[edit] Show Preview

Just a tip for future reference for when you're editing, there is a "Show preview" button next to the "Save page" button - if you use that, you can see what you've changed without saving the page, which is easier than saving and clicking "edit" again, and it doesn't fill up Recent changes with your edits. phlip TC 06:59, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, Phlip, but I'm just trying to show the changes to my userbox every time I update it. Apparently, the wiki isn't scripted to do that. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:22, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
It will. Sometimes it takes a little while for the template to update. Don't worry too much about it. — Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:46, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
OK, thanks. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:44, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
If you edit a template that's not in the Template: namespace (like your user box tower for example) it doesn't automatically rebuild any pages that use it, 'cause it doesn't realise it's a template. What you need to do is purge the wiki's cache of what your page should look like, so it can rebuild it from the updated template. That doesn't put an entry in the RC... phlip TC 11:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Download links

Please stop adding them to the main page. We're just linking toons and games. Thanks. — It's dot com 05:53, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

The intent of the watch links, etc, is so that people can easily see the latest updates from the Main Page. They don't need to be added to the update archives, it will only make that page cluttered. phlip TC 06:00, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh, now I understand. Thanks, guys. By the way, Phlip, really enjoying your Homestar All-In-One. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:24, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Danke!!

Thanks for catching that typo on the SM's Posse userbox. That was odd...— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:33, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, it was nuthin', Bassbone. I mean, I owed you for initiating me into SM's posse in the first place. By the way, do you send messages to other members in case of a new member? If not, maybe you should. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:41, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I dunno. I just kind of started it as a joke, because Strong Mad is kind of an underappreciated character and I like the Strong Mad Has a Posse sticker. It's not really a sort of wiki secret society or anything. Just thought it'd be a nifty thing to see if it caught on. Thanks for joining. If I think up anything cool I'll let you know! — Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:46, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
OK, then. Just wondering. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:47, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki Guestbook Society

Hey, X2 Spidey confused superhero! Your "Wiki Moron Society" is clever. Unfortunately, it's a lot like a creative take on the guestbook concept, and a while back we were having some trouble with a guestbook epidemic and decided to do without them. You can see the short version at HRWiki:Guestbooks, or if you've got insomnia see its talk page for the thrilling, epic discussion. One of the things that came out of that event was that it's definitely preferred not to have elements on your userpage that encourage others to edit it. This talk page here is fine for that! So, one idea would be to move the membership list here to the talk page. Even better, though: think about what the Society really means. If someone just signs their name on a list, have you gotten to know them all that well? (And, flipside, unless you get to know them well, are they likely to seek out the list?) Maybe an even better replacement would be to simply hang out, watch what users do, talk to them about it, and build real friendships that way. Some users have had concepts similar to your society, but lists that they add people to when those people do something unusually cool, sort of a hall of fame. That might be a way to go.
Summary: 1) it needs to be moved from the userpage, and 2) think carefully about whether you can improve on the concept and get something that means even more.
Oh, and welcome to the wiki! Great to have you on board. —AbdiViklas 01:45, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hang on. I didn't mean it to be a guestbook, just a joke. Although, maybe I should make it a joke message subscription instead. I already have, so I'll see how it works out. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 01:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Hello there. Please have a look at HRWiki:User space regarding subpages. Perhaps the fanstuff would be a better place for your joke sign-up. — It's dot com 04:46, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Editing user pages and the preview button

Please again review HRWiki:User space, especially the point to avoid editing another's user page without their permission. Also, you must become aware of the "Show preview" button. For instance, it helps in turning three individual edits into one. Thanks. -- Tom 05:42, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi X-Spider2. I also notice you're editing the main userboxes page to put in links to specific users. Specific users should not be linked to on that page. Likewise, the fun userboxes should all tie in to some concept on the official site, not fanstuff. Please stop adding fanstuff userboxes to the page. Lastly, I notice that you're editing templates that appear on many wiki pages. While we encourage people to make improvements as they see fit, whenever a change involves edits to lots of pages it's better to bring it up on a discussion page first. Thanks. — It's dot com 16:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sig page

Please leave your signature visible on your sig page, regardless of whatever help section you have there. We need to be able to see it. (By the way, if you really need a help section, maybe your sig is too complicated.) Thanks. — It's dot com 07:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

I notice that now. Maybe I should upload a Flash version, if the next website upgrade can handle Flash. I'm talking to YOU, JoeyDay. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 10:31, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
This is a knowledge base, and it will never support Flash signatures. -- Tom 13:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, man! if only I knew enough web scripting for this kind of thing. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 22:10, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind. Created custom tooltips. (Tooltips: n. 1. The things that appear when you rollover a link and keep it there for long enough.) —Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 06:30, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Signature

I have created a "sig" but how do I define it as my signature that I can leave on talk pages for instance?

Booksworm 07:13, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

This page oughta help. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:20, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook

Hey there x-spider. I've noticed you've been making a whole lot of monobook edits. Please keep in mind that using show preview while editing your monobook file will show changes that will happen to your display, without even having to clear your cache. Using show preview will reduce the number of recent changes floods coming from your direction, and that way you won't have to keep clearing your cache. Thanks, Thunderbird 05:45, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Gah! Thanks. Didn't understand what that did at all. (Talking about the preview.) It should help me with adding a seconds counter to my Sydney clock. Maybe you could too. It's not working right. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 05:51, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
You'd probably get more help from a toaster. I know wikis just fine, but when it comes to scripts and code stuff, I'm totally illiterate. sorry. Thunderbird 05:56, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Maybe Phlip? I mean, he wrote the Homestar All-In-One. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 08:28, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh yeah, Phlip knows all about that kind of thing. Thunderbird 15:23, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] UTC clock help?

