[edit] Misspelling?
I understand that nearly every dictionary lists as the only definition of "tonite" the explosive. Here's a case where I feel the dictionaries are behind the curve of actual usage. A misspelling implies, to me, a usually unintentional spelling of a word which varies from the norms. So, color and colour are not misspellings but variant forms, but culor would be a misspelling of the word.
Now, it's my contention that tonite is emerging (or, truthfully, has already emerged) as a variant spelling which is appropriate in some contexts. Certainly it's not an appropriate form for formal writing (and 2nite most definitely is not) but it's an instantly comprehended variant which few bat an eye at these days. To illustrate: if I said "I went to teh store" you would comprehend clearly, but you would in all likelihood flinch at teh for the. Tonite simply is nowhere near as flinch-worthy - and I contend that's because it's not really a misspelling after all.
So, I'm proposing we find a milder, less POV way to characterize tonite than a "misspelling". I will think it over, hope you will as well. - Qermaq - (T/C) 03:23, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. It's obviously not a "misspelling", it's a "cool spelling". I'm'a change it. Loafing
