I don't think there's anything too unusual about the way Strong Bad uses the word smoldering, and thus it's not notable enough for an article, despite four appearances. — It's dot com 05:18, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm kinda torn. On the one hand, it's used gratuitously and unusually like style, but on the other hand, it is not that unusual to refer something burning as "smoldering". And we all know how Strong Bad likes explosions. The "smoldering pile of money" is probably the oddest usage of the four. wbwolf (t | ed) 05:22, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree that smoldering money is unusual, but describing craters (especially ones created from recent explosions) and other things that are on fire as being smoldering is proper usage, and as such don't really count in my mind toward establishing a documentable pattern. "Smoldering crater" might work, but there's only two appearances. — It's dot com 05:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree that the only unusual use of the word is with respect to money. All the other instances are typical ways to use the word, so there's really just one notable appearance for this page, which isn't enough. And, as Dot com said, there are two instances of "smoldering crater", but that's not enough to constitute a documentable trend.

So, I'm going to have to agree with deletion here: "smoldering" is a funny word, but it's not used uniquely enough to constitute a running gag, and the wiki can't be a concordance. Trey56 05:55, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

For a common word such as "smoldering" You'd need at least 5-10 references in toons, with at least 3-4 of them used in an unusual way. Wait a few toons, see where that gets you. I have to agree on what E.L Cool says too. In fact, since the Advertisement is hosted offsite, and probably made by other people mainly, it shouldn't really be used as a basis for "quotes." Or, due to it being on the H*R Site, but being offlinked, it still counts? ColdReactive

Actually, I don't think having the ad hosted on another domain means anything here. And I'm pretty sure it was written by TBC. It's just their style. So, yes, it counts, but still not enough. — Elcool ^(talk)_(contribs) 14:33, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I never heard of the concept of using "smoldering" in with "crater", and I thought craters don't smolder, unless I get my understanding of the definition wrong about that. I think you guys are right that it may not be a running gag, but it does seem to be some sort of 'inside joke' regardless, with Strong Bad using this word. I was the one who made this page, by the way, and I do wonder if a demotion to 'inside joke' would be far better than leaving it as a 'running gag'.--70.190.0.24 20:00, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I personally like this article for reasons I can't quite place (perhaps it's what Trey said about the word itself being a fun one). Still, I can't come up with any substantive argument for keeping an article about a word (a mildly uncommon one, but still not extremely unusual) being largely used in normal ways (taking into account the "money" exception, of course). "I like it" isn't much of an argument, so I'm not going to put it out there. Heimstern Läufer 02:36, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Maybe "Smoldering Crater" could be listed as a running gag if it is used again. Strong Bad seems to like that phrase. Or rather, TBC does. But until then, I really don't think that this is notable because the word is used pretty normally in all cases, besides the money one. BALEET! --Acam30 03:07, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
