Pan Pan is a good bear

Pan Pan, an anime-style Giant Panda, is the 20X6 version of Pom Pom. Pan Pan seems to be a takeoff on the obligatory anime animal mascot, though in Under Construction he behaves more or less like Pom Pom. Like the other forms of Pom Pom, he doesn't speak in English, and he instead speaks in a sort of strange "boinging" sound. Pan Pan falling on 1-Up appears to be a running gag.

Like most other 20X6 characters, getting the appropriate pill in the Scrolling Shooter Games Menu will reveal Pan Pan. Here, Pan Pan opens his mouth to talk instead of boinging.

In Stinkoman 20X6, Pan Pan gets kidnapped by the Shadowy Figure. 1-Up tries to tell Stinkoman, but Stinkoman has other plans. Eventually 1-Up joins Pan Pan in captivity after a failed rescue plan.

The Name

He may be a parody of Genma Saotome from the anime "Ranma ½" who turns into a giant panda. He may also be a parody of Evangelion's "Pen Pen" (or "Pen^2"), a penguin with a similar coloring, name, and deer-in-the-headlights expression on his face.

In Japanese, panpan is an onomatopoeia for the sound of a slap. It is also an imitative word for a bulging, plumpy, or swollen appearance.

Pan-pan is also the nautical call sign for a non-life-threatening emergency.
