On September 25, 2004, They Might Be Giants performed at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA. They were joined on-stage by Puppet Homestar Runner and Puppet Marshie. They performed an original tune with Marshie, and then a unique rendition of The Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends". The complete audio of this show may be purchased at They Might Be Giants' official music store (see external links) and includes the above tracks plus two bonus sound checks featuring Homestar and Marshie.

Below are the transcripts of the segments of the show which include performances by Homestar Runner and Marshie.

Note: Many of the lyrics are unintelligible, especially in the chorus to "With a Little Help".

Marshy's Song

FLANSBURGH: Ladies and gentlemen, a couple of months ago it was our privilege to, uh, to team up with the fine corporation {audience cheers} based right out out of here in the fine state of Georgia, ladies and gentlemen. If you haven't seen the "Experimental Film" video that they put together at the, uh, place, we'd like to invite you to check it out. Um, we have some representatives from the organization with us here tonight. Um, Mr. Linnell, will you, uh, introduce our first spokesmodel?

LINNELL: Um... what do we, how do we do this? Marty start the song, then... the whole place gets crazy?

FLANSBURGH: Uh, I think we should start, I think we should start with the spotlight on so we can cherish every moment of what we're about to experience.

LINNELL: Okay, well that would be a job for our lighting man... Ladies and gentlemen, our next guest is, uh, cylindrical. Okay, go ahead Marty. {Marty counts time with his drumsticks and the music begins.}

MARSHIE: Hey juys! {like "guys" but with a "j" sound}

DEEP VOICE: Hey, Marshie, how ya doin?

MARSHIE: Pretty good!

I'm feelin' like Milton Berle
I'm lookin like vanilla swirl
So come along and dance with me girl
What's the matter, don't you have any legs?

FLANSBURGH: Here we go.

LINNELL: Save it for the show.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Let's do it. Marty! {Marty counts time with his drumsticks and the music begins.} A lot of people-- I've heard a lot of talk. A lot of different types of talk from a lot of different types of people. They've been talkin' 'bout stuff that I don't wanna hear. These people've been talkin' bout... sports.

What would you do if I took off my shoes
And threw them out into the street?
Would you lend me a pair
Of your finest brown loafers?
I promise not to have stinky feet! Oh!

(Try with a little help from my friends)

Oh, I'm always givin' high fives

(By with a little help from my friends)

We hang out at high five fives

(By with a little help from my friends)

FLANSBURGH: See you later, Homestar.

Soundcheck - Homestar and Friends

HOMESTAR RUNNER: I'd like to bring it down during the soundcheck. I'd like to dedicate this one to all the foam fingers in the place tonight.

What would you do
If I started singin' out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me? I hope not.
Lend me your ears and I'll try not to tickle 'em
But that depends on how much hair you have in your ears. Oh!

(By with a little help from my friends)

Oh, I'm always gettin' by

(High with a little help from my friends)

Soundcheck - Marshy Make-Up

FLANSBURGH: The rehearsal tape that we'll all cherish.

LINNELL: {in deep voice} Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm hand... to Marshie.

MARSHIE: {singing}
I'm feelin' like Milton Berle
I'm lookin' like vanilla swirl
C'mon and dance with me, girl!
What's wrong with you?
I know you're not a good dancer
Neither am I
I don't have legs
I don't have legs!

I'm not a mushroom!

Or some kind of puffy cloud

Get out of my dressing room!

I'm a clown!
Where are you going with that thing?
Don't you want to come back here
With that thing?
I thought I told you to reserve that thing for me!
My name's all over it!

That's me!
Oh, man, they're singing about me! (Marshie!)
Hey, this is like the greatest day of my entire (Marshie!) short life!

I love you aallllllllll!

Fun Facts

  • When Marshie says "Get out of my dressing room" in Marshie Make-Up, it may be a reference to Malloween Commercial, in which there is a shot of Marshie in his dressing room.
  • On the album art that is downloaded when you buy the MP3's, "Homestar" is spelled "Homestarr" and "Marshie" is spelled "Marshy"! "Homestarr" is most likely a reference to Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who originaly sung "With a Little Help from My Friends".
  • The song "Jazz in C", which was also performed at this concert, thanks members of the audience and a few of the show's guest stars. It gives special thanks to Homestar.
  • "fry guys" is a reference to the McDonald's mascots The Fry Guys, later called The Fry Kids.
  • When Homestar says "I'm about to pee my pants", it may be a reference to A Jumping Jack Contest.
  • When Marshie says "First one to eat a million wins", it may be a reference to the show.
