[edit] Now or ever

It's come to my attention that users use this template for different purposes. Some users use it to demonstrate that once they have placed it there, they are going to be working on a large, single edit, or a long string of continuous edits, to remove the notice a while later when the page is done. Other users may tag the page with it, edit some, then leave the tag on the page when he or she has stopped editing. This has led some users to believe that they should not add substantial content to it just in case another user is working on a large edit. I would like to discuss some sort of rule or standardization for this sort of diversity in use. — Lapper (talk) 04:44, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, it's supposed to be the former. You're not supposed to leave it on a page to "save your place." Whenever I notice that a page with the template on it hasn't been edited in a while, I remove it and change the page to a stub (or, in the case of the "inprogress" template, I change the section to a section stub). — It's dot com 04:48, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
That's how I've felt it should be used. Should a notice be added somewhere? — Lapper (talk) 04:52, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
How about:
This page is in progress.
As always, you are welcome to assist by editing this page, but be aware that another user is currently adding and/or changing substantial content. This template should be removed once the page is complete or work will be completed at a later time.

Or perhaps "once you're done with it for the time being" or something along those lines. — It's dot com 04:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm starting to lean towards "or you're just feeling absolutely lazy like I am today. Scalawag." Something along those lines. --Stux 05:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

......Maybe we should only edit these if someone hasn't edited it in over 2 weeks. HomestarBad12 22:43, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

This is still a problem nearly four years later. I've tweaked the template and added some verbiage that hopefully will encourage the correct use of these tags. See Template talk:inprogress#This tag is not a claim for more information. — It's dot com 21:11, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
