Those things are usually used as part of coding for templates. Depending what you write when you add the template to an article, the {{{1}}} will be replaced with what you typed when the template is viewed as part of the article. For example, take the personal image template:

This image is being used as one of the personal images allowed to [[User:{{{1}}}|{{{1}}}]].

Now, if I was to put this in an image's summary by typing {{personal-image|The Chort}}, this is what you would get:

This image is being used as one of the personal images allowed to The Chort.

{{{2}}} is used if a second amount of text needs to be included in the template. This way, we can easily customise each template to suit the purposes of the article that it is added to, such as linking to the owner of a personal image. Hope this helps. – The Chort 18:18, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
