Biography

Marzipan is Homestar Runner's girlfriend, although during the course of the website's run she's become more and more annoyed with her sweetheart. She has actually broken up with him on numerous occasions. Some of these break-ups were due to Homestar's unintentional mean streak, but most are simply a means of demonstrating her independence. Luckily for Homestar, Marzipan continues to love him dearly and the two always seem to wind up together again. As Strong Bad says, she's a "dirty hippie without the dirt." She is a strict vegetarian and enjoys tofu and soy products. She's a huge animal-rights activist, and she likes to sit outside and play songs about happiness. Her answering machine is a target of pranks from Strong Bad and others. Marzipan is the only character voiced by the talented Missy Palmer, and the only main female character on the entire site. This has earned her the somewhat unwanted romantic attentions of the other characters, particularly Coach Z, Bubs, and Strong Mad. She tends to anthropomorphize inanimate objects, as seen with her guitar Carol, Homestar Jr. from Where's The Cheat?, and "Mr. Corn" and the Butternut Squashes from Halloween Fairstival. Marzipan also dyes her hair, as revealed in "Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 12.2."

Like Homestar, Marzipan has no visible arms, though she is able to interact with the world as though she did, being able to pick up and move objects, and even play a guitar. It is generally accepted that either her arms are invisible, or that she has limited telekinetic powers. This is never directly explained in any cartoon, nor is it expected to be explained in the future. There is a slight amount of evidence that she has invisible arms, as displayed by her slap of (and subsequent handprint on) Homestar in the Search of the Yello Dello cartoon, but the credibility of this instance must be weighed against the toon's age and poor quality.

On occasion she has been easily fooled by poor attempts to imitate Homestar, such as Tofu Homestar and The Cheat's costume in do over. Like the Homestar Jr. and her Halloween potion, these may simply reflect a desire to change, replace, or accept altered versions of her boyfriend. She is one of the kindest characters and is friends with pretty much everybody (even Strong Sad and Homsar) except Strong Bad and The King of Town. She also hosts a Fall Float Parade with Coach Z.

There is actually proof that Homestar holds a deep, inwards feeling of contempt and resentment towards Marzipan, as shown in Happy Fireworks , when Homestar replaces Marzipan with a cardboard cutout while she is out of town. When imitating her, he uses a low and sad voice, and tends to say very exaggerated complaints. In the end of the cartoon, when Cardboard Marzipan claims that fireworks promote violence, Homestar bluntly adds, "Shut up, Marzipan."

Marzipan and The Cheat have currently been working together on several projects, such as The Cheat's direction on the video for her hit "Oh Yeah!", and the two, along with Strong Mad, have recently started a band called Cool Tapes, in which Marzipan sings lead and plays Carol.

{Page Title: Oh Yeah Yeah!!} {Place: Marzipan's Gazebo}

MARZIPAN: Hi, I'm Marzipan, and this is my guitar Carol. Say hi, Carol. {performs a scale in E major} Ooh, E scale. Nice choice. When I'm not rockin' out, I like to dig in my garden and eat. I'm a fiercely independent woman, and I'm fiercely independent about the soy products that I choose. Homestar Runner and I {Homestar leans in frame} are one hot item when I say we are. And today we are (not).

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Yay!/Boo! {leans out of frame}

MARZIPAN: I like baby animals, and cats and dogs. But it makes me sad to see cats and dogs in the same room together. Okay, bye. I'm off to the Chinchilla protest. {She pulls out a protest sign that reads "Chinchillas OUT!! (of my basement)" and walks away}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {leaning in frame} Boo!/Yay! {leans out of frame}

(Sometimes Marzipan says "And today we are," to which Homestar responds "Yay!" and sometimes she says "And today we are not," in which case Homestar says "Boo!" Whichever response Homestar gives here, he gives the opposite at the end.)

Fun Facts

Yes, she does have teeth.
  • The old characters page in the museum says Marzipan's father is The King of Town, but this is the only reference to it on the site, and The Brothers Chaps have said that this was an idea they had early in the site's development but have since thrown it out.
  • Marzipan is also a confectionery consisting primarily of ground almonds and sugar that derives its characteristic flavor from bitter almonds, which constitute 4% to 6% of total almond content by weight. Most marzipan is also flavored with rosewater.
  • In an interview with Wired magazine, Missy Palmer said that Marzipan started out as a hippie, but over time her personality has changed to match Missy's own.
  • The character page title is a reference to Marzipan's song from the email marzipan.
