| |
| - | Hey Aurora (or is it Amanda?), it's Dot com. I'm wanting to move forward with the new STUFF stuff, and to help rally the wiki community around my idea, I'd like to set up a STUFF sandbox so we can practice the new format and get used to it. For that, though, I need to set up some styles on the [[MediaWiki:Monobook.css|master style sheet page]]. Something like:

| |
| - | ''{code deleted}''

| - | Not being an admin, I can't do it myself. Can you help me with this, or do I need to take it to Joey? Thanks. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 03:47, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | Why did you revert my edit regarding Marzipan's skeleton on That a Ghost? —[[User:Shawn81|Shawn81]] 13:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | :Because we generally omit any fun facts that come from viewing the Flash file. If we accepted everything that came from viewing the Flash file as canon, then we'd have to say that characters frequenly lose limbs and appear out of nowhere. <small><tt>[[User:Homestar Coder|<span style="color:#8B0000;">Aurora the Homestar Coder</span>]]</tt></small> 14:27, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| |
| - | ::Good point. Nevertheless, I think that this fun fact is important because it helps to further elucidate Marzipan's unusual anatomy. Is there an alternate location that I should mention this? —[[User:Shawn81|Shawn81]] 21:52, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | ::: One thing I rarely agree with Aurora on is the treatment of .swf files. While it is true that we should not mention objects that DON'T appear outside the frame, like, say, missing limbs, objects that DO appear outside the frame but DON'T appear inside are generally noteworthy IMHO. Anyway, lemme check this out. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 21:59, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | ::::Your comment on the [[That A Ghost]] page was "you can see even more of it [Marzipan's skeleton] if you view the Flash file and make the window tall and skinny". I don't think this adds anything, because there's not even a description of what you can see. I looked at it, and all that's there is a few "bones" that make the bottom of her dress, just like the ones that make up The Strong Bad's and The Homestar Runner's shoes. I don't find that very noteworthy in this case. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 22:49, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | ::: It just bothers me when we're picking apart stuff that TBC never really intended us to see (except, perhaps, for "Homestache Runner", but this toon was made far before that). Maybe they left stuff like the rest of Marzipan's skeleton out of frame because they were dissatisfied with how it looked and wouldn't want it to be considered canon. <small><tt>[[User:Homestar Coder|<span style="color:#8B0000;">Aurora the Homestar Coder</span>]]</tt></small> 22:39, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | :::: I don't think this is a question of canon. I think that when they built Marzipan's skeleton, they built the whole thing without worrying what would be in and out of frame, and then when they put the toon together, part of it just happened to be below the black. But since it's only ''barely'' cut off, I don't think the additional wording above does anything to make the article more complete. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 22:49, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | ::::: Sorry, forgot to respond. Yeah, looking at it, there's not very much that's cut off in this case and the fact stands without needing to mention the .swf. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 22:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - |
| |
| - | :::::: I guess you guys are right. Still, there are a few bones that you don't see inside the frame. However, they are not much, and they don't really add anything to the fact that "Marzipan's skirt has bones". —[[User:Shawn81|Shawn81]] 02:46, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | ::::::I do agree that it's complicated—at least, more complicated than before. When I first thought up the design, I knew it would be. So it became my task to make the process as streamlined as possible. First of all, voting on a particular fact is just as easy as it's always been, maybe easier now that people don't have to strain themselves to come up with something unfunny. Making it easy to vote was important to me: you click "edit" next to the fact, you put in <tt><nowiki>#~~~</nowiki></tt>, you click save—no muss, no fuss (and the instructions on how to vote are front and center).<div style="text-indent:2em">As far as adding a new STUFF item goes, I guess there's a tradeoff between simplicity and attractiveness. I'd say it's worth it, considering how fed up so many users are with the current STUFF page. But I truly believe it won't seem as complicated once we get the hang of it. All you really have to remember are three templates: <tt><nowiki>{{checkstuffpage}}</nowiki></tt>, <tt><nowiki>{{stuffnew|...}}</nowiki></tt>, and <tt><nowiki>{{stuffmore|...}}</nowiki></tt>. Everything else is just cutting and pasting. At the very least, if somebody ''truly'' can't get it to work, all he or she needs to do it try their best, and someone will be along shortly to clean it up (like on the [[HRWiki:WikiTroll|WikiTroll]] page). — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 20:35, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)</div>

