafing's points. Moreover, it has be clear that what is covered under the heading is same gender romantic relationships (male in this case, since there only one girl), and not the other baggage that gets associated with "homosexuality". While it doesn't affect the merit of the addition, I do fear that it will become an easy vandal target... wbwolf (t | ed) 03:18, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Addendum:I would add that conflation of gender confusion and homosexuality is not appropriate (the two topics only have a tenuous connection, mainly Coach Z's cross dressing tendencies), but as Loafing noted, it shouldn't have its own page nor can I think of a better place to put it. wbwolf (t | ed) 03:23, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't think that it shouldn't have it's own article. If we can't find a good way of putting it on this article, then it'd be fine to have a proper article for it. Loafing 03:34, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
At the risk of being too vocal, I strongly disagree with the existence of such a page as long as the wording of the page has any implications (intended or otherwise) of sexuality. I would be embarrassed to think of TBC reading a page on the wiki about the sexual preferences of their characters. (But I do agree that the material isn't compatible with this page either.) Trey56 03:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
The concept of Sexuality, as we know it, does not exist in the Homestar Runner universe (even making out is treated on a grade-school level). However, a similar concept, Romance, does. A page about romance could list references to dating relationships (Homestar and Marzipan's, obviously), and exceptions (Date Nite, etc.), and it would include the references removed from this page but would be rewritten such that we acknowledge the inherent asexuality of these characters and the fact that none of this is taken seriously. I'm not saying there should be such a page; I'm simply presenting the alternative. — It's dot com 04:30, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, treating the subject as Romance (or some similar title) would be consistent with the way it appears in Homestar Runner. Discussing dating relationships, crushes (Coach Z on Marizpan, etc.), and so on in a completely asexual way would be fine, as long as the community deems such content notable enough for its own article. Trey56 04:36, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I think an article about romances of the characters is a good idea. Either them to be one mutual, one sided or just plain creepy, they do have a real part in the universe and even whole toons, like Date Nite were made about it. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 08:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I am strongly opposed to the inclusion of homosexuality in gender confusion, because it only furthers stigma. The majority of homosexuals are not crossdressers. The majority of crossdressers are heterosexual. And the transsexual population includes heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, autosexual, metrosexual, and asexual members. The number of homosexual transsexuals and heterosexual transsexuals are actually fairly even from my experience both AS a transsexual, and with many other transsexuals I have known. Implying that Homestar saying "I think I'm falling to you" has ANYTHING at ALL to do with gender only perpetuates horrible and usually incorrect stereotypes that only lead people to false assumptions and, in many cases, discrimination and bigotry based on said false assumptions. Either create a page that includes ALL relationships, heterosexual and homosexual alike, or don't mention relationships at all. 157.89.74.155 21:36, 9 September 2008 (UTC) (Intentionally posted anonymously.)
I'd ask who you're ranting at, given that this was settled MONTHS ago and consensus agrees with you, but I just noticed that some anonny re-added do over. --Jay (Talk) 21:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Well then. No problem. I saw that there and assumed that the debate was still going on, never bothered to actually pay attention to the times of the posts. My apologies. 157.89.74.155 01:02, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

So...is anyone going to make that page?76.68.36.61 00:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure we decided a while ago not to make the page, and deleted it when it was made. --DorianGray 01:03, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Virtual Pizz.biz

Would it be relevant to either article to note that Homestar's slice had lipstick? BBG 01:56, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Other Characters

I think the "other characters" section is too long. StarFox 18:30, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Figure out which characters have "gender confusion" as a defining trait, then give them their own sections. BBG 19:42, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "looks like..." and etc.

"Looks like" when used in certain ways, along with other instances on this page (IE: the senor cardgage one at the top) do not really warrant the "gender confusion" title, as they were not "confused with the gender of the target." Might need to warrant a "Not-So-Confused Gender Switches" or something? ColdReactive 06:21, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
