Talk:Spokane
From Homestar Runner Wiki
[edit] Only 3 times
With only three instances, I don't think this is that significant to constitute a separate page. Wolf O'Donnel 04:59, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- According to the inclusion guidelines, three is the minimum for a running gag article (with one exception). RickTommy (edits) 05:50, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- Not quite. "Needs at least three to four appearances within the Homestar Runner body of work and must be significant in some way to the Homestar Runner universe in contrast to the real world." The guideline for pages relating to a generic item or event (or location, in this case) "needs at least five to ten appearances and must be of at least moderate importance to the work".

- I agree with Wolf (and presumably Gfd, as well). This article isn't of importance enough to only need three appearances. In addition to being just a real-world location, the mentions of Spokane are of very little importance in all three instances ("Cat," Spoke Anne, "Wash!" is probably the best one, but it's just an Easter egg based on Strong Bad's pun of the email sender's name and address), and the city itself no real significance in Homestar Runner to warrant an article. — Keegster2 (Howl at me) 17:02, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- I can think of at least two articles I created that fall under this distinction (Starflight and Marble Craze). Also, "voting"? RickTommy (edits) 01:57, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
- I personally feel like the articles RickTommy brought up have more merit than this one. In real life and most works of media, Starflight and Marble Craze aren't referenced nearly as much as the state of Spokane, implying that these games are somehow notable to the Brothers Chaps.

- It seems clear to me that Spokane is also somehow notable to TBC. Keep. -113.37.226.89 03:50, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict'd) I certainly don't have a problem with this article. All of the references to Spokane are fairly direct and easily recognizable, and this page gathers them into one place. Meanwhile, the references to Starflight and Marble Craze are either tangential or unspoken, and they wouldn't be recognized by someone who isn't familiar with the games. Which is, of course, to say nothing against those articles. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc - Spokane is a city.

- Oh... right, the page literally has an image of a book named after "Spokane, Wash". Thanks, guess I overlooked that somehow. Anyway, the fact that it's a city seems to make it a slightly more specific reference than I thought, so it's got that going for it... Also I should clarify, while I'm still a bit iffy on whether this qualifies as a running gag and therefore meets the inclusion guidelines, I don't feel all that strongly about whether this article should be deleted. If it's decided that this page is more helpful than not, I'd be fine with keeping it.

- After reading these comments and the article I think people may be missing some context with regards to this running gag. I'm fairly certain that when I first saw the spelling of the city of "Spokane, Wash" I immediately pronounced it as "spo-cane". I believe this is how most American readers would pronounce it when first seeing the name of the city written out (or hear it from their peers). Whereas people native to the state, including some of my friends and co-workers, pronounce it 'correctly' as "spo-can". (See this article and video for reference.) You could also interpret that pronunciation as "spoke-anne" same as TBC did in the book "Cat," spoke Anne, "Wash!"! I believe they're basically telling us how the city is pronounced by the locals! So, I believe this is a bit more than a generic running gag and merits inclusion in the wiki. By the way, the city is named after a native American tribe much like many other cities and regions in the US and is likely the origin of the pronunciation. --Stux 10:22, 27 June 2023 (UTC)