| - | <blockquote>In the June 2005 issue of ''Discover'', in the article "A double-blind, random, case-controlled, clinical, and thoroughly unscientific study of MIT nerds" (page 43), a full-page picture shows an MIT student named Amanda Seybold wearing a Trogdor T-shirt.</blockquote>
| |
| - | I realize there's around 10,000 MIT students, so it may be a longshot if she's not in your department, but I figured I'd ask anyway. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:45, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | :Hehehe, you should've checked [[Talk:Magazine Sightings]]. She lives in my dorm. :) She was rather excited that the H*R Wiki appreciated her T-shirt. {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} 21:48, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | ::Is it like a grad-student dorm or something? I moved back into the dorm to save money the last semester of my senior year, and it was decidedly ''not'' as much fun as when I was a freshman. I bet your mail gets mixed up, what with your names being so close. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 21:56, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| |
| - | :::No, I'm still in my undergrad dorm (I just graduated this month, and I don't move to the grad dorm until August). I can't recall our mail being mixed up, but everyone here knows everyone else, so it's unlikely that someone wouldn't know the difference between us ;) {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} 21:59, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | :::::''That's'' the picture? Hahahaha, it's Tuesday! I dunno if she's around for the summer. If she is, I can check with her. Of course, if that picture is already publically available on Discover's website, I don't know why you'd need permission anyway. {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} 23:31, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | ::::::Well, it's in [http://www.discover.com/issues/jun-05/features/mit-nerds/ this article], which is © 2004 The Walt Disney Company and the copyrighted property of Discover Magazine. So yeah, the image really isn't hers to give, I guess. The best we can do is link to it. And if we want, we can ask Discover Magazine for permission to use it. I'm not hopeful, but it doesn't hurt to ask.[[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]] -- [[User:Tom|Tom]] 23:40, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| - | :::::::Wow. Are you part of Tetazoo, Aurora? And if so, do you fit right in? — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 23:45, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| |
| - | ::::::::Nope. I live in the other dorm mentioned in the article, Random Hall. And I know all of the Random Hall people mentioned in the article, of course. I suppose I fit right in ;) As you can see from the article, we won Mystery Hunt this year, which is so awesome. (Check out the Property of Ones puzzle on [[School Sightings]]). That's a pretty good article, and I'm pleased that it focuses so heavily on East culture. They even touch on some pretty controversial stuff. It's also nice that it focuses on Hunt rather than hacking. All the MIT articles talk about is hacking, but I'm a hunter, not a hacker ;) {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} 00:21, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

| |
| - | :::::::::My eyes seem to be broken today. They're having trouble reading words that are right in front of them. (I admit I only skimmed the article.) But "Random" Hall? That seems so... I forget the technical term. Okay, I found "hack":
| |
| - | ::::::::::''The word hack at MIT usually refers to a clever, benign, and "ethical" prank or practical joke, which is both challenging for the perpetrators and amusing to the MIT community (and sometimes even the rest of the world!). Note that this has nothing to do with computer (or phone) hacking (which we call "cracking").''
| |
| - | :::::::::So you're not a hacker. Are you a cracker? (I sound like Dave Chappelle.) As for this "hunting" business, I'll say I could see how to arrive at the answer once I saw the solution spelled out, but you're telling me that somebody sat down and pieced all this together? With no hints? I'm no intellectual slouch, but I doubt I would have had the patience to figure that out. As your Jeff Barrett would put it, I "can't figure out what the f— all this s— is." (And isn't ''that'' colorful language? I don't think I would have chosen to swear right there, but that's just me. I'm also clearly rambling.) — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 01:06, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
| |
| - | ::::::::::I am neither a hacker nor a cracker. I have personally made fun of many hackers though ;) As for Mystery Hunt, you get used to it. The Strong Bad one was solved pretty quickly if I remember -- I was working on a different puzzle at the time. There are standard procedures you learn to get through puzzles (not that standard procedures work all of the time!). {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} 02:45, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I don't. Just disagreeable at times. I'm not passionate about the "male modeling" fact in a "WTF IS THIS BLASTED FACT WASTING SPACE ON THE WIKI FOR" manner like the "doyng" fact or the Family Guy non-reference; I'm just very leery about it, and was trying to get people out of the bad habit of "well, it COULD BE, so we have to include it!" --Jay (Gobble) 22:21, 14 Jul 2005 (UTC)
