[edit] Commentary Transcript

(Commentary by: Matt Chapman, Mike Chapman)

MATT: I went to film school, Mike, so I need to make storyboards. That are really bad drawings of our characters.

MIKE: Uh... Well, these... Is this kind of what inspired you to make the cartoon look all crazy? Was the storyboard drawings?

MATT: Well, cause you told me I should do that. I was just drawing them really quickly...

MIKE: It was my fault?

MATT: No, no! Wait, 'fault'? Uh...

MIKE: So you were drawing the storyboards quickly, and I liked them better the way they looked there than—

MATT: Yeah. Like that picture.

MIKE: Like that, yeah.

MATT: Look, I keep getting Coach Z's hat wrong. {Mike laughs} I make it on the top instead of down low like it really is.

MIKE: So this music that you can hear in the background is pretty much the Pitfall 2 music.

MATT: Yeah. {stutters} A chunk of it.

MIKE: Just a chunk of it. Or at least it's how I remember it.

MATT: {hums the tune} Um, look, see he's floating there, and you were like, "Wait, that's not how you were going to do it?" I think I just started to make the cartoon—

MIKE: Yeah, just regular.

MATT: And you were like, "You're not gonna make it that spastic style?" And I said, "Okay." {Of the tiny picture of Homestar on top of a mountain} Look at this— look at that drawing! Look at how pointless that is! You can barely see what's going on in that drawing! {Mike laughs} Why did I bother?

MIKE: It looks exactly like what we made.

MATT: Yeah, I guess.

MIKE: And that drawing of Homestar's body and legs. It's very accurate.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: Maybe we should do storyboards more often.

MATT: Yeah, but then all of, we'd have to draw them really well, or all our cartoons will end up looking like The Yello Dello.

MIKE: Oh... Steve Irwin.

MATT: Dear Strong Bad, I'm sad. {Mike laughs} Look at that pimp hat that Homestar's wearing! {Mike laughs again} It's supposed to be one of those Aussie hats, but it ends up looking like a Supafly hat.

MIKE: What do you think the last cartoon we did storyboards on was?

MATT: Uh, I don't know. We drew storyboards for that "Not the 150th Email".

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: 149 pernt 5. {imitating Strong Sad} "Uh, {imitating Michael Stipe} oh, I dunno Homestar, that looks awfully dangerous."

MIKE: I guess you didn't finish.
