- | + | == Domain == | |
- | + | I know I sound like a scunge and all but, I have absolutely no way of paying for a domain. If someone took on this job I would add donation links and all to my website and the whole shibang. I know this is off topic to [http://homestarrunner.com homestarrunner.com] but this is the only place people view. {{User:Pertmywert/sig}} 06:32, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- | + | ||
- | + | :I don't think anybody here's going to want to pay for your own domain. {{User:Gafaddict/sig}} 10:53, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- | + | ::You never know, but I really doubt someone will pay for a domain for you. I think for now you should stay with what you've got. As long as your website works and people can use it, it can grow really big. If the site becomes really succesful, popular and have heaps of content, you can then think about getting a domain name and maybe paying for hosting. Remember that the H*R Wiki was originally just a subdomain of Joey's site (hrwiki.joeyday.com), which meant he didn't really pay anything extra for the wiki at first. Start small. It will take even a year to get the wiki fully started and having enough content to be a good resource. {{User:Rainer/sig}} 11:48, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

- | + | ||
- | + | I'm not quite sure where to put this idea, so i'll put it here. What about, instead of just the <nowiki>{{tobedeleted}}</nowiki> tag, we have a matching one for talk pages? Something like: <nowiki> {{talktobedeleted}} </nowiki> or something? The only reason i'm suggesting this is because when you put the <nowiki> {{tobedeleted}} </nowiki> tag on troll talk pages, the link takes you to a Talk:Talk:(pagename) page. If this is a bad idea or we already have something like this or if it's a good idea, let me know. --{{User:Smileyface11945/sig}} 18:06, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

+ | You wikipedia link system is slightly broken. When you write [[Wikipedia:Homestar Runner]] it points to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestar_Runner. It still works but eventually wikipedia may stop this workaround which so far is being preserved for histrorical reasons. Some discussion occured a couple of weeks ago about whether the old links should be done away with (they decided against it). Your site ought to change to the newer version just in case. [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2005-10-24/Multilingual redirects]] might be enlightening (that's a lot of wikipedia:'s in a row). (~~some guy at wikipedia who also happens to watch HR~~)

+ | :Yeah; I wasn't sure whether that was some kind of provision for people who preferred their 'Pedia in another language. Either way, I can't use the links, and have to type in "en" by hand. —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 18:28, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

+ | ==Build a Timeline?==
+ | |||
+ | I got an idea for a page: a complete timeline of every toon. When I first discovered H*R, I wanted to take it chronologically (which helps; e.g. you meet Homsar in the email that explains his name). However, I did it by simply going through the toons one genre at a time, overlooking some, then going through the sbemails from bottom to top. It would be nice to have something that showed where the toons fell in the chronology of sbemails. Aside from helping anyone who might be trying to do the same thing I did, it would be helpful to tell at a glance what predated what.
+ | |||
+ | One difficulty is that some toons are currently labelled only with the month and year, or even just the year, but I imagine some detective work could figure those out.
+ | |||
+ | So what about it, guys? Is it worth doing? And if so, what should I call it? [[Timeline]]? [[Chronology]]? —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 03:50, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :Don't we already have a timeline? How is that different from [[H*R.com updates 2005|H*R.com updates]]? — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 04:01, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::Hm... no, you're right, that's exactly what I was thinking of. It only goes back to sbemail #7, though; I guess I might make it a long-term goal to do some detective work on the release dates of the earliest days and update it. But not today! —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 04:08, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

+ | ::::Yea, sadly that was the best I could come up with for certain (I used [http://www.livejournal.com/community/homestar_runner/2003/ livejournals], and a bit of [http://www.fark.com/ fark]). The one thing further we could do, would be to estimate many of the other toons and main pages, such as the Halloween toons being C. October 31st, 2000, ect. But for those, I think it would be best to use C, to denote 'circa' or 'about', and perhaps B and A for before and after a certain date, if that becomes applicable. That too though, could only go so far. We won't be able to guess everything, just anything reasonable, probably mostly holiday toons. I'll try and get on it later if I have time, you're welcome to start it up too if you want. 2002 and 2003 are pretty much totally finished, maybe a bit of 2002 could be done, but 2001 and 2000 could use some guestimation. {{User:Thunderbird L17/Siggie}} 07:15, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ===Live Journals Side Note:===
+ | If you go to the livejournals site, you'll notice the topics and subjects slowly grow over 2001, 2002, and 2003, but by 2004 they start to shrink again, around the time of the Wiki's creation. Now they're just about back to the state they were in in 2002. It could just be a coincidence, or the Wiki may have just about replaced the use of the livejournals site. Also if you look at any subjects about 'what happened when' type questions, they usually end with something along the lines of 'you know we have a wiki... Right?' Although it does still have a nice exchange of various H*R type avatars and stuff, and cool news such as [http://www.ccawards.com/2004.htm this]. I even found Tom making a visit over there, letting them know about our 2005 pledge drive. Anyways, there's my big contribution to discussion for the day. +
+ | :::::::Because if you can edit a page, it should read "edit" at the top, not "view source". — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 20:29, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::Noo.. "view source" is just for protected pages. {{User:E.L. Cool/sig}} 20:38, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :::::::::Then you're giving conflicting reports here. If you go to [[H*R.com updates 2005]], which is protected from being moved but not from being edited, do you see "edit" or "view source"? — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 20:43, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::::I see "View Source" on the Main Page, but I do see "Edit" on the Updates page. - [[User:KieferSkunk|KieferSkunk]] 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :::::::::::On pages protected from editing, I see "view source". On pages protected from moves, the "move" tag is missing. {{User:E.L. Cool/sig}} 20:58, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::::::Good. That's how it should be. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | :::::::::Well, my problem with the Main Page was that there was no visible way for me to edit the What's New section. I couldn't see any indication that I had edit access to that page at all, until Dot Com pointed me to the template. - [[User:KieferSkunk|KieferSkunk]] 20:44, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::::That's intentional. We tried having a link to edit the what's new section, but it just got repeatedly vandalized. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :::::::::::Okay, then - where do I go to find the edit links for the individual templates, in case I find something to edit in the future? - [[User:KieferSkunk|KieferSkunk]] 21:21, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::::::The template to edit the ''What's new?'' section on the main page is found at the bottom of the list of '''Templates used on this page:''' when you edit it. But please, it's not for general pruning. Only for actualy updates of the site. — {{User:Lapper/sig}} 21:28, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :::::::::::::Also, KieferSkunk, the template you use is the one [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Template:whatsnew&diff=193665&oldid=193214 you used before], if that helps. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:48, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | ::::::::::::::Figured that. :) I meant in a general sense, how do I get to the templates without knowing the direct link. That helps. Thanks. :) - [[User:KieferSkunk|KieferSkunk]] 22:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
+ | |||
+ | :::::::::::::::Plus a shortcut I always use, just click 'view source' on the main page, and below the source code box there should be links to all the Templates for that page. Same goes for if you edit a page, they're all right below the 'Save Page', 'Show Preview' buttons. That's what they're there for, so you can easily edit the templates on a page, without having to go searching all over for them. {{User:Thunderbird L17/Siggie}} 23:49, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

+ | ::Boy is that sad. I spend about 99% of ''my'' time on the wiki. And the 1% is for eating. But I don't think bots can manage to shut down the entire wiki. Odd. {{User:Bubsty/sig}} 23:50, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

+ | :::What motivates a troll? One motivation is '''Attention Seeking'''. Lately, these types of trolls have been using profanity. They love it when other users talk about their actions.
