When a character is expecting a response from some audience but none is forthcoming, or when a joke falls flat, typically cricket noises will be heard cutting through the silence.
The Brothers Chaps did not originate this joke, but they get a lot of use out of it.

- Fluffy Puff Commercial — Homestar is expected to say his line, but he is silent. Crickets chirp.
- The House That Gave Sucky Treats — Homestar says that Marzipan told him to eat a lot of Smarties this year, but he's not sure why. Crickets chirp.
