It is common knowledge that the citizens of Free Country, USA are ecology-minded. They demonstrate this by committing or referencing the act of tree hugging. This phenomenon is sometimes referenced in Videlectrix video games, usually by narrators.

  • Strong Sad's LamentHomsar's evite to Strong Sad claims that "Most (all) of the live acts will be to hug a tree." Strong Sad also says that the last time Homsar invited him to something, he had to hug a tree.
  • Email army — In his attempt to persuade Strong Bad to join the Homestarmy and invade Strong Badia, Homestar says "We'll see if those trees you're always hugging save you when Gordon Lightfoot's creeping 'round your back stair!"
  • Hallrunner — If you try to "jump" the bat, a message says "It was a bat. It's too high up. You hug a tree." You get 0 points as a result of this.
  • Peasant's Quest — Hugging the tree at the hay bale produces a reference to a well-known Byrds song, Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season).
  • Email bottom 10 — Number 4 on Strong Bad's Bottom 10 is this one time when Homestar Runner forced him to hug a tree for some unknown reason.
