[edit] 403'd!! (Ow! My permissions!)

*When browsing directly to a domain sub-directory (e.g. www.homestarrunner.com/stinkogame/), instead of the expected 404'd page an HTTP 403 authorization error is displayed.

This is not a Goof or even much of an oddity. This is very distinct from the (legitimate) Goof that is found on the old 404'd page. It just means that TBC didn't make a "403'd!!" page. (For reference, if the old Goof was still in play, this link would not display properly.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:53, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

It's definitely not a goof of the page itself but it's still an issue with the 404 system as a whole. I don't know of a better place to document it that this page. As for a 403, it can just redirect to the 404 page as well. In any case, it's still a goof (or a bug) of sorts so I think it should be documented on the wiki. --Stux 14:56, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't see how it's a Goof or a bug, as 403 and 404 indicate completely different things. Whatever the case, if it is a "Goof" of sorts, it's not TBC's fault. We typically have a rule against mentioning Flash artifacts (things inherent in Flash that TBC have no control over), so why mention an HTML protocol... I can't even in good faith call it an "artifact" because it's not a bug... an HTML protocol feature? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 19:05, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
I think your argument confuses technical aspects with functional aspects. What I'm talking about is the functionality of the website as a whole and TBC *do* have control of such aspects. That's in fact what this 404 redirect page is for: it's designed so that users don't get a boring 404 page that looks just like the 403 page that they're getting. I doubt it was TBC's intention for that 403 page to look the way that it does now. So I think it's a thing that can and should be documented on the wiki. --Stux 20:45, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
I can't say I agree, and think noting something like this to be entirely unprecedented and fairly pointless. This fact was originally an edit of a fact concerning a very real bug regarding the old 404 page that no longer applies. Does anyone else have any input? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 13:12, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I too, would like to hear everyone else's input on the matter. I don't think this item is as pointless as you say it is, especially given how much attention to detail we give to all other aspects of the site and its toons. --Stux 16:10, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Does anybody have any opinion on this matter? Right now it's just Jay and me at opposite ends and with completely opposite views. At this rate, I might end up bringing back the removed fact and then Jay will hack my account so it looks like I turned into a vandal and then I get infinitely banned and Jay goes to Jail for Hacking and a big scandal forms and the wiki it shut down due to bad publicity arising from this scandal and TBC shuns everybody and the HR website is shut down! It's a horribly, horribly sad ending and think about the kittens! --Stux 23:54, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
It isn't necessarily a goof, it's just something The Brothers Chaps didn't add, and they didn't need to add. Plus, the fun fact was only added because it was on the old 404'd page, and isn't quite as relevant anymore. On the other hand, though, the 403 page could easily redirect to 404'd, so it's likely The Brothers Chaps forgot (which might be a goof). Also, that boring 403 page doesn't help the site's aesthetics. However, I'm leaning just slightly toward removing the fun fact. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 01:16, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

[edit] URL

Do we know what the URL for this page is? I get that 404error.html is the previous 404'd page's URL, but until recently, "apagethatdoesntexist.html" would have led to that 404 error page (as would neon404d, which links to the Neon 404'd page now just like apagethatdoesntexist does). I held off asking until I realized that it is used in another place on the wiki. How is it determined what the actual URL is? The Knights Who Say Ni 23:42, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

This is a question that may not have an easy answer. Unlike most custom 404 solutions, this one does not provide a redirect to a permanent page. For example, the source for this page has the same content as "apagethatdoesntexist.html" and it isn't trying to redirect to any page. --Stux 23:47, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Recently Elcool claimed that apagethatdoesntexist is the file name, complicating the situation further. Has this somehow been proven? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc 20:26, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
Sorry. I didn't mean to complicate the situation. I thought it was the file name. I guess I was wrong. My bad. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 04:58, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
