| |

| |
- | I think this deserves a better title. When I think of the word "nickname," I think of something people constantly call each other. Most of the appearances on this page are one-time gags. Maybe rename it to "Names Characters Have Called Each Other?" Or maybe just "Names?" I don't know... {{User:MichaelXX2/sig}} 03:09 10 October, 2009 (UTC)

- | == Cleanup tag ==
| |
- |
| |
- | So, I just added a cleanup tag. My reasoning is basically this: The things listed on the current page stretch the definition of "nickname" far beyond the acceptable limit, in my mind. I know I'm not alone in this thinking, judging from threads by Defender and Michael just above. They both raised similar concerns, but not much seems to have come of it. Some of the discussion has been focused on changing the name of the page rather than cleaning up the content, but I'm not convinced that's the way to go. The threshold of what's included on the page now seems far too loose and broad to be summed up in any tight page name, it seems to me. I would suggest a page focus and content trimming. -[[Special:Contributions/132.183.151.213|132.183.151.213]] 23:17, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

- | == Marshie? ==
| |
- |
| |
- | I think it's pretty obvious that Marshie has alot of nicknames,but they don't appear to be listed.I would make perfect sense if we added him to the "Minor Characters" section since he has so many nicknames. {{User:Wasd98/sig}} — 14:56 15 November, 2009 (UTC)

- | == Proposed cleanup plan ==
| |
- |
| |
- | Well, if we're ever going to get this cleaned up, we need a better definition of a nickname. I propose the following limitations:
| |
- |
| |
- | A nickname must:
| |
- | *If it is written, be either capitalized, in a context in which capitalization is not necessary (everything is lower case), or clearly a name ("dumpus").
| |
- | *Must be directed at someone by someone. ("hott type" is just some words on a shirt, and so does not count)
| |
- |
| |
- | It is not a nickname if:
| |
- | *It is referring to something or someone the Named is formally dressed as and/or playing the part of. (plays, Halloween, movies, etc.)
| |
- | *It is clearly referring to something that the Named *is*, whether actual or imagined. ("A real state trooper," "young whipper-snapper", etc.)
| |
- | *It is an unintentional misspelling of a proper name.
| |
- | *It refers to a representation of the Named (picture, robot, etc.), and not the Named himself. ("no-neck," "dacheese," etc.)
| |
- | *It is simply meant to be a descriptive phrase.
| |
- | *It is clearly an alternate proper name for the Named. ("Mr. Umpire," "Pixel Ghost," etc.)
| |
- |
| |
- | Furthermore, I would suggest that, under each character, there be 3 categories of nicknames:
| |
- | *Intentional ("Dairy Queen")
| |
- | *Unintentional ("Tubbs")
| |
- | *Self-given ("Homestar Bunmaker")
| |
- |
| |
- | Any thoughts?
