Gulp is an onomatopoeic word describing audible breathing or swallowing, usually used to express emotions like distress or nervousness.
The Homestar Runner characters will frequently speak the word "gulp" out loud, rather than simply performing the action itself. This "gulp!" is often preceded by nervous humming.
