== Numbering the Tweets ==

So, there are many tweets and possibly more to come. However, when a tweet references some running gag in the Homestar Runner Universe, it is added to the "appearances" section of that running gag's page, but just as @StrongBadActual. Should we have some kind of numbering system for the tweets, so if the tweets repeat a joke, you can identify which tweets and referencing what joke? I feel bunching all the tweets together instead of listing them seperately makes it a bit confusing. It's like if we just put "Videlectrix" whenever the website referenced a joke. - {{User:Catjaz63/sig}} 00:38, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

For example, if we number them based on the order they are added (eg, 001, 002, 003), but we forget to list one of them (so the fifth one is written as 004 instead of 005), do we change all of the surrounding numbers (008 becomes 009 and so on) or just tack it on as an afterthought (adding 004 as 004a, for example)?

I think Purple Wrench's suggestion of numbering the tweet (001, 002, etc...) and displaying that numbering would suffice.  It actually wouldn't be too difficult to modify the {{tl|tweet}} template to support such a feature via an optional parameter.  The template can also automatically build the anchor link so that a tweet can be linked like so: <code><nowiki>[[@StrongBadActual#tw005|some link]]</nowiki></code>.  And if typing all that is too much, we can also create a template to automatically link to tweets! That said, it's too late for me to do such changes tonight. ::::::My concern with that, like I said before, is that numbering like "tw005" doesn't allow for potential mistakes to be made. If tw005 should actually be tw006, then tw006, tw007, tw008 etc all have to be changed. If we use a numbering system that doesn't concern itself with order, then no matter what order the tweets are added to this page, they will all be linked correctly. Any mistake will only affect a single tweet, rather than all the tweets before or after it. ::I don't think it's actually a gif. The Edgarware animation was likely a gif that got converted to a "gifv" or an mp4 or something like that, so it wasn't terrible to convert it back. But this started out as a video, not a gif.

Hosting them on a mirror requires both server costs and the appropriate bandwidth. The wiki has been able to reduce its server costs considerably (and that's why there are no more fundraisers for it), but at the expense of both speed and bandwidth. That's why it practically went down after [[April Fool 2014]] from all the hype.

So there's a bit of a problem currently. Both the [[Instagram]] and [[@StrongBadActual|Twitter]] run off the handle @strongbadactual due to the way that Instagram and Twitter allow for targeting of other users or mentions. We need to be documenting the videos that Strong Bad posts in the main namespace. Strong Bad's been tweeting brand-new, albeit short, Homestar Runner content at us, and the only place we even have it transcribed is on [[User:Purple Wrench/sandbox|a user's personal subpage]]. There's recently been a question of whether people plagiarizing tweets (not for posterity or archival, but rather for impersonation) is considered legal or not. Somehow I doubt this particular case is even going to be addressed until that's been thoroughly decided.
:::::::While TBC's tweets are the heart of the matter here, I purposely paraphrase [nearly] everyone else mentioned in a retweet and attribute it to them. This provides just enough context to explain Strong Bad's responses, while also acknowledging that other people's tweets are not written by TBC (and not overloading on details ''too'' much).
:::::::I should also mention that, at least on my version of the page, we are linking to the tweets. Embedding of that kind is not possible at this time on the wiki, and many other wikis and web services don't allow it either. So providing a link accomplishes the same goal through slightly less convenience for the user.

:I was actually planning on updating the {{tl|post}} template so that the page could be split into sections by month (and we can bring back the TOC). But my plan involved removing the automatic header detection (where the table header is automatically added based on the hidden count value) and instead manually added the header.  It is not something I've had the time to work on.  Although not the same as splitting the page into more pages, it would make editing easier since only smaller sections would be edited at a time. It may even be enough to curtail the need to split each year into subpages, but i'm not sure.  Another alternative is to have the sections appear inline much like the [[Fonts]] page (the automatic header detection wouldn't have to be removed in that case). == Link vs. Quote Tweet ==

Whenever there's a tweet with a clickable box in it that leads somewhere, we simply call that a "link". Which makes sense. But I'm realizing that there's more than one type of link. Twitter terminology is confusing, but my current understanding is:
*A tweet that links to another tweet is known as a "quote tweet", which is actually a type of retweet.
*If it's a link to somewhere else, then it's just a link in the text that Twitter decided to turn into a box, probably because marketing research has shown that people find boxes friendly. (Twitter does not do this on quote tweets or tweets that contain an image, probably because marketing research has shown that people find too many boxes at once confusing.)
Why am I bringing this up? I guess it's been bugging me that we talk about Strong Bad ''linking to someone's tweet'' the same way that we talk about him ''linking to the store'', even though while these things look similar on screen, they're quite different actions. Maybe we can add a <tt>quote</tt> parameter in {{t|post}} to say that "''This is a Quote Tweet of x''", or "''This Tweet quotes x''". Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. :I don't have a strong preference. I feel like this would be a better idea if we were just starting out, but going back and differentiating between Quote Tweets and link boxes sounds like some work, especially since they're visually the same thing, and a Quote Tweet is still technically a link. ::I don't know that it would be an unreasonable amount of work compared to the upkeep we already do in the tweet archives. Ctrl+F <tt>|link=</tt>, determine whether it's a quote or an external link, change <tt>link</tt> to <tt>quote</tt>, maybe tweak wording somewhat depending on what wording we choose in the template. Regarding wording, I think I slightly prefer the second option, "This Tweet quotes ''x''", as 1) not everyone will readily know what a Quote Tweet is and 2) it grammatically mirrors "is a reply to ''x''" (that is, ''x'' is the person, not the tweet itself). Twitter added [https://help.twitter.com/en/using-twitter/how-to-use-alt-gif Image Descriptions/Alternative text] a while back, but @StrongBadActual hasn't used it until {{p|l=https://twitter.com/StrongBadActual/status/1544018234327924736 this week}}. I think we ought to be transcribing these - beyond being descriptive and aiding in accessibility, they also include little jokes and references for an additional level of humor. Unfortunately I don't know how to edit [[Template:post]] but adding an "alt" field (styled similarly to the "reply" or "link" fields) would be the best approach. --{{User:Bleu Ninja/sig}} 16:24, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