I noticed you were putting code and stuff on the UTC clock page, and i was wondering if you got that to work. I put the code in my monobook.js and monobook.css files and i don't see a clock. is there anything else i'm supposed to do? --- Image:Videlectrix man.sig.gif Collin - (T/C) 06:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

nevermind, i guess i just needed to clear my cache. but the seconds code doesn't work, the seconds appear but instead of changing in the same spot, every time a new second appears the time moves over. do you have that problem?--- Image:Videlectrix man.sig.gif Collin - (T/C) 06:43, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Used to. Guess I should've asked Phlip about it first.

[edit] User page edits

Hi there, X-Spider2. I know that we provide the freedom for a user to edit his userpage as much as he like, as long as he don't break any guidelines, but there is something that's called too much. Everyday I look at the Recent Changes page and see dozens of edits to either your Monobook page, your user page, user subpages or sig page. At this point you have more then 500 edits to those pages, while only about 80 to mainspace pages and just 5 to mainspace talk pages. For comparison, I have the same number of user page edits and I've been here for more then a year, while you're around for about two months. I'm not saying that what you do is wrong or not allowed, as we all like our user pages to be "just perfect". In my opinion, your userpage is quite long, alaborated and all-inclusive and that you should concentrate on editing mainspace pages for a while. I looked at your contributions and I personaly think that they are great. You should also be more involved in conversations going on talk pages and share your opinion. If you are looking for something to do, you could try to de-stub pages, correct mistakes, search broken links and redirects, vote on STUFF and many other things. I think you can be a great user. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 11:06, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid I have to second E.L.'s comments here. I look at your recent contributions and see that your last 100 edits (and probably more) are almost exclusively in your user space. Please try to branch out a little into the main or main talk namespaces and out of the user and user talk namespaces. Also, you don't need more than one signature subpage, let alone a page to group multiple signatures. — It's dot com 06:06, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Then how can I manage different signatures? My sig's too long in the edit field. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 06:21, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
You don't need different signatures. If you absolutely must, then you can change your signature for a holiday (although this is somewhat frowned upon except at Decemberween time). What edit field are you talking about? — It's dot com 06:24, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, you mean the edit window? The best advice I can give you there is to simplify your sigature. Fanstuff contribs? Maps on the N User Map Archive? Please. Why do you need all those links in your knowledge-base sig? The answer is you don't. Look at my sig. It's as plain as plain can be, and yet within a couple of clicks, you could discover everything about me and my contributions and tell me about it on my talk page. That is to say, people generally know how to get around someone's user space. Your current sig, on the other hand, even with the handy tooltips, generates unpredictable results for anybody who is in a hurry and is just trying to get to your user page. When people try to click on your name, they should get your user page; they shouldn't have to wonder why they just ended up at a LiveJournal. (Please don't think that I am intending to single you out here; I know that there are several users with sigs similar to yours. My thoughts on those sigs are the same as here.) — It's dot com 06:34, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Fine. I'll do something about my sig when I've finished my homework. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 07:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Is HRWiki upgraded to MediaWiki 1.6 yet? --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 06:50, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Almost. We upgraded the fanstuff wiki, but even though we tested everything ahead of time, we still experienced a few more bugs than we anticipated. As soon as those get worked out, then we'll upgrade here as well. — It's dot com 06:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
OK, thanks. It's just that, I'm starting to get a bit impatient. By the way, I'm on the fanstuff wiki (although at this rate, maybe I shouldn't be), and I visit often, so I already know it's been upgraded, man. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 06:50, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category

Hey X-Spider2. I like how you have taken up welcoming users. We do not usually like for users to create categories for other users, so please stop creating the category for users that you have welcomed. Thanks, Rogue Leader / (my talk) 00:21, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, just trying to keep proper track of everyone I've welcomed. You see, sometimes I forget to add users to my Helscomed! list after I welcome them. --Y2K (15px-Crystal_Clear_app_xchat.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_kedit.png15px-Crystal_Clear_app_email.png) 00:24, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Just curious—why? Not why do you forget, why do you keep a list? I know a lot of people do, but I find this curious. About the only reason I can think of for somebody to keep count of how many newbies they've welcomed is to make it clear that they're not a newbie themselves: "Hey, look! I've been here longer than at least 24 people!" It leads to kind of a weird feel, though, when you see somebody welcome a user sweetly, and then cuts another "notch in their barrel". It makes it seem sort of like the new user was a kill, or at least a means to advance the welcomer's list. But in actuality, the welcome is there to help the person who gets it. By the way, you know what makes the "I'm experienced around here" statement much better? A user's contributions page. I mean, if you want to keep an impressive list, why not from time to time add the edits your proudest of?
So yeah, it's not like it's against the rules to keep a "welcomed" list—though it has been discussed—but in case you can't tell I am kinda trying to talk you out of it. I know it's a tough addiction to break. But you can do it, man. I believe in you. —AbdiViklas 01:16, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey, X-Spider2. I made some slight changes to your welcome template. The changes are detailed in my edit summaries (see the history). I hope you don't mind. —BazookaJoe 01:57, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
