[edit] Portuguese

Hi, just want to explain something that's a little complicated. First, thanks for starting on Portuguese subtitles! However, we go by the ISO standard codes and as such there is no special code for the Brazilian dialect of Portuguese. "br" is reserved for the language Breton. So we've moved stuff to fix it, but in the future please use "pt" for Portuguese subtitles. And again, thanks for your contributions! Wait, I wrote "bt"? Blame the keyboard! I'ma go fix that, like, right now. -20eric06 19:42, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
PS. I meant "br", which is for "Brazillian Portguese", "pt" is for "Portgueuse", which comes from Portugal and not Brazil. -20eric06 19:43, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, but the standard for these language codes does not recognize Brazilian Portuguese as distinct. See the Wikipedia resource I cited above. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:45, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Wait, this all is a misunderstaing lets just forget it all. Can I delete this now? -20eric06 19:50, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
It's your userspace, that's all up to you. Me, I prefer to keep my talk page accessible. And in case it wasn't sufficiently communicated, it's great that you're adding these subtitles. Thanks! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 19:51, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Will you be translating character names any time soon? --Trogga 20:33, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I think that names should not be translate. Also, there are not right translations for some of the characters, so I'll keep them as they are. -20eric06 21:07, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
See also HRWiki talk:Subtitles#Translation of Proper Names, where the consensus seems to be not to translate names. Loafing 21:13, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't how the Portuguese translate names, but I think descriptive names like "King of Town" and "Little Girl" should be translated. Note that in French "Homestar Runner" is still "Homestar Runner" while "The King of Town" is "Le Roi de la Ville". --Trogga 21:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

It is actually ISO conform to tag documents as "pt-br", just as we use "en-us" for the English versions for the subtitles. Now, it would be much better for the wiki if we could tag those subtitles as "pt", because then we would have covered all Portuguese speaking countries. The question is how different Portuguese Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese actually are. Would someone in Portugal understand your subtitles? (And so you see why it's a good idea not to delete discussions on talk pages ;-) ) Loafing 21:10, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, no, they won't understand much, some words are different. I can't list any as I don't know any that are different, I just know that some are different for each. -20eric06 21:12, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
According to Wikipedia, there are "a couple of thousands" words different as well as differences in grammar. I think this does force us to move the subtitles from pt to pt-br. (Good jorb on those translations, by the way!) Loafing 21:21, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree with pt-br. Trey56 21:44, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
20eric06, I've moved this discussion to Category talk:Brazilian Portuguese Subtitles so that you won't get a "new messages" message every time somebody makes a comment about this. Feel free to delete or keep this section as you so wish. As others have said previously, thanks so much for translating! Trey56 22:32, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I've known you for what feels like forever, and I can't believe that I didn't know (or horribly forgot) that you made this! This is pretty neat, and my late congratulations for getting on the site! Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 00:21, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