So I came across this other Twitter account that operates under the identity of Strong Sad (@depressiosads). It just tweets random Strongsadian musings and other such stuff. I can’t tell if it’s official or just a role playing fan because it doesn’t have any OOC disclaimers, and the account has posted a couple of very official-looking original images here and there. Just thought I’d bring it to attention.
:Hmmm, I see what you mean. It's sort of hard to tell if the site ({{@|depressiosads}}) is official or fan based.  I am slightly inclined to believe it's fan based because of the number of youtube video postings (a lot more than @SBA) and the tumblr link seems to be made by Strong Bad.  That and @StrongBadActual has made no mention of making fun of his brother's Twitter account. As someone who's fiddled around with decompiling and editing in the past, I have to say that the simple shapes and colors of H*R make it pretty easy to create (or piece together) official-looking artwork.
::* Compare to how Strong Bad's accounts are used - there are almost ''never'' roleplay-style "did this today" posts, it's either acknowledging and interacting with fans, sharing and promoting new releases, or offering a behind-the-scenes link. The SS account has no link to homestarrrunner.com and zero fan interaction.
::* A bit of Occam's Razor here... I don't see this being something that TBC would spend time on. Even if [[The Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show Interview - 7 July 2014|Matt had expressed interest in giving Strong Sad a tumblr]], I can't imagine they'd spend their time broadcasting [https://twitter.com/depressiosads/status/1605392824467234816 pretty weak jokes] that rarely get more than ten likes. Secret stuff like "Strong Sad's Lament", [[Coach Z pukes in dude's toupee]], or [[Screenland - 24 Apr 2017|slash/slash]] are linked or hinted from official uploads, it's not like them to do ARG-style totally unlinked-to things like this. A lack of OOC disclaimers isn't any indication that it's official, there are countless gimmick accounts that don't specify they're gimmicks.

== New Layout ==

For those watching, I've started reorganizing the tweet pages into separate month pages, starting with [[@StrongBadActual Tweets 2014|2014]] and now [[@StrongBadActual Tweets 2015|2015]].  I wanted to get some feedback on this before proceeding further.  Please note that while these first few years are "relatively sparse" on tweets, subsequent years have not been.  Nevertheless, I'm planning on splitting all years by month for consistency.  Hopefully this shouldn't make it too much harder to add new tweets. (The hardest thing being switching to a new page on a new month.)  '''UPDATE:''' This was previously discussed here: [[#Splitting Pages]] and also covered here: [[Talk:@StrongBadActual Tweets 2023#Process for creating new Months]].

I've already mentioned it [[Talk:@ronginald#Format and Content Update|here]] but this might be a good time to look into tweaking the look of the table (lines, highlights, background colors, that sort of thing).  

Last, but not least, I've been prototyping a means to make linking to tweets a little bit easier.  They can be seen [[User:Stux/post-sandbox|on my post development sandbox]].  It's the symbols "⧉" and "🔗" on the bottom right corner of the date cells.  The "🔗" is complete, and it's just a hyperlink to that entry.  The "⧉" is still a work in progress and it generates {{t|postref}} template code for that entry.  Unfortunately, the only place I can put it for now is in the tool tip, but inspecting the element allows for easy copy-paste.  Ideally I'd like a pop-up that lets you copy the text but I'm not sure CSS facilitates that.  

Again, I welcome feedback on all these items.  Please feel free to [[User:Stux/post-devel|edit the development template]] or its [[User:Stux/post-sandbox|development sandbox]] as needed. :: That's a very good question, and I've been trying to make sure this isn't as big of an issue: first, the yearly pages (such as [[@StrongBadActual Tweets 2015]]) will have to remain, and since they transclude the monthly pages, all the tweet links will still point to the correct entry.  This is important because not all pages use the {{t|postref}} template.  In fact, several tweet entries link to other tweets from the same year using the anchor link by itself.  
:: Second, as you mentioned the {{t|prs}} template (used by the {{t|postref}} template) can be updated to link to the monthly pages instead, but this is optional given the first item.  
:: However, I noticed an issue that remains with this new scheme: while yearly pages will be fine (e.g. "2021" tweets), if a tweet in a monthly page from December (e.g. "2021 Dec" tweets), links to a tweet in November of that year (e.g. "2021 Nov" tweets), using only the anchor (e.g. <code><nowiki>[[#999999999999|this tweet]]</nowiki></code>) then the link won't work on the monthly page.  The only solution for this would be to convert these links to use the {{t|prs}} template. I had long forgotten that this was also one of the reasons I started this project. :::So far this seems like a good way to resolve the issues the Twitter pages seem to be having due to length. I do like the "🔗" anchor links in the sandbox. Took me a while to realize the "⧉" function is meant to help those that are editing the wiki, but it could be useful, though I'm not sure of the feasibility of something directly copy-pastable.
